Jerry & Jo Shaffer. We met 25 years ago in Grand Haven Michigan. Our love of the out doors and traveling brought us to Manistee 15 years ago. It was quite a change from the hustle and bustle we were used to.
Jerry & Johanna Shaffer purchased this lodge in 1995
When we saw the Lodge overlooking the pond, we knew we had to have it. We've had many family reunion's here ourselves. Memories we will never forget. We try to keep our prices reasonable so other families can experience the same thing.
The Lodge offers family bonding. It is also great for fishing, golfing, car and motorcycle groups. Before we moved up here, Jerry and I used to come by ourselves, which is also very relaxing and enjoyable for couples. Mornings are so serene, and most of the time you'll catch deer or wild turkey hanging out by the pond. Just down the road is a campground on the river where you can launch your boat for a small fee. They also have a small store for necessities.
A very relaxing & enjoyable experience. My husband fished pretty much everyday as I enjoyed the shopping/beach & casino. We had cookouts every evening with either a fire to follow or a friendly game of pool (sometimes both). There was something to do for all of us (4). The lodge has a lot of room to stretch out. There was plenty of household items you need for cooking & enjoying a meal together. The cabin was clean & well taken care of. We got the opportunity to meet the caretakers that were very informative with directions & places to go. The thing that really stood out to all of us was the writing on the beams of all the years of returning guests & how much they enjoyed themselves. Thank you for allowing all of us enjoy our family & friend's at your lodge. We are all looking forward to next year.
We enjoyed this place so much. It was a large family getaway, and this cabin accommodated the 12 of us just fine. This is a typical michigan cabin from the mid century,if I were to guess, but it was clean and very well cared for. The pictures actually make it look smaller than it is,and we were never concerned that we would feel cooped up if the weather turned bad. Lots of room for everyone and it was a nice touch that the porch with pool table was separate from the living room with sliding glass doors. After the kids went to bed we were able to stay up and not wake them. Great fishing in the pond, and the row boat was perfect for the kids to take out on there own. We were there for 3 days and never left. Kids ages ranged from 3 to 15 and never once were they bored. The hike to the river was pleasant and short, and the area itself was simply beautiful. This is quiet secluded, but a campground party store about a quarter of a mile away provided us with ice, paper towels, eggs and a couple other small things, saving us a trip to town. We can't wait to come back.
I've stayed at Crystal Ponds Lodge twice now and would go back again. The cabin is nice and clean with a well equipped kitchen, and the owners are very responsive and helpful. The setting is great if you want a secluded and quiet location inside the Manistee National Forest. There are short trails around the property that take you around the pond, which is so clear you can see snapping turtles hanging out on the bottom, and through the woods to a cliff overlooking the Manistee River. I like that I can have the seclusion if desired, or a 20-40 minute drive can get me into Manistee, or various other locations on the Michigan coast for hiking, beaching, etc. My dog also loves it here.
In short - beautiful setting and well-cared for accommodations.
Manistee is a charming Victorian city. Visit the museum on beautiful river street featuring the lumber days era during the late 1800's. Enjoy the fourth of July celebration, and many summer festivals. Shop river street downtown Manistee. There is a fitness center in town for your enjoyment. Try your luck at Little River Casino. Hang out at one of the three beaches: Douglas park on Lake Michigan, Fifth Avenue beach on Lake Michigan, and Man Made Lake. Enjoy one of the local golf ranges. All just 15 minutes away. Take a scenic drive up M-22 to Onekama, Frankfort and Empire. Hike or bike the national forest just outside the lodge door.
