About Mary Baumgartner

I am an artist/designer/entrepreneur venturing into the sharing economy for the first time. I grew up in Minnesota and after 2 years in the Peace Corps I moved to San Francisco in 1987.

I love my home, the city and the surrounding areas. I'm excited to share it with others.

Mary Baumgartner purchased this house in 1994

Why Mary Baumgartner chose San Francisco

This is an oasis without being off the beaten track. The combination of the comforts of this home and the amenities of the neighborhood, along with its location in the heart of multiple compelling districts make a stay here a great choice.

What makes this house unique

This house is a piece of history that has been updated for modern living. Built before the 1906 earthquake it has great character and presence. The high ceilings and the softwood floors enhance its warmth and sense of home.

I grew up in an older home built by a Czechoslovakian builder in the midwest. For me this house is the closet thing to that original family home. It just feels right.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I can only say we were flabbergasted by how perfectly located your home

was! We even ran into a long lost friend who had recently moved to the

neighborhood! My son's place was only 7 blocks away! Your home was far

beyond what we expected...the whole trip was magical for me and the girls!

Charming house in a local neighborhood!

  • 5 of 5

We got the "local" experience we wanted. Several good cafes and restaurants in the area. Many of the local attractions were close and easy to get to. Loved the backyard garden too! Thank you Mary, me and my girls had a wonderful time.

Great Location

  • 4 of 5

Mary's house is an an excellent location. Although we didn't take public transport we saw the main line just minutes from the house as we walked to our favorite cafe Thorough Bread and Pastry. We had a car and therefore used the driveway for parking. The beds were comfortable and the furnishings fine. The basket of goodies was a nice touch. I would suggest that a shower caddy be provided for the shower because the soap and shampoo holder are behind the shower curtain and not accessible without pouring water on the floor. My daughter used the garden and it's very nice. The kitchen is okay, with older appliances that could probably be replaced. Also, we had a problem with accessing the house. Mary approved early entry for us on our arrival day and although I sent her two emails prior to our arrival, one at least a week in advance and the other several days prior, we never received a code. My husband also sent several texts the day we were leaving and upon our arrival asking for the code but none was sent. We decided to go the the house anyway and after calling and leaving several messages, Mary never answered her phone, we had to leave and drove back toward the airport and an appointment we had at Stanford later that afternoon. We were disappointed that Mary never answered her phone and only got us the code later in the afternoon.

Owner's Response: Your access snafu was so unfortunate. I did send the code early in the morning and I still see it in my text chain with you. However you apparently did not receive it. I returned your calls and left several messages but there was no answer until late in the evening. You are the only guests I've had this issue with so I don't know what else to say other than it was unfortunate that you couldn't take advantage of the early access. I was very distressed for hours that day as I left messages for you and texted to no response. I do not give the security code out prior to day of arrival as a precaution for guests who are at the house before you. I hope you enjoyed your stay in spite of this.

Nice spot to experience SF

  • 5 of 5

Mary is super easy to work with and communicates well.

This spot is within 2 blocks of several good restaurants. We ate at Cafe du Soleil, Woodhouse Fish Grill, and Chow, and got pastries at Thorough Bread.

It's also about a 15 min walk to lots of places with shops and eateries. My family and I walked to the Painted Ladies, the Castro (super duper burger is great), Haight-Ashbury, lower Haight (bi rite for ice cream, a comic shop, a game shop), and the Mission district.

There are homeless in the area, but I always felt safe.

It's a great place to experience living in SF.

Lovely, spacious & in the heart of SF

  • 5 of 5

For the nightly price of a downtown hotel room we rented Mary’s Place and lived like San Franciscans in a classic Edwardian house with original carved moldings, high ceilings, and light-filled rooms. We found this 2-bedroom home to be exactly as described: roomy, tidy and a pleasure to stay in. We loved the wonderful outdoor space in back.

Mary’s Place has a Lower Haight Street vibe – casual, eclectic, and welcoming.

There are tons of restaurants, coffee houses, and shops nearby. A huge Safeway is two blocks away, open round the clock.

San Francisco is a walking city and it’s easy to walk out the front door and start exploring neighborhoods: Duboce Triange, The Castro, Upper Haight Street, trendy Hayes Valley, The Fillmore, Japantown, and Pacific Heights. To travel further, Church Street Station’s underground Muni trains are only a few blocks away. A crosstown bus stops at the corner.

Big plus: off-street parking. We had a car and avoided hunting for a legal parking spot among the complicated system of street cleaning times, bus zones, short curbs, and neighbors-only parking restrictions.

Note: you’ll hear the sounds of the city from the front rooms, including the 22-Fillmore electric bus passing by. However, it gets quiet after 10pm.

Mary’s Place is a gem. Authentic San Francisco. Highly recommend.

Great place, Great location!

  • 5 of 5

I spent a week at this terrific little (but spacious) house and found it a great place for both work and pleasure. There are many great shopping areas and restaurants in the immediate neighborhood and in walkable near-by neighborhoods. However, the greatest benefit may be its proximity (only 2 short blocks!) to one of the city's busiest MUNI stations. Using public transportation I could be downtown for meetings, door to door, in 20-25 minutes. Mary is a great host insuring that any issues that may come up can be dealt with quickly. I would definitely stay at this property again.
