About Melanie Thomson

We are a family of five, living in Toronto, Canada. My husband and I (Hugo and Melanie) have 3 kids, a boy and two girls (ages 10, 6 and 3 at time of purchase). We had rented a house in neighboring Carrillo in 2013 and fell in love with the area. After doing some research on Costa Rica and specifically the Samara region, we decided this was where we want our eventual home to be.

Melanie Thomson purchased this house in 2014

Why Melanie Thomson chose Guanacaste

We were drawn to this property for many reasons. The location is private and natural with plenty of space for growing flowers and fruit trees. A multitude of wildlife is practically at our doorstep. We are close enough to the highway and town that getting about is easy. There's convenient access to many shops, restaurants and services - and the beach! - just 2.5 km/1.5mi away - accessible with a short drive, by public transit or even walking if so inclined.

What makes this house unique

At Casita Amarilla you will have privacy and solitude, yet it is only a 5 minute drive into the village of Samara. Our property backs on to the Werner Sauter Biological Reserve, literally right outside the back door. Howler monkeys are frequent visitors in the trees right behind the house, along with the occasional coati (pizotes), iguanas, and many types of birds.

Left on Feb 19, 2017 for a stay in Feb 2017

Close to the town of Samara on the west coast of Costa Rica, this villa is perfect to share with another couple, family vacation, or for a private place to relax. Fully equipped kitchen and a lovely pool to cool off in after a day at the beach or excursions elsewhere. Plenty of opportunity to see colourful birds, butterflies, monkeys and a lovely view of the mountains from the cabana by the pool. Landscaped with palm trees, bamboo and native plants provide privacy and a gentle rustle in the evening breeze. We hope to return to enjoy more of the culture and wildlife.

Heaven on Earth

Thank you to Melanie and family for sharing your beautiful home! We stayed for 2 weeks and had the time of our lives. This home is spotless, the kitchen is fully stocked and the beds are very comfortable. There are plenty of DVD's BUT you won't need them:)

Melissa the property manager came up to the house the day we arrived and walked us through the entire property, this was very much appreciated. Further to this, she is available for any questions throughout your stay.

Our favourite spot was the rancho/pool. We spent much of our time relaxing and enjoying the nature, perfect for us. Skeeters was sunning with us and the coati mundi came from the jungle for daily visits. The grounds are stunning and beautifully maintained.

We also enjoyed our daily morning walks into Samara where we were left meeting the neighbors and many locals along our way:) We have stayed in and around Samara previously but this was the best stay so far. Again, thank you Melanie! A home like yours is why we want to keep coming back to Samara!

Fantastic vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Melanie and Melissa for a wonderful week! This was our first experience with renting a house! Traditionally when in Costa Rica we stay in small boutique hotels. The house is exactly as advertised, beautiful home that's well laid out and fully equipped! The property has a great flow on an absolutely private lot carved out of a beautiful peice of jungle.. we saw many different birds and butterflies, a troop of howler monkeys, and insects. The banana lined pool and rancho area are a great place to spend the heat of the day.. A five minute drive is the town of Samara, great restaurants, groceries and of coarse the beach.. Within an hour from the house are many beautiful and secluded beaches.. we had a fantastic experience and now we will be renting houses from now on in Costa Rica!! Many thanks to Melissa for waiting after hours for us to arrive!! Our plane was delayed for snow:) And a big thank you to Melanie for your promt emails and great info prior to our week. Your family has a wonderful home in a beautiful country that you should be proud of! Thank you for sharing your property!! Pura vida !!! Cory&Shanna

Nicely kept house, good location, great pool

  • 5 of 5

Very clean, well maintained house with great private pool and outdoor veranda/cooking area. Well equipped kitchen and living area. Bedrooms are nicely decorated and the a/c's work well although they are really just needed at night as there is a nice breeze throughout the day and evening.

Good location, about 5 minutes from the town of Samara.

Property managers are very helpful and responsive.

An amazing spot up close with the nature of Costa Rica

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Melanie and Family for what our gang thought was one of our highlight accommodations in our two week adventure in Costa Rica! Melanie provided me with exceptional information regarding the property after booking and good instructions to find the property manager, Melissa's office. We picked up the keys in town and found Melissa's office easily. Melissa was very friendly and helpful. A few minutes after our arrival at the property a family of howler monkeys came and hung around in the trees close to the house to see who was visiting. The house was well stocked from bathroom/pool towel selection to all kitchen amenities one might need and a great selection of DVD movies. The beds were comfortable and we all slept extremely well after hours at the beach surfing and boogie boarding. The house was clean, well ventilated and stayed remarkably cool considering the outside temperature. The windows were all insect screened throughout. The kids had a blast in the pool during all parts of the day. Evening swims were special with the lights around the rancho and the brilliant views of the night sky. Skitters, the resident rancho iguana, was sure a treat to see sunning herself daily. The drive was about 5 minutes from town which we all found quite refreshing to be tucked up on the hill, in forested area away from the town noises of Samara. The sounds from the nature reserve were all very interesting from the cicadas to howler monkeys. With the fans on in the rooms through the night the howlers did not significantly disturb us in the morning hours. The beaches of Samara and Carrillo were perfect for our family. They were safer than some of the other beaches we visited as there was no significant rip tide due to the reef located miles out, although waves were still big enough to play in. A perfect beach for families and beginner surfers. The town of Samara had everything one might need. We went on the local zip line tour and it was fantastic as well as a horseback ride on the beach. It was a memorable 7 night stay for our family of five. We certainly will stay at the Casita Amarilla again!

Private and backs up to the jungle

  • 5 of 5

We spent five wonderful days at Casita Amarilla. The layout of the house is just right for two couples. Lots of open great room type space, well ventilated so AC not necessary in the great room. The house is relatively new, well maintained and very clean. The showers are out of sight. The kitchen is very well equipped. Take your own dishwasher and washing machine soap, the little pods work great. The landscaping is very nice. The pool and ranchero are in the the front of the house which sounds wierd, but the way the lot and house is laid out it really works well. The WiFi worked very well. The AC in the bedrooms made for a great night rest.

The location was perfect for me, away from the hustle of Samara. Samara has everything you will need. We would go into town everyday and explore. You haven't lived till you head out of town to the local Pescadoria (fish monger). 3.8 kilo snapper, $20, of course you have to fillet it yourself. Great on the grill down at the pool/ranchero. Take advantage of the Carrillo Adventures porpoise watching, fishing, snorkeling tour. The Captain will work with you on how much watching, fishing or snorkeling you want to do during your 3+ hours with them. We snagged a couple small edibles, black fin and spanish mackerel. They fillet them for you. less than 3 hours from sea to plate. Doesn't get much better than that. We also made a short trip to Islita, an artisian community a couple hours away on a very rough road, but that's CR. You have to go through Carrillo, about 5 miles South. That is the most beautiful beach I have ever seen. And you must eat at El Colibri Steakhouse for dinner in Carrillo, fabulous.

Best of all were the property managers Melissa and David at Samara Property Rental. They were very responsive, full of suggestions, and just down right pleasant. They were a great asset to making our stay care free.

Samara is a laid back village with an authentic Tico feel and is a popular destination among both Tico's and tourists. A variety of shops, services, restaurants and bars are within walking distance along the mainstreet of Samara. A 5 minute walk from the entrance of Samara will put you on the beach. Because Samara Beach is protected by a reef, the surf is gentle and safe for children. There are many local activities available, with several adventure companies offering various tours and activities. Several other beautiful beaches are with 10 minutes to 1/2 hour drive from Samara; Playa Carrillo to the south and Playas Buenavista and Barrigona to the North.
