This charming, comfortable cottage is perfect for your active family vacation, girlfriends' getaway or romantic retreat. We invite you to leave your busy lives behind and bask in this private, comfortable and convenient oasis on one of Vermont's best kept vacation secrets, the enchanting Lake Hortonia.
On the first floor you'll find a fully equipped kitchen, living room, dining room, 1 bedroom with two sets of twin-size bunk beds, and a bath with shower, washer and dryer. The second story has a bedroom with queen size bed, and an open sleeping area with a fold-out futon sofa-bed. The house has a woodburning stove, screened-in dining porch, gas BBQ grill, large new deck, parking for several cars, WiFi, and lake views from all rooms. Kayaks, a canoe, and a rowboat come with the rental for exploring the lake, or you can rent a paddle boat or pontoon from the country store just down the road. If you fish, you're in good company, as Lake Hortonia is widely known as one of the best fishing lakes in the state!
The cottage is ideally located, making day trips easy, whether you like to hike, bike, shop, visit museums or cultural centers, or simply explore the many back roads and charming villages Vermont is famous for.
The cottage's owners, Bill and Carol Campbell, are a retired minister and teacher who spend three seasons at their home in Glens Falls, New York and their summers at the cottage next door to the rental, called "Cheerio." Their children, Cathy, Beth, and Don, spend as much time at the lake as possible, and Cathy and her family own the white cottage on the other side of the rental, called "Stillwater."
Donald Campbell (son of owner) purchased this cottage in 2014
Lake Hortonia has been home to our family for five generations, beginning with the purchase and construction of the property next to the rental (the little green cabin) in the 1920s by our great grandfather, Charles Morris. "Cheerio" is now owned by his grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Bill and Carol Campbell. The white cottage on the other side of the rental was purchased in 1999 by Charles' great-granddaughter and her husband as their own summer getaway. Our family's dream has long been to own the property in between, and in 2014, this became a reality. We are excited to be able to share this new cottage with renters, and hope you will come to love Lake Hortonia as much as we do.
One of the best things about Lake Hortonia is that is conveniently located, yet off the beaten path. It's a peaceful but fun-filled lake, at times busy with tubing and waterskiing, at other times very still and quiet.
The property as stated in the overview was clean and updated. We love this lake as its not busy as other nearby lakes. It was great that the house came with 3 boats! Fishing and swimming was great. Lake is not as weedy as it had been many years ago so that was a real plus.
The owners were most helpful and attentive to our needs. We will definitely return!
Thank you for letting us enjoy your home!
We just spent two amazing weeks at this cottage...8 of us...2 grandparents, 4 children 8 and under and their parents. It was perfect for us...children in the bunk room, parents and infant in upstairs bedroom, grandparents on the very comfortable futon in the expanded hall way upstairs. The previous reviewer's reference to the drive and the upstairs bathroom were noted in the advertisement, so anyone renting knows in advance of this situation. Yes, the drive is steep, but not a problem walking down from the upper parking to the house.Stay off the gravel and walk on the grass for greater ease. The house is amazingly outfitted, from an ample supply of towels and sheets, to a fully equipped kitchen with coffeemaker, blender, and everything needed for preparing and serving meals. The view of the lake from the house (living room and screened in porch) is amazing. Access to kayaks and canoe is just steps away. There is a platform near the dock with comfortable chairs, an outside deck with a table and chairs and a screened in porch with sofa and chairs and table. There is room on a large flat area outside to pitch a tent which we did for our teen daughters and granddaughter. The best part of the whole place was its access to the lake..swimming, kayaking. It was all relaxing and beautiful. It is close to many different activities and good eating. We completely recommend this property. The owner lives on one side and her daughter's family on the other. They are very helpful. I overheard our 8 year old grandson ask his mom, "Can we come back next year?" We will definitely be back.
The cottage had a very large living room, kitchen and screened in porch. The cottage is located right on Lake Hortonia, very pretty. The downside was the very steep driveway which was difficult to get to the road. The other negative was there was only one bathroom, a second full bath on the upper level is highly recommended. The raised living room also made it difficult for seniors.
The location was close to many attractions. Overall a very nice cottage but not ideal for seniors and anyone without a four wheel drive vehicle.

The property is in a lovely location on a wooded hillside, gradually leading down to the water's edge. There is a gravel parking area at the top, as you turn off Jennings Lane. The cottage is accessible either by walking down the unpaved driveway on the hill, or by driving down and parking closer to the entrance.
