The cottage was absolutely lovely. It was in a good location to reach lots of attractions and was very peaceful. I really enjoyed my stay.
A fantastic bolt hole in a beautiful Kentish village.
We had a fantastic few days at the lovely Forge Cottage, in the delightful village of Charing.
You couldn’t wish for a more cozy and charming place to escape modern life.
The cottage was well presented, well equipped, and easily catered for the needs of our family (2 adults & 2 young children).
The village of Charing is an undiscovered Kentish gem, with a well stocked village shop and even a micro brewery and pub! Rare to find rural peace with such good access to London or, for those going the other way, to the continent. Such was the old world charm of the village, there was a film crew present during our stay filming a period drama.
In our view, Forge Cottage and Charing were both the stars!
Thank you for your review, and yes, the charm of the village and it's tranquil pace rubs off when you're there. Also close to local historic places or towns to fill the day with at your leisure. Kent holds many beautiful locations in The garden of England, hence it being sort for filming TV period dramas...
We look forward to welcoming you back anytime. Regards Sue
A beautiful and well located cosy retreat!
Forge Cottage is a beautiful and well appointed place to stay with all the home comforts you need. Sue is a great host and makes finding the place and checking in really easy and left some essentials in the kitchen and logs for the fire to make you feel welcome. The cottage is in the centre of the beautiful village of Charing with an amazing butchers and tea shop and a great general store, post office and hairdressers! Easy access to the Pilgrims Way and North Downs Way and well positioned for the towns of Canterbury, Ashford or Maidstone.
The cottage has a lovely compact modern kitchen and nice cosy lounge with a wood burning stove. A great comfortable bed and lots of hot water for a bath or use the electric shower. Parking outside for one car.
Forge Cottage is simply a great home in a great location. I loved it!!
I am so pleased that you found the cottage well equipped and with supplies to make yourself at home right away and during your stay. It's situated in a lovely village with a real sense of community, but also in reach of so many other great places to visit. We look forward to welcoming you again soon. Regards Sue
I booked and paid for this property for a month and had a provisional reservation for another 2 months as I was coming to work in the area. Sadly when I arrived there were snail or slug trails all over the lounge floor, quite a lot of cobwebs and spiders and what appeared to be damp inside some of the kitchen cupboards. I raised my concerns with the owner Sue (who turned out not to be the owner but someone who managed the property). I was told that due to the age of the house "insects" find their way in and that the property had been cleaned so the cobwebs had probably appeared overnight. Sue did offer to come over to the inspect the property, but as my asthma started to cause me problems I decided I couldn't stay so moved out after two days. After looking at the property themselves, the owners concluded that there was nothing wrong with the accommodation and gave me 24 hours to agree to a refund that meant I'd be paying for 10 days rent, plus the booking and cleaning fees, otherwise I'd have to pay for 2 weeks rent. I had little choice but to agree, so ended up paying quite a substantial amount of money for the experience. I had agreed a 2 week notice period but that was on the basis that the property was as advertised which in my opinion it wasn't.
The cottages I manage are always cleaned to a very high standard and pre-entry checks carried out for all our guests.
All issues raised by our guests are dealt with promptly to minimise any inconvenience to them.
The cottage was fully cleaned and a welcome pack left for the original arrival day, as I do as an extra for all our guests to help them settle in.
The cottage is C1800 and is a fine example of an old Forge house in a beautiful rural area with many original features keeping much of the history within this lovely cosy property alive.
Cosy and well laid out
Lovely cottage, thank you Sue.
I am pleased you enjoyed the cottage and had everything you needed for your stay. I look forward to welcoming you back anytime soon. Regards Sue
Stairs without handrails
Very cute cottage, ideally situated in lovely village.
Somewhat musty. Prior warning about lack of handrails on stairs would certainly have lad to a rethink on this property for an elderly couple.
Sorry to hear this cottage wasn't for you.
Forge Cottage is ideally situated for trips all over Kent from its rural location in the village of Charing. Cute, cosy and circa 1800, it has many of its original features, beams, open fires and an open, curved staircase..
The village stands on the ancient road called the Pilgrims' way, near the source of the Len.
It is an ancient place, known at "Domesday" as Cheringes. The earliest market being held here is recorded in the year 1285.
As with many Kent villages Charing boasts a choice of great walks from beginners to hardened walkers of all levels. Nestled at the edge of the Kent Downs an area of outstanding natural beauty, AONB, it's the perfect area to explore.
Besides walking there are many attractions for adults & children to enjoy such as Port Lympne Reserve, where all kinds of primates are bred through their conservation program and returned successfully back in the wild. Take their Safari trail to meet them all, including Lemurs, Ocelots , Red Panda, Giraffes and much more.
Canterbury Cathedral, home of the Church of England and city center, so much to do for everyone. The Park & Ride will save time and effort trying to park if travelling by car.
Maidstone for the Museum, Carriage Museum, Kent Life Heritage Museum, lots of activities in Lockmeadow Leisure complex and restaurants to choose from.
Ashford International Train station is only 15 mins by train from Charing and then on to London for A night on the Town.
