About Susan Gudgell

We are long time Orcas Islanders -- Wally grew up on Orcas and Susan was drawn here because of summers with her grandparents on nearby Samish Island. The natural beauty was our initial attraction in building a life here, but the wonderful community of eclectic neighbors have kept us here. It has been a great place to raise our family.

Susan Gudgell purchased this bungalow in 2015

Why Susan Gudgell chose Eastsound

The West Sound Hamlet has always held a special place in our hearts. We have a dock there, and Wally spent part of his childhood years living in the neighborhood. In fact, his family used to have Thanksgiving with the family who owned the Bungalow at the time. We hope someday to relocate there, and were thrilled when this wonderful home became available.

What makes this bungalow unique

The Bungalow is unique, as it has access to all that West Sound offers -- beautiful views, marina, dock, public beach, sailing, a cafe -- yet is tucked privately on a large lot surrounded by lush vegetation. The large level yard is promising as a future garden, and the home's floor plan is cozy and easy to navigate, yet has plenty of room for a family or group. What really topped it off for us is the stream and salt-water estuary on the property's boundary, offering a lullaby of sound day and night.

We were disappointed with the beach access. Hot tub not used because of location.

  • 3 of 5

The house was clean and supplied with most amenities. A fireplace would have been a nice addition especially during a winter stay. Beds were not comfortable. The road in front of the house has relatively no easement so taking walks with the dogs was not possible. However, the owner is very responsive to any questions you may have. There was a problem with the ferry system going to the island and she kept us up to date on the status and even offered to refund a nights stay if we were unable to arrive on that day.

Owner's Response: We're very sorry the Bungalow didn't fulfill the expectations of these guests. The vast majority of our guest experiences have been positive, as reflected in other reviews, but we always strive to improve and appreciate all input. The hot tub is located adjacent to the deck to make the most of water views, and there is a nice, long gravel country lane next to the house for guests to wander if they'd rather be off the main road. The beach access is just 30 yards away. This information as well as other suggestions are available in the guest handbook.

very nice home and area

  • 3 of 5

Large property with great sunset views. House is well arranged for maximum privacy if sharing with others. Furniture is uncomfortable. Master bed very comfortable, but the bed is WAY too high for anyone over 40. Large newish Master bath and we really appreciated the large walk-in shower. Great windows and deck (furniture there is comfortable!). The house is well equipped (kitchen, baths, laundry, linens). Overall enjoyed very much.

Owner's Response: We appreciate the many positive comments in this review. One note: the living room furniture has all been replaced by brand new, high end pieces. Unfortunately, someone had been jumping on the previous set and partially broke the frame. We're confident our future guests will find these replacement pieces very cozy!

Well maintained - stocked with amenities - home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful home away from home. We loved the living space, so comfortable and clean. The big windows provide great light and views for all to enjoy. We stayed here for 3 days, 2 nights and this property had everything we needed. Sadly the power went out 2 different times while we were staying there but Susan was so helpful and kind, making sure we were well taken care of. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a place to stay on Orcas Island!

P.S. LOVED the heated floors in the downstairs bathroom! The whole bathroom is icing on the cake to a beautiful home.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the kind words, and we're very glad you enjoyed our home! I'm sorry for the strange incidents of loss of power -- it's very unusual to have the whole island go out! You handled it with patience and grace, and we appreciate it.

Beautiful place

  • 5 of 5

This is one of the nicest vacation homes I've stayed in in Washington. The house felt quite spacious with its open concept kitchen/living/dining area. We didn't spend much time in the loft (other than sleeping) but there was plenty of space up there too! We had a group of eight and never felt too cramped. The deck, hot tub, and yard were also great. We watched several deer roam around the yard and also used it to play bocce (there's a set provided at the house which is a nice touch). It was a five minute drive to some nice nearby hiking (Turtleback Mountain) and an easy drive to town.

I'd definitely recommend this place and would absolutely stay there again!

Wonderful place on West Sound

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful home. Spacious kitchen, living rooms, and bedrooms. Comfortable beds. Very clean. Nice view of bay (West Sound). Well stocked kitchen, i.e. with cookware, made cooking easy. Orcas Island was a great place to stay with my daughter and her husband for a few days. Beautiful scenery though the extensive wildfires made the views pretty hazy. We did some hiking, birdwatching, and swimming. Lots of good restaurants on the island.
