About the property

4 Bedroom Mid-century Classic Hidden in the Enchanted Forest of the Berkshires

Mid-century home nestled among 2k+ acres of state forest minutes to Tanglewood

If you are looking for a quiet woodland retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city, this is the place for you. Located equal distance from New York City and Boston (2.5 hours from each), this mid-century home is set among more than 2,000 acres of state forest. Secluded on a dead end dirt road with only two other houses, this home makes for a perfect family getaway.

The house is approximately 2,500 square feet and features 4 bedrooms and an additional sleeping loft with its own second mini kitchen. There are 3 bathrooms (1 full and 2 3/4).

The house was remodeled in 2014/early 2015 and features hardwood floors, a vaulted ceiling in the living room, 2 fireplaces, a baby grand piano, a sun-filled solarium, family room with 55" LED SmartTV, gardens with outdoor pergola seating area, 2 outdoor decks, a master bedroom with a glass door opening to the outdoors, a children's room with 1 full size bed and queen futon, guest room #1 with Queen bed, and guest room #2 with full sized bed and twin bunk beds. The house has a wi-fi + AirPlay enabled stereo system with built-in speakers throughout the house. High speed wi-fi internet is included. Washer and Dryer. There is a seasonal stream on the property, and lots of hiking trails within a few minutes drive. There is a Weber 3-burner gas grill on the deck that overlooks the gardens, and an outdoor eating table for summer BBQs.

The house is located on Fog Hill about 8 miles outside the hamlet of Austerlitz, NY in Columbia County. It's in the Berkshire foothills (sometimes referred to as the Taconic Hills in NY), and lies at an altitude over 1,500ft., which makes it naturally air conditioned in the summer.

The kitchen is stocked with pots, pans, dishes, glasses, utensils, small and large appliances, and pretty much anything you will need to make your meals. There's an excellent supermarket in neighboring Chatham, called The Price Chopper, which has an enormous selection of local and organic produce and meat, as well as all the other staples. There are also dozens of local farm stands in the area where you can buy seasonal produce directly from area farmers.

To the east, our neighboring town is West Stockbridge, MA -- the site of Alice's Restaurant and the Arlo Guthrie Foundation church (3 miles away). Go a little further and you'll be in Lenox, MA -- home to Tanglewood, the summer residence of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. It's a short drive to all major Berkshires attraction, including Jacob's Pillow, Mt. Greylock and Great Barrington. To our west is the Hudson Valley, a vibrant and thriving community of organic farmers, artists, antiques dealers and winemakers. The town of Hudson (25 minutes away) has been called the "new Williamsburg" because so many artisans have fled the overpriced burg in Brooklyn and set up workshops and stores on the historic Warren Street in Hudson. If you like antique stores, French cafes and gourmet dining, there's a lot to explore. There are dozens of state parks within a 45 minute radius that offer hiking, swimming, boating, mountaineering, fishing and more.

We have some items at the house which may be useful if you are traveling with an infant or toddler:

+ Pack n' Play

+ High chair with removable tray table

+ Baby monitors (1 base, 2 remote monitors)

+ White noise machine

+ toddler forks, knives, plates, bowls and cups

bath toys

+ baby shampoo + soap

+ children's toilet seat

+ bathroom step stool

+ childrens books

+ toys

About Kurt Langer

Welcome! We are Kurt, Mio and Kailash, and we're happy that you found our home in the enchanted woods of Fog Hill. We live in Brooklyn, but we're originally from New England and Tokyo, respectively. Kurt grew up in Lexington, MA, did his undergrad at Brown University, and is a documentary filmmaker. Mio grew up in Kawasaki, Japan, did her undergrad at Los Angeles School of Art, and is a fine artist & graphic designer. Kailash is still growing up. We love to travel, and collect folk art from the places we visit. We also love mid-century design, music, art and walking in the woods.

Kurt Langer purchased this house in 2014

Why Kurt Langer chose Austerlitz

We fell in love with this house the moment we walked into the solarium and saw the view. The house is surrounded by trees, but light was pouring through the large picture windows and it felt like we were way up in a treehouse. It's only gotten better from there. We wanted a weekend home that would be a great place to relax and unwind, and one that would always give us more to explore. We're incredibly grateful that we found just the place, and we're happy we can share it with others.

What makes this house unique

Each season brings a completely different form of natural beauty. In winter, we see the first sunlight over the Berkshires glimmering off the snow-crested trees; In spring, there are more shades of green than you'll ever see in one place; In summer, the wild blueberries and blackberries take over the forest floor and gardens come to life; And in fall, the maples, oaks, elms and birches dazzle us with foliage. If you love nature, and wilderness in particular, you'll love being here.

Peaceful and Serene

  • 5 of 5

The house is barely visible from the quiet private drive. It is surrounded by tall trees but not so much so that the sun can’t find its way in. When you enter through the mud room, there’s a sign asking that you “kindly remove your shoes” and when you go in you find a comfortable and lived in kitchen with a warm butcher block island. It’s not fancy and the appliances aren’t the newest but everything feels like it makes sense. I think this house was probably built in the 60’s or 70’s and many of the details and esthetic choices are intact. As a child of the 70’s myself, I really appreciated this. It doesn’t feel like a movie set or an interior design homage to the 1970’s (but I think an appreciation of that era has informed a lot of the choices the homeowners have made) although, with a few minor tweaks, this house would feel quite comfortable in “The Ice Storm”. Beyond the kitchen, the ceiling rises up over a living room with a sectional and a piano. To the right is a sunroom that feels like a tree house with a dining table, plush rug and the classic Eames recliner and ottoman (a perfect spot for reading or napping). Downstairs are two bedrooms and a very cute and cozy reading/sleeping nook as well as another sitting area. Back on the entry floor there are two bedrooms (one with a bunkbed). Above the bunkbed room and up a spiral staircase is a loft efficiency with a tiny kitchen, fridge and microwave. There are so many places to sleep and hang out but the house doesn’t feel overwhelming at all. I was honestly a bit sad to leave it.

One Week in the Woods

  • 5 of 5

The house meets all that is said about in its description. It is especially spacious and affords comfortable lodging and meets well family (ies) social requirements. It is clean and well-maintained.

As it says, it is in the midst of the woods affording quiet and restful atmosphere. It is best that supplies are bought in for meals. We planned a non-cooking week so trips to the diner for brunch and restaurants for dinner require some travel.

It is very close to Mass. for example Stockbridge and Great Barrington.

The owner is very accessible for consultation when some technical problems arose.

One caution is that access is difficult for senior citizens (85 and 79 and with canes) because the entrance does not have banisters.

Again, the description of the property tells it all exactly.

Private Haven Close to Stockbridge and other Mass. Attractions

  • 5 of 5

Exactly as promised: very clean, well designed, bay windows facing the forest on all sides, neighboring houses at a great distance. Everything worked: kitchen, hot water, heat, fireplace. Elegant minimalist decor in living areas and bedrooms; nice furniture, chairs, couches, and beds. This is a very well cared for house and our family group was completely comfortable.

It's different being on the edge of the state forest, as opposed to the houses in Lenox or Pittsfield and other towns, but if you like walking outdoors this must be great in the summer.

Kurt was great to deal with, answered his phone quickly when we had one question about an appliance, and otherwise left us alone. We will look forward to coming back.

Beautiful large clean home in lovely wooded setting

  • 5 of 5

The house was perfect for 3 families. Each had its own space and bathroom. The children were 4 and 2. There were plenty of toys there. The house is beautiful and very private and woodsy. We highly recommend
