Gibney Beach was the perfect place for a family getaway, and the Garden Cottage was ideal for our family of 5 (kids ages 8, 5 & 3). We were slow to book the cottage because of the price, but now that we've experienced the magic of Gibney, I'm glad we did. Gibney beach offers many things, but the main thing is location. This is basically the only house in all of St. John that is truly located on the beach. Sure, there are some other resorts that are located on a few other beaches, but those beaches aren't nearly as nice as Gibney. What makes Gibney Beach special is that it's extremely well protected. During our stay, we visited several beaches (Lameshur, Cinnamon, Maho, Leinster, and Reef). While they were nice, it would get very windy and the surf was much stronger. On Gibney, however, no matter how strong the wind was blowing, the beach was always perfect, waves always calm. If price is a concern for you, consider this...absolutely everything you could possibly need is available at Gibney. With a full-sized grill and comfortable kitchen, you can easily save $100-$200 per day by cooking your own meals onsite. If you want to paddle board and kayak, there are two of each available for guests to use. If you plan to rent them elsewhere, plan to spend $30-$50 per hour on rental. And don't forget, this place is right on the beach! If you want to travel to other beaches, however, there are coolers available to use, and pretty much anything else you might need. Here's how I spent pretty much all of my five days at Gibney: Wake up at dawn, do an early morning activity (kayak, stand up paddle board, snorkel and/or hike), come in for coffee and breakfast, return to beach to read and explore with kids, head out on St. John for an excursion (water's edge walk and Reef Bay hike with NPS Rangers are fantastic!), return to cottage for supper, and end with an evening activity (see morning activities). Every morning I saw sea turtles, and late at night or early in the morning, I would splash in the water and watch the tiny sea creatures illuminate themselves with brilliant blue light (yes, the beach is bioluminescent)! There are several hiking trails close by (we went up Peace Hill and Turtle Rock). You can't access them on foot from the property, but it was fun to kayak over to them, hike, and kayak back. Want to see the famous Trunk Bay? Instead of driving over, just load your gear on a kayak and paddle over (it's the next bay east of Hawksnest). Thank you, Teri!!!

An impossibly beautiful piece of heaven...

  • 5 of 5

A memorable holiday for us in the Gibney Garden Cottage, so beautifully done. The lovely hostess Teri has made Gibney Beach the perfect match for St John, in other words, beautiful, tasteful, and unspoilt. The situation made for a stunning holiday, the cottage had everything we needed and we packed our days with exploring and were always happy to get back 'home'. Although we would have been happy not moving off the beach too (great kayaking, reef snorkelling or paddle boarding. Hawksnest Bay, and Gibney Beach in particular, is very very special.

In other words, pretty much exactly what anyone would point to as their tropical island paradise

Looking forward to visiting again one day - perhaps moored offshore even?!

Gibney Beach Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

We spent this Easter and Spring Break at the Gibney Beach Cottage. Of all the trips to the Caribbean - land and sail - we have never seen, much less enjoyed, a beach as beautiful. The water was crystal clear as far as the eye could see...we woke up every morning and enjoyed our coffee on the beach in awe of how beautiful our surroundings. Teri, our host was the perfect combination of helpful and respectful of our privacy. Our two teen age guys loved the exploring and snorkeling. Gibney is just the right distance from Cruz Bay for meals, shopping and grocery runs. Really, just can't say enough about how perfect the beach, location and host! We can't wait to return.

Perfect location to relax and enjoy St. John!

  • 5 of 5

I have visited St. John eight times and have stayed on both sides of the island. Some friends got married on this property several years ago and this is the first time it was available during our travel dates. Teri was easy to work with to get it booked and we loved it. I was traveling with my wife, son and mother-in-law and the garden cottage was perfect. Enough privacy in the house for us and a great, quiet location.

While my son and I explored parts of the island, the ladies never really left the beach. It was nice to have chairs and hammocks provided that were ours to use, no looking for a beach site each morning! Having this part of Hawksnest just to ourselves was perfect. Waves went from gentle lapping to 2' depending on the wind which made it perfect. Beach is shallow and easy to get to, just a few steps away from the house. Much of this beach also has natural shade so you can always find a shady or sunny spot.

We loved using Teri's kayaks and borrowing the paddle boards at no cost. Israel was maintaining the gardens each day and was eager to help with anything we needed. Loved being just a few minutes to Cruz Bay for food / store runs. Kitchen was well equipped and had everything we needed.

If you are looking for a quiet place to hang out on the beach and enjoy St. John, this is a great place.
