About Mary Baumgartner

I am an artist/designer/entrepreneur venturing into the sharing economy for the first time. I grew up in Minnesota and after 2 years in the Peace Corps I moved to San Francisco in 1987.

I love my home, the city and the surrounding areas. I'm excited to share it with others.

Mary Baumgartner purchased this house in 1994

Why Mary Baumgartner chose San Francisco

This is an oasis without being off the beaten track. The combination of the comforts of this home and the amenities of the neighborhood, along with its location in the heart of multiple compelling districts make a stay here a great choice.

What makes this house unique

This house is a piece of history that has been updated for modern living. Built before the 1906 earthquake it has great character and presence. The high ceilings and the softwood floors enhance its warmth and sense of home.

I grew up in an older home built by a Czechoslovakian builder in the midwest. For me this house is the closet thing to that original family home. It just feels right.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I can only say we were flabbergasted by how perfectly located your home

was! We even ran into a long lost friend who had recently moved to the

neighborhood! My son's place was only 7 blocks away! Your home was far

beyond what we expected...the whole trip was magical for me and the girls!

Great place, Great location!

  • 5 of 5

I spent a week at this terrific little (but spacious) house and found it a great place for both work and pleasure. There are many great shopping areas and restaurants in the immediate neighborhood and in walkable near-by neighborhoods. However, the greatest benefit may be its proximity (only 2 short blocks!) to one of the city's busiest MUNI stations. Using public transportation I could be downtown for meetings, door to door, in 20-25 minutes. Mary is a great host insuring that any issues that may come up can be dealt with quickly. I would definitely stay at this property again.

Lovely place with a great location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Mary's place while in San Fran for a conference. The place is very homely and had a nice back yard to relax in. It was easy to get to down town while also being just far enough away to avoid the hustle and bustle. We loved it!

Perfect for us

My husband and I and two adult children were in town for a wedding. Mary's Place worked out great for us. It was clean, beautifully decorated and convenient to transportation and grocery stores.

Lovely old house with alot of charm.

  • 4 of 5

Four ladies from Toronto stayed in Mary's house Sept 9-12. The house was quite spacious with everything that we needed. The pull out couch in the living room was quite comfortable, as were the other two beds. We only ate breakfast there, ate lunch and dinner out. On our last night we discovered the fabulous Thai restaurant a short walk away.

The shower was in a claw bathtub, which if you have problems with your knees, isn't too easy to get into.

We liked the quietness of the garden in the back, however it got to cold to sit out there!

A very eclectic house! Everytime you turned around there was something else to look at, a beautiful picture, interesting lamp, interesting hanging art work!

The one thing that we found exceptional was a basket of goodies that was there on our arrival. A bottle of wine, Pellegrino, and snacks.

A great place to stay.

Totally cute house in a very convenient location

  • 4 of 5

We (three of us) stayed at Mary's Place for 5 days in September. The location was so convenient with a bus stop right out front, a muni stop just down the street and the street car on Market Street too. We used all 3 methods of transportation. The one of us who slept in the front bedroom didn't find the noise of the buses on the street at all bothersome. The house is really cute and provides all you need. The bathroom is a bit small and some might find the claw foot tub/shower a bit high to get in and out of as well as not a good as a full shower but we knew to expect a bit of inconvenience in an old house and thought the character was worth it. The powder room between the 2 bedrooms was a very nice convenience to have. Having the back garden to sit in on one sunny afternoon was a treat. Mary was an amazing host - she even left treats and beverages on the dining table for guests. We really appreciated Mary's flexibility with our arrival and departure times. We totally recommend Mary's Place for a neighbourhood stay in SF!

Welcoming, clean, great outdoor space and comfy.

  • 5 of 5

I rented this apartment for my daughter and her two friends for their stay in San Francisco and they loved it! It was a graduation trip (college) and the girls LOVED the outdoor space and the warm and welcoming apartment. In addition, they received what was described as a "wicked awesome welcoming basket" ~ Mary could not have been a nicer hostess. Hoping to rebook for my next trip to the left coast!
