About the property

On 2015 Historic Homes Tour / 3 Bedrooms - 2 Bath / 100% Renovation in 2014

This cottage was built in 1887 and will take you back in time to a bygone era but with all of the modern amenities that will keep you comfortable and feeling pampered. The home was completely renovated in 2014 and is on the Galveston Historical Homes tour the first two weekends in May 2015.

The location of the cottage is ideal since it is situated in the heart of the East End Historical District near downtown, The Strand, and the beach. Within a short walking distance (2-3 blocks) are a bakery, a boutique, a barber shop, an antique shop, an art gallery, a small park, and several very good restaurants, including The Mosquito, The Sunflower Cafe, and The Original Mexican Restaurant. A little farther away (8-10 blocks) is downtown and The Strand where you have many more options for shopping, galleries, coffee shops, bars, and restaurants. The beach is also a short drive or walk away (11 blocks) or you can jump on a bicycle and enjoy much of the island's Victorian architecture along the way.

One of the most attractive features of the home is the master suite upstairs. The suite takes up the entire second floor and includes a sitting area with a beverage refrigerator and coffee nook. There is a private bathroom with marble floors and an old-fashioned clawfoot tub with a hand-held shower head to lounge in while you take a relaxing bath. You can watch television while laying in bed or sit at the desk and write postcards to your family and friends or surf the internet on your computer. A walk-in closet is large enough to keep your clothes and luggage organized and out of the way. There is a washer and dryer in case you need to do some laundry during your stay. This suite is cozy and comfortable and makes you feel like you have gotten away from it all.

The downstairs part of the home has its own charm and is equally comfortable. You can relax in the front parlor and marvel at the incredible photography of Paul Nashke, who was a former owner of the home and a highly regarded photographer in the late 1800s and early 1900s. You can also watch your favorite shows, listen to music via Pandora, or watch movies on Netflix on the 65-inch smart television. The front bedroom is located just off the parlor and is noteworthy for its beautiful furniture, which includes an antique loveseat, and its luxurious feel. A few of Mr. Naschke's photos are showcased in this room, as well. The back bedroom features unique distressed walls that give it an artsy flair while maintaining its overall Victorian demeanor. A television and DVD player sit on top of an antique French Victorian chest.

The fully stocked kitchen, along with granite counter tops and all stainless steel appliances, will appeal to the cooks in your group. The kitchen opens up to an elegant dining room with an antique French side table that can be used as a buffet for dinner with your family and friends. The side table also contains games and a bluetooth speaker so you can enjoy music from your iPhone, Android or other device. The downstairs bathroom also has marble floors and a clawfoot tub, this time with a stand-up shower.

While you are taking a break from all of Galveston's activities and attractions, we invite you to relax on one of the benches located on the front yard brick patio overlooking Darragh Park. You can also sit on the side porch while enjoying your morning coffee. Stay tuned for improvements to the backyard to include a deck with barbecue and outdoor eating areas.

Rates may be higher during holidays and special event weekends, which require a 3-night minimum stay.

Why Damon Landry chose Galveston

We love Galveston and found ourselves visiting 2-3 times a year and renting an historical home. While riding bikes during one our visits, we happened across this home for sale, and after peeking in the windows, we fell in love instantly. Although we had not been planning to purchase another property, we could not resist this charming home with the white picket fence and wood carving of a hermit crab in the front yard. Damon grew up in an historical home on the island, and it brought back fond memories of his childhood. When we learned more about the home, especially that it had been completely renovated in 2014, we knew it was the home for us since we lived in another city and could not spend any time renovating it ourselves.

What makes this house unique

In addition to the obvious charm of the cottage, another reason we fell in love with this home is because of its history. The home was owned by a well known photographer of the time, Paul Naschke, who lived in the house for 34 years from the late 1800s through the early 1900s. The home was initially built by his father to be a rental cottage. Mr. Naschke was best known for his photographs of the Great Storm in 1900 and of Mardi Gras balls and debutantes. Some of his work is displayed in the home for you to enjoy. His work is also available for viewing at the Rosenberg Library in Galveston and in Austin at the University of Texas Harry Ransom Library.

A Refuge in Unprecedented Wet Dickens on Strand

  • 5 of 5

The Paul Nashke Home was a beautiful refuge when our group was in Galveston for Dickens on the Strand. The living areas were fantastic and well maintained. All of the amenities were top notch. The house was easily the best part of our Dickens on the Strand weekend.

We totally enjoyed our stay and would definitely come back!

A suggestion - the gravel to the back door only extends part of the way. To prevent overly wet feet, extending the gravel to the stairs would be great.

Great historic home!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time to stay here. Damon (owner) is always a pleasure to deal with. The house was cooled and ready for our arrival. Our group consists of three couples attending the Lone Star Rally. The house is located in a beautiful, quiet neighborhood. It is a short distance from the Strand and a straight shot to the Seawall. There are neighborhood restaurants located within walking distance. The house is impeccably clean with a great historic feel. The décor is well thought out and adds to the historic ambiance. We found the books and pictorial art related to Galveston and this historic Nitsche home to be very interesting. We prepared several meals in the well appointed kitchen and enjoyed them at the dining room table for six. Two of us enjoyed the quiet privacy in the large upstairs bedroom which has a sitting area and large private bath. Cruise ships can be seen from the window while relaxing in the claw foot bath tub. Our guests stayed downstairs in the beautifully furnished master bedroom and in the rear bedroom which has a clean rustic appeal. Quality towels and linens were provided. The washer and dryer allow for less clothes/baggage. The front courtyard is a great place to relax and talk to friendly neighbors as they walk by. You will not be disappointed with this house. I have already booked the home again for next year's rally.

Exceeded All Expectations

  • 5 of 5

Lovely home with all modern conveniences yet still managed to retain old world charm. From the multiple large televisions to the well-apportioned kitchen, the owners thought of everything to make us comfortable. Our group consisted of four adults and two small children, and every one of us loved it!

There are many ways to enjoy Galveston during your stay. For families, we recommend Pleasure Pier, Moody Gardens, and Schlitterbahn. Art enthusiasts will enjoy the many galleries downtown, as well as The Grand Opera House. For history buffs, The Moody Mansion and Bishop's Palace provide excellent tours or ride on a segway to hear about Galveston's rich and sometimes notorious past. A guided bay or deep sea fishing trip is another fun way to enjoy the outdoors in Galveston.
