About Mary Baumgartner

I am an artist/designer/entrepreneur venturing into the sharing economy for the first time. I grew up in Minnesota and after 2 years in the Peace Corps I moved to San Francisco in 1987.

I love my home, the city and the surrounding areas. I'm excited to share it with others.

Mary Baumgartner purchased this house in 1994

Why Mary Baumgartner chose Lower Haight

This is an oasis without being off the beaten track. The combination of the comforts of this home and the amenities of the neighborhood, along with its location in the heart of multiple compelling districts make a stay here a great choice.

What makes this house unique

This house is a piece of history that has been updated for modern living. Built before the 1906 earthquake it has great character and presence. The high ceilings and the softwood floors enhance its warmth and sense of home.

I grew up in an older home built by a Czechoslovakian builder in the midwest. For me this house is the closet thing to that original family home. It just feels right.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I can only say we were flabbergasted by how perfectly located your home

was! We even ran into a long lost friend who had recently moved to the

neighborhood! My son's place was only 7 blocks away! Your home was far

beyond what we expected...the whole trip was magical for me and the girls!

Beautiful home & garden for an authentic SF experience

  • 5 of 5

My family of five highly enjoyed our stay at Mary's place. The living room, dining room, & kitchen were all surprisingly spacious, and the eclectic decor made a fun contrast with all the edwardian architectural details. The garden in the back was a wonderful reprieve from the street noise out front. The flowers were amazing - we even saw two hummingbirds! Those steps got a bit treacherous in the dark (they're on the one side of the house that wasn't well lit), but manageably so.

The location was excellent for getting fed and getting around: grocery stores, bus stops, and train line only two blocks away. The Helen Diller Playground at Mission Dolores Park was a bit of a longer walk, but fantastic for kids. And Maven on Haight St had amazing cocktails & appetizers for grownups :) I highly recommend both!

We'd stay here again in a heartbeat!

Great property and location

  • 5 of 5

Had a great stay in Mary's place. Location was fantastic, just beside a MUNI station so didn't have to use the car. Supermarkets and lots of nice cafes and restaurants close by.

Beds were very comfy and there was lots of space in the house. Loved all Mary's décor and quirky bits and pieces around the house. Would definitely stay there again if we returned to SF. There was a welcome basket waiting for us which was a lovely touch!

Thanks Mary!

great time in San Francisco

  • 5 of 5

Mary's place was as advertised. Perfect for our family of four trip, good size for all. Her kitchen had lots of room and all the condiments. The master bed was very comfortable and the location was walk-able, close to transit, and right behind shopping.

At home again in the Lower Haight

  • 5 of 5

We liked Mary's Place so much in January, we came back for another week in May. Our second stay was as lovely as the first – but with better weather. Mary was prompt with communication and the house was clean, light-filled and had everything we needed. Our days began sipping coffee in the quiet back garden, enjoying the morning sun and planning outings. Because the house is so centrally located we had great walks to the Upper Haight, Golden Gate Park, the Castro, and the Mission. We also drove to Marin and Napa so the off-street parking spot was a major convenience! As I mentioned in a previous review, San Francisco’s on-street parking is geared for residents, not visitors. We found more wonderful nearby restaurants. Check out Duboce Park Café for breakfast and carry-out lattes, and Chow Church off Market St for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Both restaurants are local and casual with excellent food.

Thanks Mary! Can’t wait to visit again.

Charming house in a local neighborhood!

  • 5 of 5

We got the "local" experience we wanted. Several good cafes and restaurants in the area. Many of the local attractions were close and easy to get to. Loved the backyard garden too! Thank you Mary, me and my girls had a wonderful time.

Great Location

  • 4 of 5

Mary's house is an an excellent location. Although we didn't take public transport we saw the main line just minutes from the house as we walked to our favorite cafe Thorough Bread and Pastry. We had a car and therefore used the driveway for parking. The beds were comfortable and the furnishings fine. The basket of goodies was a nice touch. I would suggest that a shower caddy be provided for the shower because the soap and shampoo holder are behind the shower curtain and not accessible without pouring water on the floor. My daughter used the garden and it's very nice. The kitchen is okay, with older appliances that could probably be replaced. Also, we had a problem with accessing the house. Mary approved early entry for us on our arrival day and although I sent her two emails prior to our arrival, one at least a week in advance and the other several days prior, we never received a code. My husband also sent several texts the day we were leaving and upon our arrival asking for the code but none was sent. We decided to go the the house anyway and after calling and leaving several messages, Mary never answered her phone, we had to leave and drove back toward the airport and an appointment we had at Stanford later that afternoon. We were disappointed that Mary never answered her phone and only got us the code later in the afternoon.

Owner's Response: Your access snafu was so unfortunate. I did send the code early in the morning and I still see it in my text chain with you. However you apparently did not receive it. I returned your calls and left several messages but there was no answer until late in the evening. You are the only guests I've had this issue with so I don't know what else to say other than it was unfortunate that you couldn't take advantage of the early access. I was very distressed for hours that day as I left messages for you and texted to no response. I do not give the security code out prior to day of arrival as a precaution for guests who are at the house before you. I hope you enjoyed your stay in spite of this.
