About Mary Baumgartner
I am an artist/designer/entrepreneur venturing into the sharing economy for the first time. I grew up in Minnesota and after 2 years in the Peace Corps I moved to San Francisco in 1987. I love my home, the city and the surrounding areas. I'm excited to share it with others.
Mary Baumgartner purchased this House in 1994
Why Mary Baumgartner chose Lower Haight
This is an oasis without being off the beaten track. The combination of the comforts of this home and the amenities of the neighborhood, along with its location in the heart of multiple compelling districts make a stay here a great choice.
What makes this House unique
This house is a piece of history that has been updated for modern living. Built before the 1906 earthquake it has great character and presence. The high ceilings and the softwood floors enhance its warmth and sense of home. I grew up in an older home built by a Czechoslovakian builder in the midwest. For me this house is the closet thing to that original family home. It just feels right.

My 3rd stay at Mary’s Place SF -- I keep coming back!
I felt like I was --again-- comfortably at home in fabulous San Francisco. As usual, Mary had the door code ready to go at the appointed time and inside the house was immaculate. A perfect, worry-free way to start a vacation. The weather last week was clear and warm so morning sun was pouring through the east-facing kitchen windows illuminating the entire back of the house. And every morning I ate breakfast outside in the sunny, quiet backyard garden. A huge Safeway grocery store is two blocks away. Muni Metro subway is just beyond that. SF is a wonderful city to explore by foot. And you can't beat this neighborly location: adjacent to the Haight-Ashbury and Golden Gate Park, Buena Vista (a lovely, hilly, wooded urban park), The Castro, and newly thriving Mid-Market Street which is packed with restaurants and bars.
Another great stay. Check out my other Mary’s Place SF reviews for more info you’re interested (Jan 2017, May 2017).
Thanks again, Mary. Can’t wait to return!
Charming home as promised
We enjoyed our stay very much. The home was charming and well-equipped, had a beautiful quiet courtyard/garden where sun and hummingbirds visit. Easy location to groceries and public transit. Great beds - would use again!
Beautiful back yard and garden, fun decorations, and convenient to public transportation
We had a fun time at Mary’s place. The backyard and garden was beautiful and a relaxing place to have morning coffee. We loved all of the interesting artistic touches in this home.
Public transportation, groceries and small restaurants were nearby and easy to get to.
Mary sent nicely detailed information and she responded to any questions quickly.
The snacks, drinks and wine Mary left out for us were also a really nice touch (and much appreciated).
Thank you for a fun stay!
Close to public transit, clean and nicely decorated!
Mary's house is ideally located near muni stations, grocery stores and restaurants. (Whole Foods nearby, as well as CVS and great coffee shops -- Cafe Du Soleil, for instance.) We really liked Kate's Kitchen for breakfast and ate there every morning. Since our flight was delayed and we arrived very late in the evening, we really appreciated the beverages and snacks that Mary had left for us! We had no trouble locating the house and Mary provided the code and instructions in advance. Mary's place is spacious, clean and very nicely decorated. The kitchen was well-equipped although a microwave would have been a plus. Our young boys slept on the pull-out couch. The sheets for that pull-out were not in the front bedroom closet as indicated in the instructions so we had to search around. We eventually found sheets that would fit in the bathroom linen closet. That pull-out bed was not very comfortable and sloped in the middle, but the other beds in the house were great. One of the problems that we had was with the parking space. We rented Mary's house because we were renting a car to take us to our later destinations and Mary's place had a parking space. (I had read about renters in other locations receiving parking tickets on various streets in San Fran.) Our rental car was an SUV (because we needed 4-wheel drive for National Parks post San Fran) and we got ticketed for blocking the sidewalk even though we were correctly parked in the lefthand driveway, as close as we could get to the garage door. So, if you have a car and park in the driveway, make sure you do not block the sidewalk. We then parked on the street just in front of the driveway since it was the weekend and street parking rules then changed. Unfortunately, in the middle of our last night, our rear car window was smashed even though there was nothing in the car. However, I feel this event was due in large part to San Fran's large (and often menally ill) homeless population. And, despite this very unfortunate event, we felt very safe at Mary's house and really liked the neighborhood. My advice is: do not rent a car at all and save yourself the hassle. We didn't need it. We took took public transit and Ubered most of the time. (We bought 3 day muni passes on the phone App so we didn't have to pay multiple times for the cable car.)
Thanks for the review, Maura! Your comments about the couch are duly noted - a new one is on order. Sorry about the car; the ticket and the window... that's the first ticket ever received in that driveway. Seems it was due to the length of your vehicle not allowing you to avoid blocking the sidewalk. Glad you enjoyed your stay in spite of those hassles.
Fam of 5 had a great trip to SF.
We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to SF. Marys place was great we highly recommend it!
We are a fam of 5 and were very comfortable. The location was great. Mary was very accomodating and called to make sure we had everything. We felt very safe in the neighborhood. Enjoy!
We really enjoyed our stay at Mary's beautiful home! It was very comfortable, spacious and full of charm. The location was good- easy to access the bus and a bit away from all the hustle and bustle of the city. The city sounds that we could hear, lulled my daughter to sleep in the front bedroom. The wine, drinks and snacks were also very nice!! It was quite a treat for us to stay in a San Franciscan Victorian!
