About Lucinda Scalco

I am a native San Diegan. We purchased this property 9 years ago because we love the location. My husband and I plan to live there in 10 years. The neighborhood is now a Mecca for fine dining with lots of hip new restaurants, funky old restaurants, breweries and bars . I like to garden, go on bike rides, and have friends over for nice dinners. I am an interior designer and had a lot of fun putting the interior together. It's comfortable, cheerful, and romantic .

Lucinda Scalco purchased this bungalow in 2009

Why Lucinda Scalco chose Bankers Hill

To be honest, if I was coming to San Diego for beaches only, I'd rent a place right on the beach. However if you're here for some beach, but the zoo, downtown, Little Italy, Old Town, Balboa Park, Coronado, then this location is unsurpassed. Who wants to spend all your time in a car? Literally you can walk 4-8 blocks and get to great restaurants, the park, downtown and the harbor. If you want to stay in, the place is very comfy, nice bay breezes, good light. Most of my guests say the airplanes add an element of excitement, noticeable the first day and after that forgotten. Not to mention when you fly in, its less than a 10 minute ride to the house.

What makes this bungalow unique

I'd say the fact that it is a single family dwelling in mid city makes it more unique. Then add the Mexican flavor decor which puts you in the mood for San Diego's ethnic roots. The airplanes add to the excitement of travel. It is almost 100 years old but has the comfort of your favorite old shoes. Sometimes parking is more challenging but the garage guarantees you a spot each and every time. And you can have a successful car free visit to San Diego in this location as well. Uber rides to downtown are $5 and walking is 15 minutes. The city bus has a stop right across the street and the trolley and train are also walking distance away.

Car: recommended

This house is centrally located to restaurants, museums, airport, park, marina, great restaurants, downtown. It is about 10-15 minutes to Coronado or mission beach. It is three blocks away from interstate 5. San Diego is a hard city to not have a car in but this location would offer a lot even without a car. No walk is very long except for the beach. The Gaslamp and ballpark are about a mile and a half away. The Horton plaza mall is about a mile away with movie theaters there. A walk through Balboa Park puts the zoo and the museums about a mile and a half away. The bay and embarcadero are less than a mile away. There is a city bike sharing program in which you can rent bikes with a credit card and drop them off at many convenient locations. The bike kiosk is just 3 blocks from the house at the corner of hawthorn and 4 th ave.

Very enjoyable

  • 5 of 5

Four of us loved staying at Lucinda’s Casita. The cottage is very comfortable for four people, colorful and cheery, just like the photographs. Master bed very soft, which my husband and I enjoyed, second bed much firmer, per my cousin, who would have liked it a little softer, but not a problem. We enjoyed the planes going over, and with windows and doors shut you could barely hear them, just a quick whoosh and they were gone. Cottage very central, we did loads of walking, in all directions., hardly used our car. Lucinda extremely prompt in returning our deposit and in responding to all my emails. We would definitely stay there again if we return to San Diego. Thanks so much Lucinda.

Wish I could give it 10 stars!! The most delightful place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed in many home away rentals over the last ten years all over the country and this Casita was hands down the best! Impeccably decorated and fully stocked with attention to every thing you may need. The owner truly seems to focus on creating a wonderful experience for her guests. The location is perfect for exploring all areas of San Diego including Coronado with easy interstate access. Walking distance to essentials and quick bus trip to Gaslamp District or Uber to Old Town. We would return to San Diego JUST to stay in this adorable Casita again.

Comfortable and convenient

  • 5 of 5

This nicely decorated home was clean, cozy and contained everything we needed. The beverages and snacks provided for us when we arrived were much appreciated. This home is in a great location. We were able to walk to Little Italy and Balboa Park. Many other attractions we visited were just a short drive away. I'm glad we rented a small vehicle (Kia Forte) as it just barely fit in the garage. Street parking is available, but finding a nearby parking space in the evening can be quite a challenge. The TV has basic access, so if you are interested in watching a sporting event, it will be necessary to go to a nearby sports bar. The flight noise is generally not a problem when inside, except for a couple jets that arrive early in the morning (around 4:30 - 5:00 am). We would definitely stay here again.

Owner's Response: Im glad you enjoyed your stay however Im sorry you experienced airplane noise so early in the morning. The airport has an agreement with nearby residents to not have landings or departures between 12pm and 6 am. If they do, which is infrequent, they pay the city a $300,000 fine.

Wonderful!!

  • 5 of 5

Lucinda, your casa became our casa!! The cute bungalow was not only inviting, but comfortable and homey. We enjoyed breakfast on the patio, and relaxing after our busy day of seeing the sites in San Diego. The charm and all the color inside and out with flowers and tiles only adds to the character!! Thank you for an informative "Welcome Book" and broachers. The central location led us to walk many places, great exercise after great food! To tell you the truth, we even enjoyed the planes flying over! It was fun to see them so close, and the noise became unnoticeable!! Thank you again, and we will refer friends your way.

A Lovely, Comfortable Casita

  • 5 of 5

We really loved Lucinda's casita. It is colorful, comfortable, and welcoming. We appreciated the amenities and the small touches. Parking is limited but we were lucky that our rental, a Jeep Compass, just did fit in the garage although passengers have to get out first. Being under the flight path really takes some getting used to. It is a great central location, but not handicapped accessible. This place is great for small families or couples. It is very lovely. Thanks for sharing.
