Overview

About the property

Merle's Room is on the second floor of our antique 1874 Victorian home

Our room in the Thompson House is cozy and comfortable, a simple nightly accommodation offered as an economical option.

Room has a double bed and a twin--in the same room--and a full private bath with tub-and-shower combination, making it an excellent option for one couple or a couple with one child.

Linens are provided, and the room has a dorm-size refrigerator for keeping a few things cold. This listing does not include a kitchen or a coffeepot, but Reilly's Store is an excellent grocery store just up the hill that is open every day. Coffee and morning pastries are available there.

There is no television in the room, and free Wi-Fi is available on the property but not in the room. Cell phones work only sporadically in our area, but we can advise where to get the best reception and we do have a land line for guests' use.

In the back of the house we have an extensive library with books, puzzles, and games, including a section for children.

The Thompson House is a few minutes' walk to Back Cove, a wonderful place to use our rowboats and explore marine life, and a few more minutes' walk to our stunning open Atlantic property, which is offered for all to enjoy.

Note: We do not have a night desk, so this room is available only for arrivals before 7 pm.

About Merle and Karen Thompson

Merle has lived in New Harbor his whole life, and Karen has been here for 35 years. Karen grew up in the Boston area and was a guest at Thompson Cottages since she was a baby. New Harbor is our year-round home.

Merle's Room was indeed Merle's bedroom when he grew up in this home.

Merle and Karen Thompson purchased this guest house in 2000

Why Merle and Karen Thompson chose Mid-Coast & Islands

Our family has owned this property since 1920 and we, the third generation to own it, have been its stewards since 2000. The property is a treasure to us and our family, and we care for everything with great attention to detail and love. We live here year-round, and we enjoy having our guests return year after year to a place that comes to mean a great deal to them, too. We are always excited to have new guests and to see them enjoy the beautiful Midcoast area as much as we do.

What makes this guest house unique

Coziness, cleanliness, and peace are our hallmarks. Being responsible stewards of our beautiful unspoiled area is very important to us.

An authentic Maine vacation rental!

  • 5 of 5

My husband grew up taking vacations at these cottages and we did the same with our kids. The cottages are always clean, well kept, and comfortable with fantastic views of the cove. From our cottage, it was a quick walk down to the cove where the kids spent hours fishing, swimming, kayaking, and crabbing. Merle and Karen are excellent hosts, always available if needed and very attentive. Our summers at Back Cove are still special; even as college students my kids keep coming back, bringing all their friends!
