About the property

1 Bedroom apt(Queen-bd), full kitchen, laundry(w/d) tile shower/tub, pine floor

This gracious Federal Style home is within easy walking distance of Downtown Camden, a town repeatedly voted one of the “#5 in the 30 Most Beautiful Small Towns in the World” and tops on many other lists.

Our gracious home was built in 1810 by Benjamin Cushing, Esq. who served from 1800 to 1830 as Camden’s post-master, town selectman from 1799-1802, and after the Maine became a State went one year to Portland as Representative. During its long history 36 High St was one of Camden’s most prestigious boarding establishments known as The Homestead and boasting many influential guests including President Calvin Coolidge who stayed in the home during his presidency. His signature can be enjoyed in the home's guestbook.

We have updated the apartment with new appliances, granite counter tops, tile shower, washer and dryer. However, in renovating, the 200-year-old beans, pine floor and character of the 1810 house have been preserved. This beautiful apartment is for adults only (no children or pets please) and we hope our guests find it romantic, relaxing, efficient, comfortable and clean.

Our home is set an amazing vacation location; only 5 minutes walk to town. Camden has always boasted fabulous specialty shops, unique boutiques and distinctive galleries.

These lovely shops tempt you with everything from handcrafted Maine goods like fine jewelry, designer clothing to the works of local artists to one-of-a-kind imports. You will find novelty items for the kids, specialty gifts, clothes for the night out or daily wear. If antiques are what you're looking for, you'll find some of the most amazing collections of treasures right under your nose!

If sailing the coast of Maine is your kind of thing, a Camden Maine Windjammer cruise is the perfect way to explore it. Set sail on a tall sailing ship where you can experience the scenic coast of Maine from the unique vantage point of the sea. It is only in Camden that you’ll find a fleet of Windjammers. There are plenty of islands and protected coves that serve as anchorages for these tall sailing ships.

Maine seafood is at the top of the menu in many local restaurants, with Maine lobster leading the way. With local fishermen often landing your dinner at the dock that day, you would be hard pressed to find fresher seafood anywhere than on the Maine coast. Seafood restaurants in this part of coastal Maine are known for the "Catch of the Day" and the freshest prepared seafood. But while seafood choices are abundant, Camden Maine restaurants also offer world class cuisine, creative innovative American dishes, French and Italian dishes, traditional comfort food, and health conscious fare, among many other options.

During the second weekend of February, the annual U.S. National Toboggan Championships are held at the town-owned Camden Snow Bowl. This nationally-known race started as a lark for something to do during the long Maine winters, and more than 20 years later is one of New England's premier cold-weather events. Most racers arrive in costume, and 100% percent of race revenue is used to offset operating expenses for this recreation area.

There is so much to do in the Camden, Rockport, Rockland, Belfast, Hope and beyond area! Stephanie & Bud are happy to give you hints about where you might enjoy going for a day trip, hike or dinner, depending upon your wants and needs.

Please call us so we can be sure our apartment is right for you. We would like your stay to be the very best possible experience so that you want to return and tell your friends about 36 High St, Camden.

About Bud Summers & Stephanie Laite Lanham

Bud & Stephanie love living in Camden. Bud, an Alaska Native, is most recently from Seattle, Washington. Stephanie a Camden, Maine Native. They find themselves in Camden after a series of life circumstances. Bud & Steph traveled together in "Up with People!" during the '70's and were reintroduced by a fellow cast member. Proud parents to 5 wonderful grown sons between them, both felt Camden, and 36 High St. was where they were to set up home base. Stephanie actually visited the house during her childhood with her friend Laurie. Stephanie then living just up High Street at "The Wishing Well."

For Bud, this house was a fascinating opportunity and would be the oldest house he's ever renovated. Both agreed, inspired by the guestbook and articles that came with the house, to respectfully transform 36 High St. into a comfortable home for themselves and a welcoming place for visitors.

Why Bud Summers & Stephanie Laite Lanham chose Camden

We hope you will feel refreshed, cozy, romantic, rested and cared for as you make the apartment your private home for your stay. The apartment has been a labor of love. The goal from the very beginning was to update the area while preserving as much of the historical architecture as possible. To that end we have kept all the old wood ceiling beams, re-purposing them where possible. The old pine floor has been restored and when new pine was needed, stained to match.

