The name “Oltrarno” literally means “beyond the Arno”, and this district, which stretches along the south bank of the river, represents the true character of Florence and in general is quieter, greener and more relaxed than the other districts of Florence so that many tourists tend to choose the Oltrarno area for this reasons.
Locals still live and work in this area and have not given it over completely to generic chain shops and hotels as some of the other area of the center have slowly done. Traditionally an artisans’ quarter, the Oltrarno still boasts many lovely antique shops and artisans’ studios (especially furniture and leather-workers) and Via Maggio remains the focus of Florence’s thriving antiques trade. In many little squares and streets of this area the traditional daily life can still be seen more easily than elsewhere in the city. Monuments, museums, churches, palaces, parks: Pitti Palace, the Ponte Vecchio, Santo Spirito Square, the Gardens of Boboli - as well as Yoga studios, bookstores with restaurant, cafés, music venues, jazz shops, art galleries and the best restaurants in town for quality price ratio make the Oltrarno the trendiest district of Florence.

My name is Gaia. I am an economist but have worked in movies as production secretary and script critic, and currently for a museums' photo agency so I often deal with Florence's art. I am fluent in English and French, and speak a little Spanish. I am married with a photographer and chef, and we have a 10 years old daughter. I grew up in Rome and have briefly lived in France - and in Florence since 1997. I love meeting people from other cultures. Owner purchased this Apartment in 2014
Why Owner chose Santo Spirito
I wanted a safe, quiet, comfortable, clean, and fully-functional flat as a future home for my daughter in the Oltrarno, which is my favourite district. Oltrarno preserved until today a truly Florentine atmosphere made of art and artisans, squares where people meet and live together, shops and unique workshops, cafes and restaurants, world-famous and lesser-known museums and monuments - and a way of life you cannot find in other quarters of Florence.
What makes this Apartment unique
What I especially liked besides the ideal location allowing you to walk to the main attraction points, is the twin beds mezzanine, the kitchen internal window openind onto the adjacent dining area, the two bathrooms, the high ceilings and the quietness of the loft.

Lovely apartment, in Fabulous Florence
We had a fabulous stay. From the moment I made contact with the 1st booking to the departing of the apartment at the end of our stay everything was great. Very nice apartment, with a lift for luggage, and plenty of room and extremely quite in the evenings. There were great places to dine, lovely shops close by, and a fabulous gelato place right on the corner. We will be back again for our next trip to Florence.
This apartment worked very well for our family of 4 (2 kids - 10 and 13). It was clean and spacious (one minor exception - cover on couch is a bit grubby, but it's white, so hard to avoid!). Beds were very comfortable. Very central location - easy 15-min walk to Duomo -
less than 10 min to Ponte Vecchio. Lots of restaurants nearby as well as grocery stores. Also 2 good gelati places very close by. Cristina and Gaia were great - very responsive and helpful in arranging transport to airport. Cristina was very warm and welcoming. And was very nice to have a bottle of wine waiting for us.
Very comfortable apartment in a great location
We had a very pleasant stay in Gaia's apartment. It is well appointed with everything you could want for a comfortable stay. It is well located with a small supermarket and good selection of restaurants within a few minute's walk and within 15 minutes you can reach many of the wonderful places of interest in Florence. Gaia was very helpful by allowing us to leave our luggage at the apartment until the early afternoon on our last day.
Quiet, comfortable loft in a fantastic neighborhood.
This was a wonderful apartment for our stay in Firenze. It's comfortable, inviting, and within easy walking distance of tourist attractions and excellent restaurants. The building is charming and very quiet at night. We would happily stay here again.
We really enjoyed staying here. It was very quiet, the kitchen is well equipped and the beds were very comfortable. We could walk to many attractions, restaurants and a fantastic gelato shop! Gaia and Cristina were very helpful throughout our stay.
Thanks Linda and Diane , it was great to meet you! Hope to see you back
A true Home away from Home!!
We just returned from a 19 day stay at this property and loved every minute of it. We were greeted, right on time, by Christina, who helps to manage the property, and lives in the building, too-very convenient if you have questions. Gaia, the owner is lovely and from day one, responded to our inquiries within the same day. We were able to communicate via text to both when we had questions about where to go and what to eat from the locals. Since we were staying for quite a while, we were able to get a real feel of Florence and the Oltrarno neighborhood. The location is excellent since it is only a 10 minute walk to the big sites ( Uffizi, Duomo, Ponte Vecchio) but at the same time away from the crazy tourist scene. The street that the apt is located on is very busy, however, we never heard a thing once inside. The inside is tastefully and cheerfully decorated with original oil paintings. The ceiling is high, with the loft access and there are two sets of large windows to give lots of light. The loft has two twin beds and a closet which we did not use, but would be great for kids. As usual with a loft, the ceiling is sloped, which does not give much standing room, but we did not need it.The One and a half Bathroom set up worked well for us. Just one shower, but that was all we needed. The Master bedroom was average size but the bed, a King size, was very comfortable. The Oltrarno neighborhood is home to many locals which makes it authentic. There are several clothing boutiques, Vintage clothing stores and several Home Accessory stores that have one of a kind items. There are also Artisans that are actually working on their items including a Wood working store .There is a chain grocery store and a Pharmacy and ATM one block away. This was the best VRBO we have had and consider ourselves fortunate to have met Gaia and Christina and hope to return.
Thanks for taking the time to share your experience and appreciation of your stay. It was a pleasure to host you guys and I reciprocally consider myself fortunate you chose my flat. Hope to see you again in Italy soon.
