About Susan Gudgell

We are long time Orcas Islanders -- Wally grew up on Orcas and Susan was drawn here because of summers with her grandparents on nearby Samish Island. The natural beauty was our initial attraction in building a life here, but the wonderful community of eclectic neighbors have kept us here. It has been a great place to raise our family.

Susan Gudgell purchased this bungalow in 2015

Why Susan Gudgell chose Orcas Island

The West Sound Hamlet has always held a special place in our hearts. We have a dock there, and Wally spent part of his childhood years living in the neighborhood. In fact, his family used to have Thanksgiving with the family who owned the Bungalow at the time. We hope someday to relocate there, and were thrilled when this wonderful home became available.

What makes this bungalow unique

The Bungalow is unique, as it has access to all that West Sound offers -- beautiful views, marina, dock, public beach, sailing, a cafe -- yet is tucked privately on a large lot surrounded by lush vegetation. The large level yard is promising as a future garden, and the home's floor plan is cozy and easy to navigate, yet has plenty of room for a family or group. What really topped it off for us is the stream and salt-water estuary on the property's boundary, offering a lullaby of sound day and night.

Bungalow Afterglow

  • 5 of 5

We spent three nights at this property with our daughter, son-in-law and their boys. Location is perfect--the West Sound is quieter and more serene that the East, but retains all the charm that has made Orcas Island so loved.

One always enters a sight unseen rental with trepidation. Are the photos enhanced? Does the plumbing work? etc. This residence exceeded expectations on all fronts. The setting is lovely (next door to the island yacht club), the view of the sound a delight, the large mowed lawn with trees trimmed by deer. A bald eagle fished nearby. Perhaps the best part was the owners' attention to detail. Everything room was well appointed, the kitchen everything one might want (even stocked with herbs). The home has a "lived in" feel--not new and shiny, but comfortable so that one feels immediately at home. The three days of spectacular sunshine might have influenced our glowing opinion, but on a foggy day this would be a perfect place to read a book or share stories.

Thank you, Susan. Hope to visit the island again

Perfect multi-family house! Highly Recommended

  • 5 of 5

CLEAN + CARED FOR

This house is very well cared for, and very clean. Susan makes sure the house is running well, and quickly resolves any issues. There is a high chair, cots, and toys for the kids. Super thoughtful!

LOCATION

It's very close to the ferry -- which makes a great location when you are arriving late in the day, or need to depart early. It's also short drive to Turtleback Mtn.-- which the Moms/Dads would hike/run early in the morning. It's straight up to the top for unbelievable views and a heart-pumping workout!

SPACIOUS

The huge lawn in the front of the house was perfect for our kids -- 2, 5 and 7 years old. There is even a rocky little beach across the street (you would need to be with kids to cross road) -- that's perfect for throwing rocks in the water; and watching sunset with a glass of Prosecco :) The lovely view of the water/marina can be seen from most of the rooms, kitchen and deck. Although the house is located on the road, it is very quiet and we never heard the traffic. The lawn is big enough that we never worried about the kids being too close to the road either.

EXCELLENT LAYOUT

My Mom stayed in the downstairs queen, we stayed in the other master bedroom and put our son on the cot (provided by house) -- which was uber-cozy! And my sister's family stayed on the upper floor (with it's own living room) in the two double beds. The top floor was also great for giving the kids a place to play (be loud) that wasn't in the kitchen/living room area. The upstairs is huge and is perfect for families that need some space. There isn't a door, so sometimes the noise from the living room would carry upstairs. However, the living room does have french doors that really modified the noise.

HIGHLIGHTS

Susan was patient and enthusiastic in giving us great recommendations, and always promptly answered my million questions before our arrival! We had a 2 year old and a 70+ year old grandma with us, so our activity was minimal (the house is great for just chilling out)-- but here's what we enjoyed during our four day stay:

- Mt. Constitution Drive / Picnic

- Moran State Park -- waterfall hike (easy) + playground area (Moms walked around Cascade Lake, while Dads played with kids at beach/playground)

- Hike to Obstruction Pass Beach (easy)

- Rented kayaks for one hour in Crescent bay (younger kids hung with a parent, then we switched)

- Dinner at New Leaf Cafe

- Ice Cream in East Sound

*I highly recommend this property!*

Relaxing Location

  • 4 of 5

The Bungalow was just right for a girl's weekend celebration.

As stated in the reviews we had read, the kitchen is well-stocked and the great room is spacious. The upstairs also has an abundance of room.

The disappointment was the the mattresses downstairs. They are so bowed that it really isn't a comfortable slumber. The rooms are all clean and fresh.

Having stayed the first weekend of May, the hot tub and bbq weren't ready for use. The hot tub had a film of scum on the top and there was not propane for the bbq we had planned.

Owner's Response: Thank you for staying with us! We will definitely check out the mattress situation -- in our dozens of comments we haven't heard of this before, but want to ensure everything is as comfortable as possible. I wish we could have addressed any issues with the hot tub and barbecue; we have contact information at the house and are poised to assist with guest concerns around the clock. We have amped up our hot tub cleaning schedule between visits and the barbecue works year around. There is a hose on the side leading to a 500 gallon propane tank next to the house, so perhaps the absence of a small tank at the barbecue itself caused the assumption it was not fueled. We always appreciate constructive feedback to act upon, and are glad you enjoyed our home otherwise.

Fabulous vacation home!

  • 5 of 5

The Bungalow is a wonderful place for a family vacation. The setting is so beautiful and peaceful and the large yard is perfect for kids to run and play. The house is clean and well maintained with a fully equipped kitchen. Sitting outside on the deck facing the marina as the sun sets is the perfect way to end the day. We loved our stay!

The location and view is very nice. The house itself is really nice. The kitchen is nice and well stocked.

The house is easily accesible, and does not require any steps to get in the first floor.

The property was everything we were told!

  • 4 of 5

We planned months ago to together with our kids/grandkids during spring break. We wanted a nice place that was big enough for the 8 of us. We narrowed it down to two places before deciding on the Bungalow and we are glad we did.

It was a beautiful place in a good location, clean, well kept. The owners were very helpful and we loved the ease of checking in and out. The weather was typical of the Sound in spring, but we were not there for the weather. Lots of comfortable room for all of us.
