About Kathy McGuinn

I am a 4th generation native of Western North Carolina.I am a nurse for over 35 years and run a home care company. My children are grown now and do not need this large home as I will be traveling. My daughter will be managing the property. She is a nurse as well and has other 5 star reviewed properties that she owns and manages as well.

Kathy McGuinn purchased this house in 1998

Why Kathy McGuinn chose Asheville

Quiet and beautiful home with a porch on the back overlooking a creek located only minutes from downtown Asheville that is owned and personally managed by the family that owns it.

What makes this house unique

Our family has loved this property for many years as it is a great getaway for enjoying the Asheville area and the Blue Ridge mountains but is a private haven to enjoy family and friends when you all are taking a break together with the great back porch and and bold creek and play area. It is so large so there is lots of common space and private spaces for a large group.

Fantastic vacation

  • 5 of 5

Great, comfortable, spacious, clean house close to downtown Asheville. Everything was great, esp the small touches like the beer and chocolate and the owner was super responsive. This was a great alternative to a hotel, esp for our family with children. Highly recommended!

HORRIBLE rental experience - do not rent

  • 1 of 5

I regret that I have to write this review. But everything we experienced from arrival to departure was disappointing. We rented this home for a family gathering to celebrate both Mother's Day as well as my son's graduation from UNCA. Here is what we found:

1. Smell in the house on arrival (it was mildew and dirt / grease)

2. Parking space – insufficient as home is advertised for 13-15 people

3. NASTY gas grill – old food remains on rusty grate, EMPTY fuel tank

4. GREASY filthy oven – smoked on preheat, set off all house fire alarms

5. Mildew on multiple shower curtains

6. Lacks normal kitchen items – simple things like measuring cups

7. Mismatched kitchen plates / glasses, many chipped – looks like left overs from your grandmother’s kitchen

8. Mismatched linens – Master bedroom was the only exception to this

9. Mattresses need to be replaced in several bedrooms, particularly downstairs

10. A single door key for use by 10 people

11. NO instructions for cable or WIFI

I contacted the owner via email and phone call the morning after our arrival to convey the issues. She did come over while we toured the Biltmore and addressed the grill, replaced the shower curtains and vacuumed the dirty filters. However additional issues including the OVEN happened that evening as we cooked for 12 people. She did not come over again, but she did agree to refund a portion of our payment due to ongoing issues.

I could go on and on but I will not as it does not help. To be clear, I have rented from VRBO internationally at the following locations:

1. Paris center apartment – April 2017

2. Amish country house – June 2016

3. Swiss mountain villa – 5 times 2012 – 2013

4. French Riviera house 2009

I would have reviewed all of my prior VRBO rentals as 4 or 5 stars. We were always met at the home buy a local agent or owner to explain the property and make us feel welcome. We had the opposite experience here. I will rate this as one star, but I wish I could give it zero stars.

I have photos and videos of what we experienced which was shared with the owner. Again I am sorry to report this as we have never had this situation previously with VRBO. I will not be soured on VRBO, but I am on any rental from this owner. Prior comments made re deep cleaning needed are an understatement. Rent at your own risk!

Owner's Response: I am so sorry that this was not the experience that was expected! It was not what I expected either! I was experiencing a time that my mother was ill and did not realize that the cleaning crew was not doing their job. I did give a $300 refund for the issues. This person threatened me with putting as bad review on if I did not give her a full refund. She stayed at the home when she had the option to leave. I have 6 other rentals for over 5 years with 5 star reviews. The person that wrote this review had not told me untiI the day were going to have a party where 100 PEOPLE would be coming and going from home and I told that would not be appropriate for the small quiet neighborhood! I had already gotten a call from one of the neighbors that they were loud and late at night arguing over parking a trailer that I was not aware that they were bringing. I have multiple keys and instructions replaced for the wifi and TV I have since replaced them and had the house deep cleaned and replaced shower curtains and linens. As you can see that next person that rented it is in fine shape.

Great location, value & capacity! House needs some TLC. Is NOT walkable to downtown.

  • 4 of 5

We had a great stay! For the price, you can't beat the number of bedrooms, location and proximity to downtown; however, the write up is absolutely inaccurate in that it's not at all walkable. It is a very short and cheap Uber/Lyft ride away. The house comfortably slept our group of 14 and loved that we could bring our dogs but the house. Kathy was nice and easy to work with.

The house could definitely use a deep clean and some updates though. Some of the details really fell through the cracks: grill was disgusting, oven cooking very uneven, mold in the shower, one shower did not get any hot water at all, broken chairs, back porch falling apart, dirty couch made this a 4/5 star for us. A little invest in this property would go a long way since it is such a great space and location.

Not as advertised.

  • 1 of 5

This property is in a location central to the sites of Asheville (Biltmore, downtown, River Arts district) but is situated on the corner of an extremely busy commuter cut through with the heaviest and loudest traffic starting as early as 5am and clearly audible through the night in each of the bedrooms. An outdated but sufficient kitchen is the highlight of this house that has worn furnishings, filthy bathroom and HVAC vents, mildew stained shower curtains, stained carpets, dusty drapes and dressers, terrible lighting, and missing light bulbs – it is in need of care and serious cleaning. Photos of the house are accurate but do not show the wear and tear throughout this house. Photos of the back yard bridge walk and field are also carefully crafted to avoid the real view. This is a house in need of more than a spring cleaning and spruce up.

The owner was sympathetic to concerns we raised about the stained carpet, but it was not addressed until the day of our departure. As the rest of the necessary deep cleaning and maintenance would take some time to accomplish, we are registering our disappointment about the general condition and cleanliness of the house here instead of with the owner, given that it would have been intrusive to have cleaning crews and workmen in the house during our vacation stay. Particularly given the price of this house, we are confident that there are cleaner and quieter options.

Smelled like smoke and needs more kitchen utensils

  • 2 of 5

The house reeked of smoke when we got there. There is a big lack of kitchen utensils. The kitchen rug was covering up some major floor damage. The house sleep 15 but there is only parking for 3. The house is located on a very busy road and most of us couldn't sleep because of the traffic noise. There is also a public bus stop in front of the house.

Owner's Response: Hi Amy, I am so sorry that your group did not have a great experience! The wooden kitchen floor was replaced and it is a different color of wood. It is not damaged. The rug is just for cosmetic reasons. No one is ever allowed to smoke in the home! I would love to know what the kitchen needs as no one has ever said it needed something. As far as it being near the road and a bus stop. That is one of the great features of the property. It is only about a mile from downtown and most people that rent are not staying at the house all of the time. There is a huge grassy area across the bridge that is on the property that you can play sports etc. I wish I had known that you thought you did not have but 3 parking spaces. There are 3 others on the other side of the house for a total of 6.
