Charming Cottage Featured In The 2015 Historic Homes Tour """

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

On 2015 Historic Homes Tour / 3 Bedrooms - 2 Bath / 100% Renovation in 2014

This cottage was built in 1887 and will take you back in time to a bygone era but with all of the modern amenities that will keep you comfortable and feeling pampered. The home was completely renovated in 2014 and was on the Galveston Historical Homes tour in May 2015. We landscaped the backyard in spring 2017 and added a Tesla charger.

The location of the cottage is ideal since it is situated in the heart of the East End Historical District near downtown, The Strand, and the beach. Within a short walking distance (2-3 blocks) are a bakery, a boutique, a barber shop, an antique shop, an art gallery, a small park, and several very good restaurants, including The Mosquito, The Sunflower Cafe, and The Original Mexican Restaurant. A little farther away (8-10 blocks) is downtown and The Strand where you have many more options for shopping, galleries, coffee shops, bars, and restaurants. The beach is also a short drive or walk away (11 blocks) or you can jump on a bicycle and enjoy much of the island's Victorian architecture along the way.

One of the most attractive features of the home is the master suite upstairs. The suite takes up the entire second floor and includes a sitting area with a coffee nook. There is a private bathroom with marble floors and an old-fashioned clawfoot tub with a hand-held shower head to lounge in while you take a relaxing bath. You can watch television while laying in bed or sit at the desk and write postcards to your family and friends or surf the internet on your computer. A walk-in closet is large enough to keep your clothes and luggage organized and out of the way. There is a washer and dryer in case you need to do some laundry during your stay. This suite is cozy and comfortable and makes you feel like you have gotten away from it all.

The downstairs part of the home has its own charm and is equally comfortable. You can relax in the front parlor and marvel at the incredible photography of Paul Naschke, who was a former owner of the home and a highly regarded photographer in the late 1800s and early 1900s. You can also watch your favorite shows or watch movies on the 65-inch smart television. The front bedroom is located just off the parlor and is noteworthy for its beautiful furniture, which includes an antique loveseat, and its luxurious feel. A few of Mr. Naschke's photos are showcased in this room, as well. The back bedroom features unique distressed walls that give it an artsy flair while maintaining its overall Victorian demeanor. A television and DVD player sit on top of an antique French Victorian chest.

The fully stocked kitchen, along with granite counter tops and all stainless steel appliances, will appeal to the cooks in your group. The kitchen opens up to an elegant dining room with an antique French side table that can be used as a buffet for dinner with your family and friends. The side table also contains games and a bluetooth speaker so you can enjoy music from your iPhone, Android or other device. The downstairs bathroom also has marble floors and a clawfoot tub, this time with a stand-up shower.

While you are taking a break from all of Galveston's activities and attractions, we invite you to relax on one of the benches located on the front yard brick patio overlooking Darragh Park. You can also sit on the side porch while enjoying your morning coffee. Stay tuned for improvements to the backyard.

Rates may be higher during holidays and special event weekends, which require a 3-night minimum stay.

About Damon and Robin

Damon and Robin live in Austin, Texas. Damon is a graphic designer and owns a

sign company. Robin is a neuropsychologist and works for a contract research organization. In their free time, they enjoy traveling, outdoor activities, and playing with their two dogs, Sasha and Little Richard.

Damon and Robin purchased this house in 2014

Why Damon and Robin chose East End Historic District

We love Galveston and found ourselves visiting 2-3 times a year and renting an historical home. While riding bikes during one our visits, we happened across this home for sale, and after peeking in the windows, we fell in love instantly. Although we had not been planning to purchase another property, we could not resist this charming home with the white picket fence and wood carving of a hermit crab in the front yard. Damon grew up in an historical home on the island, and it brought back fond memories of his childhood. When we learned more about the home, especially that it had been completely renovated in 2014, we knew it was the home for us since we lived in another city and could not spend any time renovating it ourselves.

What makes this house unique

In addition to the obvious charm of the cottage, another reason we fell in love with this home is because of its history. The home was owned by a well known photographer of the time, Paul Naschke, who lived in the house for 34 years from the late 1800s through the early 1900s. The home was initially built by his father to be a rental cottage. Mr. Naschke was best known for his photographs of the Great Storm in 1900 and of Mardi Gras balls and debutantes. Some of his work is displayed in the home for you to enjoy. His work is also available for viewing at the Rosenberg Library in Galveston and in Austin at the University of Texas Harry Ransom Library.

Lovely Historic Home in a Wonderful Neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

We very much enjoyed our stay in the Paul Naschke Historic Home, and hosts Damon and Robin were always available to answer our questions. This beautiful home provided the quiet and comfort we look for when choosing to stay somewhere. Every room in this home has its own character. The bed was very comfortable, and the bath towels very plush and soft. We used the modern kitchen for our meals and ate them in the large dining room. We enjoyed viewing the photography of Paul Naschke hanging in some of the rooms. The beautifully landscaped backyard will have to wait for another visit, as Galveston was having a cold snap when we visited. There were still plenty of things we found to do in Galveston, despite the cold. We visited Moody Gardens, the Rosenberg Library and visited many of the great shops Galveston has to offer. Thank you Damon and Robin for allowing us to stay in your home!

  • 4 of 5

The home was beautiful and nicely renovated! Good restaurants within walking distance. Rented bikes and were able to see more of the island. Neighbors were fun and friendly. Only things missing were a cutting board and hair dryer. Owners were GREAT in responding to my emails and questions. Books about Galveston in the house a real plus! Used one for a self guided walking tour! Games in the house a lot of fun! Towels and linens were very high quality! We had a wonerdful girls weekend and I would recommend the home to anyone! The VROB experience was great! Thanks, Damon and Robin

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words, Catherine - we are so glad you enjoyed your stay. I wanted to let you know that we have replaced the cutting boards... not sure what happened to them, but thanks for letting us know that they were missing. Best Regards, Robin and Damon

There are many ways to enjoy Galveston during your stay. For families, we recommend Pleasure Pier, Moody Gardens, and Schlitterbahn. Art enthusiasts will enjoy the many galleries downtown, as well as The Grand Opera House. For history buffs, The Moody Mansion and Bishop's Palace provide excellent tours or ride on a segway to hear about Galveston's rich and sometimes notorious past. A guided bay or deep sea fishing trip is another fun way to enjoy the outdoors in Galveston.
