We had wind every day, so snorkeling was not possible. Judith and Carlos were great and catered to us. The sargasso grass is bad, so we had to go to the other side of the island to swim.
This is my second stay at Escape Away and I wish I could give it the 5 star review that I did the first time I was there. Judith and Carlos remain awesome, helpful and a huge asset. Carlos explaining how coconut trees grow is one of my highlights of the trip! They are not the source of my review.
The general condition of the house is what leads my review to be less stellar than it was last time. The first day we were there, my mother fell from a broken step on the palapa. She cut her toe (enough that it hurt the rest of the vacation), skinned her leg and bruised herself pretty badly. As of the time we checked out, the step (and nail sticking out of it from breaking) had not been repaired. This same step was a problem two years ago when we were there.
The house is, generally, not in the same fresh condition it was in when the pictures were taken and in worse condition than two years ago. Saltwater and humidity take a toll, so that is somewhat to be expected however mold in the air conditioner and shower are things to be addressed.
Seaweed (though out of anyone's control) makes the water at the house murky and keeps a smell in the air. This lessened our experience since we rented the house again specifically to get in the water.
There was construction planned while we stayed at the house, which we found out about upon checking in. This is something we should have been informed of before we got there so that we could arrange other accommodations if desired.
Several other reviews mention issues like towels being old and having larger cups. Jerry says he has corrected these issues. I saw no difference from when I was there 2 years ago - old, small, scratchy towels and small cups. Stairs and porch are VERY slippery with just the smallest amount of water - be careful. He assures that my issues have also been fixed. I am not sure I believe it.
I contacted Jerry about my issues and his resolution was to offer a $500 credit towards my next stay. Sadly, I will not be staying at Escape Away again - I just don't trust that I will get all of the information I need before I arrive anymore.
Thank you Debbie for your review. Your previous 5 star review was excellent so we sincerely feel awful that you did not enjoy yourself this time. We have served over 2,000 satisfied guests in over 20 years at our locations yet is still hurts to have anyone unhappy. We have immediately replaced the stair at the Palapa, purchased more new towels and we are making very significant investments in the beach house. We are building a beautiful new swimming pool with sun deck, adding additional lounge chairs and installing new luxury window treatments. Please let us know if you change your mind and want to experience the new swimming pool and sun deck.
You are welcome to call me any time.

Let me start by explaining that there is no 4.5 star choice which is what I would truly rate our experience. Our hosts, Carlos and Judy were the best. Carlos worked tirelessly to clear away the seagrass that relentlessly crept up onto the property's shores. This problem is happening up and down on the property's side of the island and we noticed the problem at Caye Caulker as well. It can't be helped at this time. This would be the only reason I rated the property 4.5 stars. Otherwise, me and my family (4 adults), had the most wonderful, extremely relaxing time. Judy is a great cook and treated us to some very delicious local fare (we love, love, love her Fry Jacks, curry dishes and the ceviche). She and Carlos were very insightful about their country giving us lots of great information. Carlos arranged to have Hill of No Worries Tours to come by, gather what interests us, explain the different tours and put together an excursion package. We chose the cave tubing, zip lining and Mayan ruins of Xunantunich package tour (very informative and lots of fun). We also booked a snorkeling tour of Hol Chan, Shark Ray Alley and Mexico Rocks, and chartered a boat for a half-day fishing trip (believe me, this was long enough for novice fishermen/women). For the tours, we were picked up and dropped off from the property for our convenience. Later, we enjoyed fishing from the palapa where Carlos supplied the bait and even prepared what we caught to add to our menu for the evening...thanks Carlos!!
Renting the golf cart on the property was great and Carlos even offered to get extra fuel for us from town providing even more of a convenience for us. Carlos also arranged for Evelyn to come to the house for the included massage which was much needed. I had it done on the palapa...what an experience!!
I found that our experience from booking this property to our last day there was very good. My family and I left with wonderful memories of our trip. Thank you Mr. Kirsch for working with us when my family arrived on two different days.
Carlos and Judy, you were both so very helpful and we very much enjoyed your company. We also loved the time spent playing the card game Phase10 with you...thank you so very much for the memories.
The Wells family
Thank you so much Brenda for taking time to write your 4.5 star review! We are so glad that you enjoyed our delicious cuisine, the private dock and the relaxing palapa! We have added more staff to keep the beach clean during the odd times that seaweed gets on the beach. We take great pride in having the World's Biggest Living Coral Reef ( the Bealize Reef) with amazing fish and bright corals right in front of our house! We sincerely enjoy helping great families build incredible memories together... Please let me know when we can help you again! Cheers, Jerry, Carlos and Chef Judith
We had a great trip at Escape Away. Carlos and Judy were great, my kids will miss them the most! We've stayed at many all inclusive resorts and always walk away feeling like we didn't get to experience as much of the culture as we would like. This trip was different! We were a good 30-40 minute golf cart ride away from town (San Pedro). We went in town a couple days at our own leisure and felt more like we experienced the culture, but also spent time just around the house, which felt more like an all inclusive. We rotated going to Secret Beach, the hotel next door's pool (which is 5 min golf cart ride away), and our own palapa. We like different scenery so changing it up every day was fun. It also felt like a new adventure everyday! The water at the house is shallow, so its good for kids. We kayaked, snorkeled, went to the chicken drop, and explored San Pedro. Judy will make you true Belizean food and both her and Carlos will you help you navigate the city and tell you different places you can go. If you are going to rent a golf (and you should!), I'd recommend brining a bandana or something to cover your face. The roads are very dusty. We had a great time!
