Excellent Facilities For Our Large Family Reunion

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful family reunion over July 4th week. We had 4 families meeting from NC, PA and IN There were 8 adults and 7 children (including 2 infants who slept in their pack-n-plays).

Our large family used the lower level and was perfect for them. They had privacy with a play area, sitting area and quiet for the baby to nap.

The middle floor provided for a great gathering area with the deck as a perfect overflow for reading, conversation, nature viewing and grilling. Even though our activity could get noisy the bedrooms on this floor blocked out that noise when people wanted to go to bed. The kitchen was well stocked with needed plates and utensils. We were able to fit around the table adding the stools at the corners and one folding chair.

The upper floor and 2 master bedrooms were spacious. The bedroom with the bathtub was perfect for our son with a toddler. The walk in closet was used as the toddler's sleeping area.

We had a very relaxing yet activity filled time. We checked out the Nature Foundation, took 2 extended hikes, found a geocache, used the pool, and relaxed.

Word to the wise: don't back out of the drive.

Perfect mountain getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Arbothan!! It had everything we needed for sleeping, meals, activity, and relaxation! The only time we left the house was to go take advantage of the pool access. We also enjoyed hiking the Upper Shamokin Falls Trail that we were able to access near the house.

Wonderful Mountain retreat!

  • 5 of 5

Our family met at this property for a family reunion after my niece's high school graduation. It was the perfect location for us with family members coming from NC, DC area, and PA. We were multiple generations ranging in age from 4 years old to 74 years and we all had an amazing time. I have rented A LOT of vacation homes on VRBO and this one was by far the most well-stocked, upscale kitchen (with cooking supplies) and of games, books, and DVD's. It was also very clean and well maintained. It was great having 2 fridges and microwaves and we had plenty of room to spread out with the 2 living spaces, too! We had never been to the Wintergreen resort, but found the area beautiful and very well kept. We enjoyed the hike from outside the property to a beautiful waterfall, as well as a few more that we traveled to on the resort property. We loved how the owners provided crates for our dog and even a gate on the deck so she could be outside with us without us having to worry about her running off. Michael was a pleasure to rent from, always answering our questions in a timely manner and he even called us on our first night to welcome us into our "home" for the long weekend. We will definitely rent this home again in the future. It honestly felt like the homeowners thought of everything!

Perfect!!

  • 5 of 5

It was a delight to stay at Arbothan house for a 80th birthday family celebration! The decks and layout of house made it so easy to interact - the large ping pong table and chess board were big hits. We loved the quiet atmosphere and the porch swing was perfect. Many happy memories to treasure and we would highly recommend this property. Michael was easy to contact and wanted to make our stay as pleasant as possible.

Perfect for our Get-Together

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 10 friends had a great time. The house perfectly suited our needs. Clean, great floor plan, nicely decorated, and a kitchen stocked with everything we needed. We lived mainly on the deck and in the kitchen! Michael was easy to work with. We hope to visit again!

There are abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation available in all parts of Nelson County, from the top of the weathered Blue Ridge peaks down to the wide bends of the James River. These options include: hiking along the Appalachian Trail or to the top of Crabtree Falls (the highest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River), excellent canoeing or fishing on the James or Tye Rivers, or cycling on U.S. Bicycle Route 76 or one of the many Virginia Scenic Byways. Additionally, one of the boundaries of Nelson County is milepost zero of the Blue Ridge Parkway, which closely mirrors Nelson County’s northwestern border for 30 miles.

Long established family orchards provide apples in the fall and hold fall festivals on the weekends. Other seasonal fruits available are peaches, strawberries and blackberries.

The restaurants and dining options offer a variety of foods with many offering Virginia grown products and are also locally-owned and operated. Nelson County is also home to many thriving vineyards, three craft breweries, a cider barn, and a whiskey distillery. The Brew Ridge Trail has taken the craft-brewing world by storm and has become extremely popular in Central Virginia.

Nelson County is home to Swannanoa mansion and is the location of Walton's Mountain made famous by the television show The Waltons.

Visit Staunton to see unique museums and theatres including The Frontier Culture Museum - an outdoor, living history museum with exhibits and programs that explore the diverse old world origins of the earliest immigrants, and The Blackfriars Playhouse - the world’s only re-creation of Shakespeare’s indoor theater.

Charlottesville is 1 hour’s drive away. Walking tours of downtown Charlottesville offer a deep look into early-American history. Visit the home of Thomas Jefferson at Monticello or his lasting academic legacy the University of Virginia. Dive into the history of American democracy at Montpelier, home of James and Dolley Madison - Father of the Constitution, Architect of the Bill of Rights, and America’s 1st First Lady.

The Virginia Safari Park is located in Natural Bridge. Virginia's only Drive-Thru Zoo is a unique 180-acre animal encounter park, home to over 1,000 exotic animals and where visitors are encouraged to interact with the animals by feeding them with specialty grain directly through the car windows!

Historical Richmond is a 2 hour drive away where you can enjoy museums, ghost walks, river cruises and Segway tours.

Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens are a 4 hour drive away.
