About Mary Lowengard

New Yorker, writer and editor, Buck Hill lover!

Mary Lowengard purchased this house in 2013

Why Mary Lowengard chose Poconos

Spacious but manageable, great for small family and friends, not a cavernous party house. It's quiet yet close to everything. Everyone is friendly and helpful. There's nothing NOT to recommend it.

What makes this house unique

Proximity and ease of travel to and from Buck Hill are a huge plus; recreation right out the door; being able to walk to town for lunch, a quart of milk or a chocolate-covered pretzel at Callie's. The hiking is great -- but so is just walking around Buck Hill looking at houses. It's truly an old world getaway.

"The Four Seasons" is great in any season!

  • 5 of 5

I have stayed twice at Cottage 40, now known known as “The Four Seasons.” It felt like home the moment I walked in. The cottage (as all Buck Hill abodes are called) successfully blends the charm of a 1950’s vacation home in the Poconos with both period and modern decor and amenities. The combination living room/dining room is a welcoming, comfortable space featuring a large couch perfect for gathering friends and family in front of the fireplace or for a spirited game of Scrabble. The recent addition of a baby grand player piano adds charm and a fun, easy way to entertain. The rooms are comfortable and quiet. The deck has wonderful views and great birdwatching; I scored my first juvenile yellow-bellied sapsucker while relaxing on the deck. The walk to the nearby falls is beautiful; you can walk right up to the waterfall and circle around above it. We both made full use of the well-equipped kitchen, and ate out at nearby restaurants. I highly recommend a morning walk into Mountainhome for a trip to the Daily Bread bakery, and a visit to Callie's Candy Kitchen, the local chocolate factory is a must! Having stayed now two seasons - summer and fall - I highly look forward to completing my Four Seasons experience with visits in the winter and spring.

Fantastic Stay in Buck Hills Falls

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I just spent a weekend in Buck Hill Falls, in an amazing house with an amazing community just two hours from New York City that combines the amenities of a luxury resort (golf, tennis, horseback riding, rustic roads, antiquing, fine dining) with the privacy and peace of a country manor. The cottage is a delightfully well-equipped abode, with a great kitchen and beautiful deck, gardens, waterfall pond and plenty of private corners. We enjoyed walking to the Falls and along other well-cleared trails as well on the paved roads, catching glimpses of the views cottagers enjoy from their variously situated homes. We highly recommend a stay in Buck Hill Falls!

Cottage 40: Great location, great house

  • 5 of 5

I have stayed at Cottage 40 several times over the past year, watching its transformation. It is the perfect house in any season to recharge your tired mind. In the winter, it's a great place to curl up in front of the fireplace, watch the snowflakes and put on a big pot of soup. (Skiing is optional.) In fair weather, it's nice to explore the hiking trails, walk to the falls, or just listen to the birds and waterfall in the backyard.

The house is very comfortable and well furnished, and the kitchen is a cook's delight. The rooms are spacious without feeling cavernous, and tastefully furnished. There is a well-stocked library too. The setting is private, with lovely flowers in the front and a gorgeous view from the back. Buck Hill Falls is a uniquely friendly community, with plenty of things to do and places to eat. If you go, try the peasant bread from the bakery. It's delicious!
