There is a kitchen with gas stove, toaster oven and microwave. Pam is a retired commercial real estate broker and husband, Lance, is a retired Herff Jones executive. Having met at the University of Florida (Go Gators!), they always wanted to move back to the Gainesville area. They bought the property from good friends and next door neighbors in 2007 and built the Main Lodge as a full time dream residence in 2011. They have enjoyed entertaining friends and family and decided to open the Lazy Turtle Lodge to guests who appreciate the simplicity and beauty of Mother Nature.
Pam Smith purchased this recreational vehicle in 2007
Pam and Lance had been coming to the Santa Fe to visit friends, now neighbors, since 1997 and fell in love with the natural beauty and serenity of the area. When the property became available, they decided to make it their future home. The property already had three trailers and an RV (now named Turtle Heaven, Turtle Club, Turtle Nest and Turtle Palace) which Pam and Lance began turning into sleep accommodations for their 6 kids. In 2011 they build the Lodge and moved it full time.
The beauty and serenity of the area provide a unique setting for both relaxation and river fun. In all seasons the river flows amidst cypress and oak hammocks and can be enjoyed in so many ways. Whether floating, tubing, kayaking, canoeing, cave diving, paddle boarding, fishing or simply sitting on the dock and watching the is slow and easy at the Lazy Turtle Lodge.
I recently spent 2 nights in the Turtle Palace and it was amazing. Pam and Lance were extremely helpful and accommodating. The Santa Fe River is beautiful and staying on this property is well worth it. Do yourself a favor and hit the water. One of the best kayaking adventures I've had to date. If you're thinking maybe I should rent this... totally do it, treat yourself! I can't wait to return.
The Turtle Palace met our expectations for a quiet and relaxed getaway. We were greeted warmly at the Lodge by the owners Pam and Lance. The Palace was well equipped and the bed was very comfortable. Our hosts thought of everything with wraps supplied for the walk to the outside shower and helpful labels placed throughout the camper. We used the Palace as our base camp for 4 days of touring Florida's State Parks and small towns. High Springs is just a few miles away and offered may options for breakfast and dinner. We were greeted each morning by deer along the roadway out. The best place to destress and disconnect for a few days.
Kayaking (all set up by local shops or bring your own) was awesome as well as free diving/snorkeling in adjoining springs. 72 degree year round water temp !! Sunsets /sunrises on the dock are magnificent!! Pam and Lance are way cool and easy to work with-we will return!! Soon.
We stayed two days (April 14-16) and were very busy elsewhere all day each day and into the evening, so we didn't have any time to enjoy the location. The retired trailer on blocks with a large, surrounding wood deck with outdoor furniture and picnic table was spacious, clean and comfortable. A nearby fire pit and an abundance of outdoor chairs make it an attractive gathering place for a cook out. At the urging of our hosts we tried the outdoor shower and it was very good. They live on the site in a large, attractive, elevated (the river must have impressive flood stages) Lodge and were very friendly, welcoming and helpful. The Lodge grounds fronting the river are available for canoe/kayak launch and relaxing. The rental description didn't clearly mention that the trailer was a short walk (several hundred feet) along the driveway from the river but this was no problem. Good place; we would return.
I recently stayed at the Turtle Palace for the second time. As expected, the visit, the facilities, and the host's services were outstanding. Each visit to the Santa Fe area has been fantastic and the Turtle Palace has been a great base of operations. I fully intend to make future visits to the area and the Turtle Palace. Thank you Pam and Lance for providing such wonderful facilities.
We just returned home from a great 4 days of kayaking, resting, and thoroughly enjoying the "great life" at The Turtle Palace. We kayaked from the 441 bridge to River Rise and back downstream to Hwy 27 bridge. The 2nd day was spent boating the Ichetucknee River, where we saw manatees, to the Santa Fe and the Hwy 129 bridge. After this awesome trip we relaxed on the dock following a nice hot outdoors shower (in February no less). The 3rd day, we kayaked from Hwy 27 bridge to Rum Island Park and stopped en route at Poe Springs Park and Lily Springs. That afternoon, we hiked to the sink at O'Leno State Park. Thursday morning we hiked at River Rise Park to the Rise. Jim already plans to revisit in two weeks. Pam and Lance do a tremendous job in making your trip a remarkable journey.
Turtle Palace is located 15 minutes from Historic High Springs' antique and craft stores and 40 minutes from the University of Florida in Gainesville on a private 10 acre estate - the Lazy Turtle Lodge. The Lazy Turtle Lodge is directly on the Santa Fe River where guests can float, tube, kayak, canoe, swim, fish, bird watch or watch the river flow by among cypress, oak hammocks and spanish moss. Wildlife includes lots of turtles, birds, otters, deer, and wild turkeys. A stress free beautiful natural setting.
