About Miles H Barber

I have been an entrepreneur in Silicon Valley for 40 years, founding or being a part of several companies. My wife Linda and I love Maui and were fortunate to find the perfect home in the perfect location. Since we do not spend all of our time on Maui, it just seemed right to share this beautiful spot with others who love the water, temperate, climate and Magic of Maui.

Linda and I continue to live full time in Silicon Valley and love to travel. Going to Maui is always fun. Even after being there for weeks, we have never felt like it was time to leave.

In my "retirement" I publish the Santa Clara Weekly newspaper, our city's official newspaper. It is always exciting with so much going on in Santa Clara.

We are both involved in numerous non-profit organizations that are richly rewarding and personally fulfilling.

Our two daughters have been successful in their adult lives; the oldest is in house General Council for a large metropolitan transit district and our youngest is Commincations Director for a Silicon Valley high tech company with thousands of employees.

The youngest and her husband have given us two grandsons that are a delight.

If you like a true taste of Hawaii rather than the white plaster walls and hotel room living, our home may be a perfect fit. We are on a gated Cull D Sac and sit at the tip of a small peninsula with 180 degree unobstructed view of the ocean. During whale season, you can watch the them right off our deck. Of course there are always dozens of turtles, and occasionally Spinner Dolphins playing with the surfers. All the locals tell us the best snorkeling in Maui is right out our front door.

Why Miles H Barber chose West Maui

There are many places you can stay on Maui and there are only a few that provide the Hawaii experience that enhances all of the senses. The sound of the ocean at your doorstep, the view of the islands in three directions, the turtles bobbing in the surf, feeding the eels, and snorkeling with amazing tropical fish; it just creates memories to last a life time.

What makes this estate unique

Once you enter through our giant Koa wood front door, you may not want to leave. You will be treated to fabulous sights and sounds that remind you why you chose Maui and our home.

There will be the sound of surf breaking on the rocks and feel and smell of salt air mixing with the Maui breeze.

The vaulted ceilings in every room show off the craftsmanship of Hawaiian Koa wood, red eucalyptus and seasoned cedar that showcases this Hawaiian Pole house. It will beckon you to take off your shoes, pull up a deck chair and enjoy your favorite libation as you take in the beauty of Papaua Paradise.

The hot tub is large enough for 6 to 8 and the sauna will seat four nicely. We keep the kitchen stocked with basics including spices, however, if you have a special dish you wish to make you may wish to pick up those particular ingredients. The market is only 2 minutes from the house. We have three great beaches within 5 minutes. NAPILI BEACH IS PROBABLY THE MOST FAMOUS and great for kids or adults. We also provide a variety of snorkel equipment or you can rent the hi-tech type at Snokel Bob's about three minutes next door.

First trip to Maui for almost every family member, gathering for oldest son's wedding on Island, we found the house to be absolutely perfect. Snorkling was the highlight every day, and sunsets topped any other location on island. We will definately be back! Hettermann/Scagliarini families

Old rustic charm on Napili shores

  • 4 of 5

So as we arrived entry was easy into the house. The wood was a nice sight and the charm of the house was very tropical. Now I must say that there is no ac in the house and should be marketed as it not having it. For the price of the house with no ac is hard in the middle of the day. You need to have all windows open all day and all night. There's fans in each room but does not combat the humidity. The kitchen area really gets hot when cooking as there's no ventilation or fan in the kitchen area. There's some ware in tare around the outside of the house as the wood seems to be gettin eatin up by algae of some sort. Like I said it's a charming house and for a last minute trip to Maui for ten days we all made due. Other than that the location is great. Best located house in cup de sac for sure. There are tide pools in your backyard which you can feed the eels, best time is night with green or red lights. On the right side is a flat rock that leads to a bay where some of the best snorkeling I've ever done is located. Swim with 5-10 turtles at all times. Napili each is a 5 min walk. Kaanapali beach is less than a 10 min drive and Safeway is also 10 mins away. There was ample supple of snorkeling equipment and floaties. We left our full head snorkel equipment and a lot of floaties we bought so the next person will be stocked. Miles did the best job at accommodating our last minute trip. Thanks miles I would def recommend this house it remember no ac.

Fantastic... 50th Anniversary Celebration

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at 18 Papauna Place was terrific, it met all our needs for a large family gathering. Our entire family has great memory's of our stay that will last us a life time. Everyone was a little saddened that our 2 week stay was over and we had to return home.

The ever changing views of the ocean with the morning sunrise, to the blue seas during the day, surprise rainbows that showed up all times of the day, and the ever changing sunsets provided a very enjoyable and relaxing time. The access to the ocean was easily discovered and everyone went swimming most everyday. Depending on the time of day and the tides we sometimes saw more than a dozen sea turtles swimming in the cove. After a few snorkeling swims we found where the turtle hide and rest under water. The large number of small fish seen in the corral and rocks just added to the enjoyment of each swim.

The house had all the amenities needed to cook all our meals without every having to leave the house. The house is not air conditioned, which is common to most houses in Hawaii. With the open air style of the house a ocean breeze would come into the house most all day. This caused us to spent most of the days outside exploring the tide pools and the surrounding beaches instead of trying to say cooled in a AC house.

