The place was clean, but it had some issues

  • 2 of 5

The house was clean, and it had plenty of space, but it had some issues. I realize that these old beach homes need some renovation, but I am not sure what can be done with this one. The sloping floors in this house made us dizzy. My biggest complaints are the odd steps from the bathroom to the kitchen and the broken wooden step on the main entrance. My son stubbed his toe on the bathroom step. I slipped and fell on the wet wooden broken step. That was not fun. My back still aches. I would encourage the owner to fix that step before someone gets seriously hurt. A simple wood screw would do the trick in securing the step. Other than these issues, we did enjoy our stay in Grand Haven. I will do more homework in looking for our next vacation home.

Oh sooo. Quaint!

Perfect for us. Off the main drag for Coast Guard Festival but close enough to walk to all the events.

Cozy, convenient spot with character

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four (2 kids, 6 and 8 years old) loved our week here. The house definitely has some structural quirks -- there are a bunch of little half-steps going into different rooms, and spots where the floor slopes so much you might feel like you're trying to walk on the deck of a ship, and if you're 6 feet tall or taller you're probably going to whack your head on the ceiling at the bottom of the steps a few times. But the house overall is clean, cute, cozy, and super-close to everything in town. Downtown is a short walk away, and the beach is just a couple-minute drive. We didn't do much during the week except sleep late, go to the beach, and eat out, so the house was just home base for washing off sand and crashing at the end of the day. But it was a perfectly comfortable home away from home.

Comfortable and charming

  • 4 of 5

The house is very old and has some issues with level flooring. There are small steps throughout, particularly at the thresholds and the stairs are steep. This might not be the best choice for families with small children. Having said that, the house is charming! Two of the 3 upstairs bedrooms are quite big, the other one is tiny. The first floor bedroom is also small, but bedrooms are mainly for sleeping, right? The main living area is spacious, comfy and very clean. There are board games, books and VHS tapes, cable (which froze our second night) and a radio/CD player. The kitchen is well stocked and has newer appliances. The one bathroom is ample. And if you like repurposed decor, there's plenty to admire. My one complaint (other than the cable not working properly) is that the water in the stand up shower is either frigid or scalding. There's no medium. The walk to town or the riverfront is 3 blocks and there is a lot to do and see. The lakefront is more like a 2-mile walk, so be prepared to drive if you don't want to walk

There is also a dunes preserve across the river which we drove to and it made for a pleasant walk.

Charming cottage in a great location!

  • 4 of 5

This cottage has an old, charming feel with modern amenities! With four bedrooms, there was enough space for our party of eight. The kitchen was very well equipped with everything we needed. The yard was great, the house is set back from the road so we didn't have to worry about our kids running to the street. The firepit was a nice feature, and we enjoyed it. A short walk down the street to an ice cream shop and a quick drive to the state park. There were beach toys, bag, chair and umbrella to take with us to the beach. This house is very old, and there are small thresholds everywhere which were hard to navigate for our younger kids, which is why we gave four stars. Brooke was great to work with and was quick to respond with answers to our questions. We would love to stay again when we come back to the area.
