Cozy, convenient spot with character

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four (2 kids, 6 and 8 years old) loved our week here. The house definitely has some structural quirks -- there are a bunch of little half-steps going into different rooms, and spots where the floor slopes so much you might feel like you're trying to walk on the deck of a ship, and if you're 6 feet tall or taller you're probably going to whack your head on the ceiling at the bottom of the steps a few times. But the house overall is clean, cute, cozy, and super-close to everything in town. Downtown is a short walk away, and the beach is just a couple-minute drive. We didn't do much during the week except sleep late, go to the beach, and eat out, so the house was just home base for washing off sand and crashing at the end of the day. But it was a perfectly comfortable home away from home.

Comfortable and charming

  • 4 of 5

The house is very old and has some issues with level flooring. There are small steps throughout, particularly at the thresholds and the stairs are steep. This might not be the best choice for families with small children. Having said that, the house is charming! Two of the 3 upstairs bedrooms are quite big, the other one is tiny. The first floor bedroom is also small, but bedrooms are mainly for sleeping, right? The main living area is spacious, comfy and very clean. There are board games, books and VHS tapes, cable (which froze our second night) and a radio/CD player. The kitchen is well stocked and has newer appliances. The one bathroom is ample. And if you like repurposed decor, there's plenty to admire. My one complaint (other than the cable not working properly) is that the water in the stand up shower is either frigid or scalding. There's no medium. The walk to town or the riverfront is 3 blocks and there is a lot to do and see. The lakefront is more like a 2-mile walk, so be prepared to drive if you don't want to walk

There is also a dunes preserve across the river which we drove to and it made for a pleasant walk.

Charming cottage in a great location!

  • 4 of 5

This cottage has an old, charming feel with modern amenities! With four bedrooms, there was enough space for our party of eight. The kitchen was very well equipped with everything we needed. The yard was great, the house is set back from the road so we didn't have to worry about our kids running to the street. The firepit was a nice feature, and we enjoyed it. A short walk down the street to an ice cream shop and a quick drive to the state park. There were beach toys, bag, chair and umbrella to take with us to the beach. This house is very old, and there are small thresholds everywhere which were hard to navigate for our younger kids, which is why we gave four stars. Brooke was great to work with and was quick to respond with answers to our questions. We would love to stay again when we come back to the area.

Not What We Were Expecting

  • 1 of 5

The cottage is in a great location for walking, biking or jogging downtown and to the boardwalk. However, it was very old. I don't mind old but, there was no charm to it. It was full of spider webs. They were literally growing up the walls. The windows did not have coverings on them from the waist up. We ended up putting pizza boxes in the windows so we could undress in the bathroom. The house smelled very musty. Our allergies were an issue because of it. The floors were extremely crooked. I was dizzy standing in the kitchen and taking a shower. I've never experienced anything like it! Finding a switch that worked to turn on lights was a challenge. When we finally found a switch only half of the lights would turn on. The pantry closet was shorted out, so we never did have a light in there. We paid big money to stay at this cottage and needless to say was very disappointed. Brooke was great to work with! She was friendly and accommodating sending her cleaning lady over to do a once over for the spider webs. She did check the lighting situation for us as well. She also sent her exterminator over to spray for the wasps that we had to dodge walking into the house because they must have had a nest in the ground right under the porch. Unfortunately, we won't be staying here again. It was certainly not comfy, cozy for the 5 of us.

Owner's Response: I am so sorry that it was not what you expected. This was Coast Guard week, so all of the cottages in the area are at a higher premium. This is a very old home; with quirks that many people like, as it adds character. In the 5 years of my family managing and renting out this cottage, this has been the first time we have had negative feedback. In the future, you might consider #900783. This home is newer and has more of the amenities that fit your needs. Sincerely, Brooke

Great location

  • 4 of 5

The location is great. Two blocks to downtown with shops and restaurants. 4 blocks to boardwalk with total 1 mile to state park entrance from house. Easy walk.or take trolley.

House has 4 bedrooms. 1 down and 3 up. The rooms are good size. The stairs are steep if someone has difficulty with stairs they won't be able to climb but there is bedroom down.

1 bath which we were able to schedule around.

Fully stocked kitchen with microwave, stove/oven, dishwasher, toaster pots and pans.

House is clean. Two window AC did the job.

Righteous Cousine is place to try for eating. On 7th near Columbus.
