Overview

About the property

1 BR w/bathroom and steam plus another bathroom and gym, views and walk to beach

This guest house sits on its own property. It's very private with a high hedge separating it from neighbors. The living/dining room has three sets of French doors with electrical roll up darkening screens. There's a large covered patio with outdoor dining and an outdoor table comfortably seating 4 people as well as a teak bench and another small bistro table with granite top of 2 teak chairs..

The kitchen features Hawaiian koa wood cabinets, granite counter tops, and top of the line appliances (Sub-Zero fridge/freezer and Dacor stove with gas burners/convection oven). It's fully equipped for any chef's needs and has a pantry with stables, condiments, coffee, and teas. For coffee drinkers you will find a Nespresso Vertuoline coffee and espresso maker with frother and a stock of various pods. There's a ceiling fan in the kitchen with remote control just in case a guest would prefer to have a natural breeze instead of the air conditioning.

The dining area has a granite top table with four modern designer chairs, a floating buffet made from Hawaiian koa wood with an antique French walnut framed mirror on the wall. There are tablecloths, placemats and napkins, both linen and cotton ones, in the buffet.

Between the living and dining areas is a custom made cabinet with black granite

top which sits beneath a large 4s Ultra Smart flat screen.

In the living area is an A. Rudin custom made three cushioned couch with a pull out queen bed. The end tables are custom made and have an antique Flow Blue drain board embedded in the top of each table. The coffee table has a lucite base with a Blue Louise granite top. It sits on a Jack Lenor Larson custom area rug. Leather covers the arms and seats of the two French carved wood chairs which have Jim Thompson designer fabric covering the fronts and backs of the chairs in a jungle print. Two original oils painted by Magin, a French modern painter, are hung on a living room wall. One of his water colors is in the bedroom just under another large flat screen.

The bedroom has designer fabric on the headboard with luxurious bedding including down duvets, 1000 ct. sheets, down pillows and cotton blankets. There's a flat screen mounted in a corner on a wall. An antique three drawer chest of drawers is on the wall opposite the bed and a wonderfully functional wooden luggage rack next to the chest. Over the chest of drawers is a vintage, gilded framed mirror. The clothes closet has two mirrored sliding glass doors. There's another ceiling fan in the bedroom.

The bathroom has a large walk in shower with a steam unit and a beautiful custom made, one of a kind glass sink. The bathroom floor and shower walls are covered in stone.

The entire bedroom, kitchen, dining, living and bedroom areas have hickory wood flooring with area rugs in the bedroom, kitchen and living room.

The house has a Bose docking station with speakers for ipods, ipads and iphones as well as other androids. Just outside the back door off the kitchen is a Weber gas grill.

A crib and high chair are available for an infant.

Right next to the guest house is a fully equipped gym. It has 2 Precor elliptical machines, a bench and complete set of free weights, spinning bike, high end Total Gym, half and full balls, yoga mats and blocks, and a huge flat screen TV (HD satellite). There are also 2 large mirrors in the free weight area. At the back of the gym is a small kitchenette with granite counter tops and a combination washer/dryer. The bathroom in the gym has a large, walk in shower with a custom sink similar to the one in the guest house and the floor and shower walls are covered in stone.

For watching the large flat screen TV there are two oversized, custom made leather chairs and ottoman. The gym is home to some very original art work which includes two antique Chinese, large wood paneled window shutters purchased in Thailand , an abstract metal illusional painted piece, a modern Dutch still life and three photographs taken at the same time of day, but on different days, of the same location outside of Yellowstone National Park.

Wifi is available in the guest house and the gym. There is a fax, printer, copier available should a guest need it. Both the guest house and the gym have a hard line phone. The lights on the back and front of the guest house and gym are on motion sensitive sensors. There is plenty of parking off the street in front of the house. Outdoor gas heaters are available should a guest like to have them set up.

At night with the French doors or windows open one can hear the ocean which seems like it's just outside the house. The house and gym are heated as well as air conditioned. However, in summer it's almost always very comfortable with the windows open as there is a wonderful ocean breeze.

About S Gay Hugo-Martinez

My husband and I are retired professionals. We have houses in Del Mar, California,

Deer Valley, Utah, and Paris, France. We travel several months of the year. During the late 60s I lived in Paris and have always wanted to have a house there, so we bought an apartment in Paris and in 2013 listed it with VRBO. The vacation rental experience has been interesting and enjoyable. I personally handle all the bookings.

Recently we realized that we weren't using our guest house as much as we did in the past - we have guests staying there maybe one week out of the year. We decided that it was crazy to let this beautiful home sit empty. Having had such a good experience with our VRBO guests in Paris we thought we'd try listing this house as well.

S Gay Hugo-Martinez purchased this house in 2000

Why S Gay Hugo-Martinez chose Del Mar

Originally we bought this property because it was a duplex rental which was occupied by very noisey college students. It was difficult for us to enjoy summer with windows open because the noise from the duplex traveled right to our house. We'd had enough and decided to buy the property to eliminate the noise and have some quiet.

At first my husband had his office in the front part of the duplex. Then we did some remodeling and raised the roof, knocked out some walls in the back half of the duplex and made room for a gym for us. Subsequently we did a little more remodeling and added upscale bathrooms to both the front and back parts of the duplex. We continued with the remodeling and designed and installed a new kitchen in the guest house, added hardwood floors, air conditioning, French doors, electric roll up screens, and custom furnishings. Before our married daughter who lived in New York had children when she and her husband came to visit us, they stayed in this guest house. After they had children this guest house no longer worked for them. They stayed elsewhere. That was the start of us not using the guest house as often as we had in the past. Here we are today ready to share with others this fully equipped little gem just a short walk away from one of the best beaches in Southern California, the Del Mar race track and many restaurants and shops in our quaint, affluent village.

What makes this house unique

The location of the guest house is ideal. It's in a residential area that's quiet, but yet it's close enough to walk to the village of Del Mar with it's shops, plaza, and restaurants as well as the beach. We've always walked to the beach and have a wonderful "beach buggy" that hauls all of our beach chairs, boogie boards, umbrellas, beach towels, toys and coolers to the beach. This great buggy along with boogie boards and beach chairs will be available to our guests. Beach towels will be in the guest house.

Because I've rented houses in various parts of Europe and have had to purchase all our staples, coffee, tea, spices, herbs, flour, sugar, etc. I decided that it was more convenient to have a stocked pantry for guests and to request that if they used up something in the pantry to please restock it for the next guest.

I know that sometimes guests arrive late at night. I'm willing to do some grocery shopping for guests with them reimbursing me for that expense. Upon the guests arrival, there will be flowers on the dining table and a welcoming snack.

I will have a booklet in the guest house which will give the guests instructions on how to operate all of the equipment in the guest house and the gym as well as give the address and phone number of local restaurants, point them in the right direction for supermarkets, organic markets and the farmers' market in Del Mar. It will also list emergency information, the closest hospital, pharmacy, and just in case the Del Mar fire department.

A little bit of paradise.

  • 5 of 5

In August, my husband and I rented this little bit of paradise. The guest house was all that is described in the overview, clean and beautifully appointed. A short walk down the hill takes you into village and at the beach. We did not use the gym, if you are inclined, it is professionally equipped and maintained.

The amount of care that Gay and Albert put into the guest house is equal to the care given by them to insure your stay. This truly a little gem in Del Mar. We hope to return in the future.
