Great boat access and huge deck

  • 5 of 5

this place was a great house for a guys fishing trip. the house was clean, accommodating and a great location. the floating dock in the canal was ideal for our boat and the rear deck is huge and a great place to relax at the end of the day. all the bedrooms had a comfortable mattress and were roomy. this is a classic beach house, not luxurious but fairly updated and comfortable. the owner was very responsive and made the stay hassle-free.

Exactly what we wanted and needed!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here over the Thanksgiving Holiday. We brought our kayaks, bikes and games with the family. The house was perfect. We were right on the water and were able to go out every morning and evening. We were a short walk to the beach and little general store. There are grocery stores in town we ran to for the few thanksgiving items we forgot. The front porch and back porch were beautiful to enjoy the sunrise/sunset with coffee and good company. The area is not touristy, but perfect for families who want to relax by the ocean.

The owners were attentive to any questions we had, responded quickly and did everything they could to make sure our stay was perfect.

I would definitely rent this place again, I can't wait to during the summer so my kids and I can spend days on the beach without having to worry about parking or hauling things long distances!

Great house and location. Owner was terrific

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed 2 nights this past weekend for the NC Festival by the Sea. House was very clean and in a good location. Walked to the pier both mornings for coffee and breakfast which was wonderful and very affordable. The owner called us upon arrival to ensure everything was to our satisfaction and followed up upon our departure. Great owner to rent from. The property is right on a canal which would be great if you had a boat and wanted easy access to the ICW. Holden is a great beach town that is very family oriented and low key.

Wonderful vacation!

  • 5 of 5

I will admit that about 2 weeks before our trip I saw a few bad reviews on here and I got a little nervous. When we arrived I checked everything out that I read was broken or not working. I found that everything was in working order. I saw where some recent home repairs had been done so it appears that Tony took all issues and repaired them. He was very accessible whenever I had a question about anything and ensured that my family and I had a spectacular trip. We were close to the beach so we walked there several days of our stay and we went fishing off the boat dock. My only regret for the week was not bringing a kayak! We brought a little gate for the back porch and my fiancé, parents and myself were able to just sit out back with the dogs and relax. We truly enjoyed our stay and are hoping to return again next year.

Was okay

  • 3 of 5

House wasn't as expected but the owner tried to make improvements. Definitely needs newer furniture and microwave. Loveseat was broken and a replacement was brought in by the cleaning lady. For a house that is supposed to accommodate 8 people, two wicker pieces of furniture just doesn't cut it. Beds were ok but dated and noisy.

Hardly any dishes to use which made it difficult as we had to go buy disposable plates and bowls to keep from having to constantly wash. Outside railing was temporarily reinforced after we notified the owner. We are appreciative for him trying to help but would never stay here again. It just wasn't a good experience.

Not what we expected

  • 1 of 5

When we first arrived on the property and noticed some inconsistencies with the description on the home away website we contacted the manager and he said that he was aware of all the problems and they shouldn't get in the way of our stay. However, it seemed that every day we found something new wrong with the home. From broken lights, to leaking showers, to a burner missing on the stove. Needless to say, I spent most of the vacation taking pictures of what was wrong with the house, instead of enjoying the beach, the pier and relaxation. When we contacted the manager again he FINALLY agreed to send the repair man to fix the problems he KNEW were wrong with the house.Only 1/3 of the problems were fixed two days before we left. Before that time the eight of us had to share one shower, endure asthmatic attack because of the mold, and suffer injures from a couch with nails sticking out that had clearly been broken for a while, and deal with an inadequate kitchen. Our constant communication with the manger resulted in him using vulgar language and cursing my husband out on the phone. This trip was something we had been looking forward to for a long time. We were disappointed with the house and the treatment we endured from the manager. Please renters BE WARE. The house is not as described and the intercoastal water way is full of gasoline and oil. This makes fishing conditions not up to the description of "A Fisherman's Dream". We have never rented from Home Away and probably won't again because of this experience. We had hoped for so much more.

Owner's Response: I am whole-heartedly disappointed in this review. After spending all week trying to do everything I could to try and accommodate your needs! My plumber unfortunately had a previous schedule and got there as soon as he could. I would’ve hoped that you would understand that during the busiest time of the year for everyone at Holden Beach, things can sometimes be delayed a day or two. I also offered you a partial refund but apparently that wasn’t enough as you requested the entire rental fee refunded after staying the entire time. However, I do hope you find a property that will better suit your needs in the future. It just will not be ours. These issues have all since been addressed. I would point future renters to the many positive reviews both before and after this stay.