The minor issues that we had with the house were taken care quickly by the house manager. The BBQ needed some attention.

The house vacuum cleaners were over worked and needed some attention, several electric plug sockets were found worn, and the iron wouldn't power up in some wall sockets. Who needs to iron a shirt when you are on vacation?

We tried to have breakfast at the Gazebo, but their success has made them poplar with many others. The morning wait was 1-2 hrs. We had a very nice dinner at the Pineapple Grill before we bid farewell. With a short drive or walk to the Napili Market all the essentials could be obtained.

The welcome basket of fruits and goody's was enjoyed by everyone, and the bottle of wine made a great addition to our dinner on the deck one evening.

Thanks again for making your house available to us for a memorable 50th anniversary celebration. We also celebrated our oldest son's 20th anniversary and his birthday during our stay.

Amazing location and home

  • 4 of 5

The reviews of this home were spot on with the tide pool and cove just steps from the back door. I think it deserves 4.5 stars but could not make that happen. The reasoning is the "toys" in storage were a disappointment, we did not have gas in the tank for the grill (must drive to Lahaina to exchange), and maintenance men came two days, with no water most of one day which would not had been an issue except we were trying to get ready to go out to dinner after a dive trip. Bring your binoculars if it is whale season as it is front row entertainment! The ones at the home were well used. I should also note that the stairs and stair rail are winding and loose; not safe for little ones. The house and location are a different story! The doors on both levels slide open to enjoy the breeze and the view is unbelievable. The amenities inside were spot on and the wood work beautiful if you are into that. We counted 6 different eels in the tidal pools, as well as shrimp, crabs, and sea urchins. (There is a one flipper turtle in the cover with several others.) It is a bit of a challenge to get into the cove as the rocks are sharp and the waves will push one into the rocks; flippers a must. The boogie boards (2) came in handy. As noted by others, the driveway lane is very narrow and shared and impossible if one is coming in and someone or delivery/maintenance going out . The parking as described is comfortable with two cars and very tight with three. Otherwise a beautiful, quiet, secluded gem.

Great family reunion house

  • 5 of 5

We had a family gathering with 4 generations over New Years. With the abundance of hardwood and big open aired sliding glass wall, you get an immediate feeling you are in a genuine Hawaiian experience. Everything was very private, spacious and open. Kitchen was well stocked. The view from the Lanai never let us down. We saw lots of whales, turtles & surfers. The angle of the deck allowed nice sunset views without the afternoon glare off the water. There was easy access into the bay for snorkeling & surfing (surfing this break is for intermediate surfers, beginners should go south of Lahaina). Easy walk to the beach just North of the house. (The north end of the beach is safe for younger kids & the middle part is perfect for older kids to ride their boogie boards). The local Napili Market is convenient, but pricey. (Larger purchases should be done at Cosco or Safeway)

Fantastic, beautiful family home with great privacy

  • 5 of 5

Our three generations gathered here for a family vacation for a week. It was the perfect house in many ways--good private spaces indoors and out, and good communal spaces for sitting on the deck, watching tv, playing pool, soaking in large hot tub, etc. When Maui is crowded, you arrive at your house and draw a deep breath, as the only things you see are water, rocks, Molokai island, and the occasional surfer. Extremely quiet since you are at the end of a point. Known but little frequented surf break in front to the left of the house, snorkeling with turtles and colorful fish directly to the right. Extremely well equipped--especially kitchen, and sports equipment. The house and yard are mostly very well-maintained (the owner quickly attended to any problems), and very clean. Parking is tight for three cars but doable, the decor is thankfully not glitzy, but very attractive and comfortable. We did have to move a table in from the deck for our occasional large group dinners, but lots of chairs, so wasn't a problem. Very close (driving) to stores and lots of beaches if you want sand. (Walking was tougher with little kids as narrow roads and some traffic.) Comfortable beds and good bathrooms. We would definitely rent here again if we were lucky enough to go back.

Nearest Airport
31 Miles
Nearest Beach
300 Metres
Car: necessary

Our home is located between Kahana and Kapalua. About a 2 minute drive to the Bay Course Golf Shop at Kapalua and 8 minutes to Roy's of Hawaii. The Ritz Carlton Hotel is also nice for dining and is about a four minute drive and next to the Ritz is SanSei the best Japanese restaurant on Maui. Sunset sailing events take place every night from Kaanapali, about 8 minutes by car. It is about 12 minutes to Lahaina with shops, theatre, restaurants and sport bars.

The nearest store is Napili Market about a 5 minute walk or a 1 minute drive.

Other Activities: Maui is a golfer's paradise with 15 courses.

All beaches on Maui are public and many are within 5 minutes of the house including Napili Beach which is right next door and voted the 'Best Beach' in America 3 times in the last ten years. Just beyond Napili Beach is Kapalua Beach also with easy access and lots of parking,

The best snorkeling on Maui is right off our front yard. Easy access to the water where you can swim with the turtles in Honokeana Bay.

Golf: Within 10 minutes of the house are four courses including the Plantation at Kapalua, home of the PGA Major and the Bay Course at Kapalua (about 2 minutes from our front door).

Royal Kaanapali is a challenge for even the best of golfers and Kaanapali Kai is shorter yet is a tough test of golf with only the wind, sand, water, trees and greens to worry about.
