About Melanie Thomson
We are a family of five, living in Toronto, Canada. My husband and I (Hugo and Melanie) have 3 kids, a boy and two girls (ages 10, 6 and 3 at time of purchase). We had rented a house in neighboring Carrillo in 2013 and fell in love with the area. After doing some research on Costa Rica and specifically the Samara region, we decided this was where we want our eventual home to be.
Melanie Thomson purchased this House in 2014
Why Melanie Thomson chose Sámara
We were drawn to this property for many reasons. The location is private and natural with plenty of space for growing flowers and fruit trees. A multitude of wildlife is practically at our doorstep. We are close enough to the highway and town that getting about is easy. There's convenient access to many shops, restaurants and services - and the beach! - just 2.5 km/1.5mi away - accessible with a short drive, by public transit or even walking if so inclined.
What makes this House unique
At Casita Amarilla you will have privacy and solitude, yet it is only a 5 minute drive into the village of Samara. Our property backs on to the Werner Sauter Biological Reserve, literally right outside the back door. Howler monkeys are frequent visitors in the trees right behind the house, along with the occasional coati (pizotes), iguanas, and many types of birds.

Perfect for our family of 4 with room to spare
If you like privacy and wildlife with all of the amenities, you will love this place! The property owner and manager were accommodating and friendly. We also loved Samara and the local people. At the property we watched countless birds, coati, monkeys, iguana and some quarreling kinkajou our last night there. We had geckos and a few different insects (the grasshoppers are enormous!) in and outside the house, as well as bats clinging to the screen outside which were fun to watch. We used this base for a vacation of surfing (a drive to Guionnes gave us better surfing), wildlife tours ( Samara Adventures was good and we would recommend), beach activities (pick up beach soccer games, volleyball, body boarding , beach walking, horse riding). The property was well kept and stocked with more than we needed. We felt lucky to have found such a great rental that suited our family perfectly. I hope we can go back! The grocery store in town closest to the beach was a bit pricey. All of them had prices comparable or even higher than in the US. Eating out is comparable to US prices. We really liked Soda Ana (a few blocks out of the main town) and a little French inspired restaurant and ice cream stand in a square across the street from the beach, but there were so many good ones to choose from.
Privacy in the jungle
This was our sixth trip to Costa Rica and our second to the Nicoya Peninsula; this was by far the nicest place we have stayed. The house was clean, spacious, and comfortable. We enjoyed the surrounding wildlife of howler monkeys, birds, and coati. If we return to this area, we will certainly stay here again. The Playa Carrillo was by far the most beautiful in the area.
Everything you need + amazing night sky watching
Clean an comfortable with everything you need for an extended stay.
Close to Playa's Samara and Carrillo. Interesting wildlife to watch and hear (howler monkeys).
Amazing night sky viewing when sitting out by the pool in the evening.
The WiFi is a bit spotty, but the owner & property manager and trying to make it better.
Sheer perfection! We are leaving totally blissed out.
Thank you Melanie and Melissa for a wonderful week! This was our first experience with renting a house! Traditionally when in Costa Rica we stay in small boutique hotels. The house is exactly as advertised, beautiful home that's well laid out and fully equipped! The property has a great flow on an absolutely private lot carved out of a beautiful peice of jungle.. we saw many different birds and butterflies, a troop of howler monkeys, and insects. The banana lined pool and rancho area are a great place to spend the heat of the day.. A five minute drive is the town of Samara, great restaurants, groceries and of coarse the beach.. Within an hour from the house are many beautiful and secluded beaches.. we had a fantastic experience and now we will be renting houses from now on in Costa Rica!! Many thanks to Melissa for waiting after hours for us to arrive!! Our plane was delayed for snow:) And a big thank you to Melanie for your promt emails and great info prior to our week. Your family has a wonderful home in a beautiful country that you should be proud of! Thank you for sharing your property!! Pura vida !!! Cory&Shanna
Thank you, Cory for the positive review! We're happy that you enjoyed your stay in our home and would be pleased to have you back any time.
Heaven on Earth
Thank you to Melanie and family for sharing your beautiful home! We stayed for 2 weeks and had the time of our lives. This home is spotless, the kitchen is fully stocked and the beds are very comfortable. There are plenty of DVD's BUT you won't need them:)
Melissa the property manager came up to the house the day we arrived and walked us through the entire property, this was very much appreciated. Further to this, she is available for any questions throughout your stay.
Our favourite spot was the rancho/pool. We spent much of our time relaxing and enjoying the nature, perfect for us. Skeeters was sunning with us and the coati mundi came from the jungle for daily visits. The grounds are stunning and beautifully maintained.
We also enjoyed our daily morning walks into Samara where we were left meeting the neighbors and many locals along our way:) We have stayed in and around Samara previously but this was the best stay so far. Again, thank you Melanie! A home like yours is why we want to keep coming back to Samara!
Thank you for the wonderful review! We're glad that you enjoyed your stay in our home and would be happy to have you back any time.
Samara is a laid back village with an authentic Tico feel and is a popular destination among both Tico's and tourists. A variety of shops, services, restaurants and bars are within walking distance along the mainstreet of Samara. A 5 minute walk from the entrance of Samara will put you on the beach. Because Samara Beach is protected by a reef, the surf is gentle and safe for children. There are many local activities available, with several adventure companies offering various tours and activities. Several other beautiful beaches are with 10 minutes to 1/2 hour drive from Samara; Playa Carrillo to the south and Playas Buenavista and Barrigona to the North.