All the kitchen appliances and granite counters are new. The white cabinets blend the style of the home. The bathroom has a corner sink which dates back at least 100 years having been fully restored while the tile in the shower/bath is brand new with recent guests having exclaimed, "the shower is amazing!" We installed a new hot water tank in the apartment, electrical and Direct TV in the common room. The heat pump provides heat in the winter and A/C in the spring and summer.

What makes this apartment unique

We are very close to town! If you have reservations at a local restaurant, a conference or anything going on in town you can walk and not worry about your car in town.

Our backyard is lovely; nearly an acre of manicured lawn and gardens nestled under Mt Battie, bordered by a historic stone wall built in the mid 1700's.

The lawn has been utilized by owners, past and present, for weddings and other celebrations, at times under a spacious tent. Excellent, experienced local caterers can be contacted for possible events at this location. Advance notice needed.

Awesome

We absolutely loved this property. Though the apartment is connected to the main house, it was very private with its own entrance. We loved the history that was shown throughout with the use of the old beams and floors. The dining table was made of the old wood and some of the old nails and newspaper articles were placed under the glass top to peruse. Stephanie kept us appraised by e-mail of programs going on in town and we found plenty to do in the three weeks we were in Camden.

The BEST in CAMDEN

  • 5 of 5

Before, I talk about the place, I want to say that the owners are beyond fantastic. Their desire is for you to feel comfortable and welcomed, they are wonderful people, you will be in good hands.

Now about the place, it is AMAZING! As pretty the posted pictures are, it is even more in reality. It is a combination of beautiful architectural history and modern interior. You will be walking on 200 year old wooden floors in a full equipped modern kitchen with stainless steel everything, it is just FANTASTIC. The apt has a great open flow about it. Its very cosy and has plenty of natural light. It is VERY CLEAN. It is a 5 minute walk to downtown, which is a very heartwarming place, the people are very kind. It is a couple of minutes to the marina, and barely 3 minutes away from Mt Battie. Plenty of things to do around and in near by cities, it is only an hour and half drive to Acadia National Park, and the drive is full of beautiful scenery. Don't miss this one!

Lovely property, lovely town

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful and tastefully appointed property in a great position. Short walk to town with shops, restaurants etc, easy run up and down the coast too. Apartment is brilliant, fabulous kitchen in particular but everything you could need for a peaceful and private stay in Camden. Didn't see much of Bud and Stephanie (owners) as they were away on family business but very warm and welcoming when we did. Very highly recommended.

Maine Coast’s Finest

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I just arrived home after a quick 4 day escape to Camden Maine feeling relaxed and refreshed, and this is partially due to the special place we called home for our journey. Bud and Stephanie have created a delightful apartment as part of their historic 200+ year old home – it is wonderfully renovated, tastefully decorated, and a perfect walking distance to downtown Camden. The touches of modern elegance, intertwined with the historical renovations, allow you to relax in comfort and wonderment about all the history that has come before. If only those 200 year old beautifully refinished floor boards could tell stories…

Camden is a special place; it is made more special with accommodations like 36 High Street.

Perfect, Quintessential New England Beauty

  • 5 of 5

Wow! Bud and Stephanie are currently in the process of renovating their classic colonial home. We stayed in the AMAZING, newly-renovated apartment upstairs that has it's own living room, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, laundry, and even a separate entrance. The apartment is tastefully decorated and has unique touches that made my girlfriend and I feel right at home.

Bud and Stephanie were perfect hosts and opened the rest of their home to us along with making some fantastic recommendations for spots to visit in and around Camden (all within walking distance!). The hosts clearly care immensely for their property and you can see the love and care in every nook and cranny of their home.

We will absolutely be back for another visit later this summer.

A Dream Vacation Home

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I recently spent a beautiful, enchanting week in this spectacular (new refurnished!) apartment. The care and detail that Bud and Stephanie have taken into transforming their vacation rental is evident from the pictures. What isn't translatable is the warmth, calm, and peace you feel the second you walk through the door. I've been all over the state of Maine, and I truly believe that Camden is the most beautiful spot (maybe in the whole country!). In such a beautiful place, this rental is the one I'll be choosing to return to again and again. You're right in the thick of the calm here, easy walking distance to the Main St. Everything you could want or need has been provided. We couldn't have been happier. Absolutely no complaints. If you're looking for a remarkable experience, a romantic getaway for the ages, then I'd highly recommend this rental.
