About the property

2 Bedrooms, 1 Bathroom, 4 Sleeps

My home is a recently renovated Creole double shotgun from the 1800's, all new plumbing and electric, two bedrooms-one master (or rather mistress) sleeps 2 with a queen sized bed, and a bedroom with a loft futon bed with memory foam (sleeps 2), one bathroom with a shower (the bathtub is plumbed outside), internet, and most importantly a front porch and fantastic neighbors.

Even though the house was renovated in 2014, I have kept many of the original elements like pocket doors, cypress hutch in the kitchen and the lovely heart of pine floors. The house is my primary residence and filled with art and oddities- objects that tell stories. The stove is an O'keefe and Merritt from the 1950's that I use every day.

My home is half a block from Bayou St John, an important waterway in the early days of the city that gives the neighborhood a Venetian feel. It is located in the heart of New Orleans, in my favorite neighborhood- Faubourg St John- within walking distance to City Park (home of New Orleans Museum of Art NOMA, excellent sculpture garden, live oaks that were the sites of duels as well as wedding proposals, boat and bike rentals etc), the Fairgrounds, grocery stores like Terranova which makes the best sausage in the city and has been in the neighborhood for generations. Canseco's is another family run grocery across the street (Esplanade) from Terranova's and next to the racetrack. There are fabulous restaurants, like Lola's for tapas (incredible garlic shrimp and lamp lollipops), Cafe Degas- a super romantic French restaurant with a tree growing in the middle that pays homage to the impressionist painter who lived down Esplande for a spell; Liuzza's by the Track with killer BBQ shrimp po-boys and bloody marys, and close to the greatest steak in the city- Crescent City Steakhouse where Ruth, founder of Ruth's Chris steak house, once waited tables. Make sure to sit in one of the curtained booths. For breakfast there is Pagoda Cafe further down Esplanade or the Ruby Slipper in Mid-city. There are too many restaurants to name them all.

Faubourg St John is centrally located. Esplanade has a bike path to the quarter but if you go by car it is a ten minute drive at most. It is easy to get uptown as well, or to and from the airport via I-10. The Lafitte Greenway will be opening soon- a bike path that will connect the French Quarter to the Lake.

About Susan Gisleson

I am a 5th generation New Orleanian; an artist and educator. I recently did a house swap with a lovely couple from Sonoma and realized that staying in someone's home was more humane than staying in a hotel. I feel fortunate to live where I live and would like to share that feeling. The street I live on is one of the original routes that Native Americans would make from the lake to the settlement that would later become New Orleans- the French Quarter- which is the original footprint of the city and only one square mile. Because of this ancient route, there are clam shells in between the sidewalk and the street, a reminder of history, permanent breadcrumbs.

Susan Gisleson purchased this house in 2014

Why Susan Gisleson chose Mid-City

I am the third owner of this home. The previous owner lived here for 80 years. No one wants to leave this block. There are other homeowners who have been here for generations. It is a special place.

What makes this house unique

After an exhausting day at Jazz Fest, there is nothing like walking home- not having to drive, not having to balance on a bicycle, or wait in the long, long line for cabs that kind of resembles one of the circles of Dante's inferno with sunburnt festival goers, disoriented and bleary eyed.

Loved staying at Susan's place! The house and decoration was phenomenal and it was do-able walk to City Park where we had an event. Would definitely stay here again in the future!

We had a wonderful stay at Susan's. Details - super comfy bed(s) linens, ace central air,

great shower, hot water, big kitchen, porch to sit + look at historic Nola street..

We walked to Jazzfest + ate all dinners on Esplanade, ( 10 min walk) it was the first time we didn't even go

to the French Quarter !

Susan is lovely AND an artist so if you look in any corner there is something beautiful + cool to see!
