For outdoor and nature enthusiasts, this area of the Willamette Valley has an abundance of opportunities. Minto Brown Park, located on River Road, is a 600 acre wildlife refuge with walking and bike paths and sits next to the river. Ankeny Bird Refuge has walking paths and different viewing stations for wildlife and is found out on S. Liberty. For kayakers, there is a spot to put in on the Willamette River on River Road S or if adventurous, put in at Buena Vista Ferry , stopping along the way at Rogue Brewery and come out in Independence. Just South of Monmouth on 99W is Peavy Arboretum, probably THE best place for mountain biking, jogging, hiking, walking in the area. This place is so big, there is always somewhere new to explore. Start at the Arboretum, take Calloway trail up to the lake where they have the logger teams training area. You try walking out over the water on a thin log and see how far you get! From the lake, Powder House trail takes you up to amazing views of Kings Valley.
No description would be complete without the mention of our wineries. I will leave it to you to discover which ones to try, just know, there are A LOT! If craft beer is your thing, you are in luck! The growler fill station is alive and well, as are breweries. The closest for a growler fill is Growl Movement on S Commercial. But most places with taps, such as Venti's, will fill the growler. So fill your glass and enjoy on your own private deck, watching the sunset and life is good!