Thank you so much Kristen - we truly enjoyed helping you create your dream vacation! We are very proud of the best and biggest living reef in the world right in front of the Escape Away Beach House with clear warm Caribbean waters. We love that you found the cuisine and our truly relaxing beach house more memorable than a resort. The convenient and fun onsite golf cart is excellent for you to go where you want when you want. Thank you for posting pictures of the house and the beach on Facebook . We are glad that you enjoyed family swimming time - we ensure that the beach is cleaned every day for wonderful family swimming. Chef Judith prepares delicious meals for you when you want. Thank you for your excellent recommendation to your friends and family. Please let us know when we can help you again. Cheers, Jerry - Owner, Carlos - Manager and Judith - Chef.
Our Great Escape Away
Escape Away was exactly that - an escape from time and obligation. The Escape Away "Casa Blanca" house was more that a VRBO. The accommodations fit us just fine and since there were only two couples we each had our own room, and BR with water views. We loved being right on the water and the warm sea breezes kept us relieved from the heat and free of any bugs.
Manager Carlos and Chef Judith were always handy with any help we needed, fish and guide ideas, local and historical information, and of course three beautiful meals a day. Judith was a great cook and planned the meals with us, giving us a choice of what we would like. The free massage was the best I have ever had!
We rented a four person golf cart for the entire time and it was easy to drive and great to get around the area and in to town. About half the way to town is paved and the rest is well-driven dirt road which requires a bit of maneuvering around bumps, but still fun! We explored Secret Beach, Marco Gonzalez Archaeological Site on the southern tip of Ambergris Caye, all around San Pedro (There's a lovely market selling locally made handcrafts) and all the way up north to Rocky Point through the jungle where there are no roads, people or civilization; to snorkel and fish in the bathwater-warm sea and coral between the Belize Barrier Reef and the sandy shoreline.
If you like to be a bit off the beaten track and away from the crowds of tourists this is perfect. You will not find big hotel chains or Lyft and Ubers here, just a lot of local bars and restaurants and a few resorts between your stay and town. Lots of local flavor!
Carlos set us up with a visit from Hill at No Worries Tours. We signed up for an all-day snorkeling and exploring excursion to Hol Chan Marine Reserve, Shark Ray Alley, Caye Caulker for a few hours, Tarpon viewing, some seahorses and visiting Mexico Rocks! What a great day that was and they picked us up on our dock!
A recent bloom of Sargassum Seaweed has been drifting up on the beach - a sad sight but Carlos did due diligence to keep our beach as clear as possible. It is a threat throughout the Caribbean and experts said there could be a number of causes for these blooms, including more nutrients on the ocean surface, global warming, or atmospheric dust from Africa. It did not take away from our trip only it was difficult to see Carlos working so hard to keep our beach clear.
Jerry Kirsch, owner of Escape Away was amazing, flexible and generous!
Thank you so much Jill - you inspire us to create a beautiful oasis and provide excellent service!
We are very proud of the best and biggest living reef in the world right in front of the
Escape Away Beach House with clear warm Caribbean waters.
We love that you found the professional massage from the wonderful Coral Day Spa staff the best ever! We call them in for the service and they bring their massage table and music for you. It is free with each reservation.
The convenient and fun onsite golf cart is excellent for you to go where you want when you want.
Thank you for posting pictures of the beach on Facebook - insure that the beach is cleaned every day for wonderful family swimming.. Chef Judith has delicious lunch ready for you when you want.
We sincerely enjoy helping you create your dream Caribbean vacation. Thank you for your excellent recommendation to your friends and family.

Great memories made!!
We had a fantastic 2 family vacation at Escape Away and would not hesitate to recommend this rental. We read previous reviews ahead of time, so were very familiar and comfortable with what to expect. As previous people had said, this is not fancy and perhaps could use some TLC, but our stay was great. Carlos and Judy were awesome and so kind. They went out of their way to accommodate our requests. Judy made tortillas for us a few nights in, which was probably a mistake on her part, because then we wanted them daily, LOL- SO GOOD! She made her shrimp curry, filled fry jacks and some amazing fish tacos. She also made conch ceviche for us, from the conch we harvested ourselves, and her daily breakfasts were great.
Some previous reviewers had made comments about a few different things, but I think if you are considering renting this home with the expectation of getting a 5 star resort, yes you probably will be disappointed. However, if you come in expecting to stay in a place with welcoming and hospitable hosts, to make lasting memories in a beautiful country, with beautiful sunrises, great snorkeling and good food you will be COMPLETELY satisfied. We enjoyed coffee and the sunrise every morning on the palapa , Carlos caught bait and helped the kids fish, cleaned the conch we caught, picked coconut for us, taught us some fun games and showed us a great snorkeling area and so many other things. We took the kayaks out 3 times and had great snorkeling right out in front of the house, spotting some unique fish we didn't even see on our snorkeling excursion along with rays, dolphins and even sharks. The sea grass is overwhelming and it is impossible to keep up with, but this was all over the island (except Secret Beach). I went for a run when we stayed in San Pedro for one night and ran in front of numerous 5 star resorts where the sea grass was much worse and was gagging due to the smell. This is just something that is out of their control. Carlos did clean it up while we were there, but it was right back the next morning. We also enjoyed going to the 2 resorts close by for swimming, appetizers and drinks a couple nights.
Great memories were made by all!!
Thank you Ronda for your awesome 5 star review! Thank you for recommending the Escape Away Beach House to your friends and family! We sincerely love helping you create your tropical dream vacation! I love Chef Judith's fresh tortillas too, LOL- SO GOOD! And her shrimp curry, filled fry jacks and some amazing fish tacos. I also love Chef Judith's conch ceviche and her daily breakfasts are incredible. We have just completed an excellent new sea weed stopping boom that we are very proud of to ensure that our beach is clean and clear every day. We are blessed to have helped you to be completely satisfied.
