Ripple Lodge: A Family Lodge on Long Lake since 1928.

Bedrooms 9
Space 3,800 sq ft
Property type lodge
Minimum Stay 2 - 7 nights

About the property

3 Houses & 2 Cabins: 9+ Bedrooms, 5 Bathrooms, 2 Kitchens & a Beach - Sleeps 20+

Ripple Lodge is a one-of-a-kind set of four houses and two cabins - only five of which we typically rent to ONE Party in the Summer, as well as possibly renting our various spaces to multiple parties during the Spring & Fall. Being located on about one acre of beautifully wooded land on the N.E. corner of Long Lake and having over 275 feet of lake frontage and an expansive sandy beach ideal for the kids, Ripple Lodge still manages to retain its charm and atmosphere from the 1920's: the perfect spot to escape from the frantic pace and relax in comfort and seclusion, and a great place for a family reunion.

During the late Spring, Summer and early Fall - the dining house and charming white cabin are added on to the Big House, blue cabin and boat house that are available year-round. Our outdoor wood furnace (see last picture) insures that you never run out of hot water well as delivering in-floor heat to the bathrooms, and hot water baseboard heat elsewhere in the Big house & Blue Cabin.

Being central to everything the Big House also has the majority of the bedrooms(5+), & two and a half luxurious bathrooms, not to mention a large living room w/Fireplace! When you add in the other 4 buildings that makes for more than sufficient space into which large family groups fit comfortably. The porch on the West side of the Big House is a perfect spot for watching sunsets over the lake, as too are the porches on the dining house and, most particularly, the one on the boat house which is right on the water's edge.

Speaking of 'lake' - do note the clarity of Long Lake's spring-fed water, much better than many other lakes in the area! Historically a bass lake, one is more likely to enjoy walleye after spending a night trolling, though perch and other small fry are out there. The setting couldn't be better what with the sandbar, the plenitude of birds (Loons, an eagle, a crane, ducks and geese, and many smaller birds, finches), towering trees, fresh air and delicious well water (please, pretty please! - don't bring plastic water bottles!), not to mention a great view of the Milky Way - the most natural of settings - Pure Michigan: it's right here.

If you are looking for something unique, not the typical modern hoopla but charm that goes back to 1928 - and lots of space, and lots of privacy, plenty of room for kids on the beach front, a large Dining Room in the Dining house (seats 16+), etc. - Ripple Lodge is it. We are particular about to whom we rent and have a list of 'rules' that can make instant bookings impractical, moreover the price varies according to the number of adults, teenagers and kids overs 5, hence it's best to correspond about such particulars allowing me to modify the price according to your parties unique compostion.

Of course we have a Verizon WiFi hot spot, fully stocked kitchens, a dock and buoys, but bring or rent your own boat(s), the boat launch is right across the lake, about 1 mile away. There's a TV but no reception out here, so bring your favorite DVDs if you wish.

Spring, Fall and Winter offer the utmost in quiet and affordability, and you might be amazed at seeing the ice freeze around Christmas - as winter can be serene as well as brutal. Crystal Mountain Ski resort is 28 miles away offering generally impressive snow conditions. Lodging is limited to about 8 adults and 6 kids once the thermometer dives below the freezing point.

Ripple Lodge is ready and we do advise that you book far in advance, particularly if you desire a week during the Summer Peak Season. Normally the Summers are fully booked 6-12 months in advance!

About Phillip Lundberg

My wife and I bought out my cousins a few years back and have been busy fixing up 'the lodge' to make it one of the best spots on Long Lake for large family reunions. For now Ripple Lodge is a rental business as well as our home, in a little while it will only become available for repeat customers who know and appreciate its unique virtues.

Phillip Lundberg purchased this lodge in 1928

Why Phillip Lundberg chose Traverse City

The best of the old and the new - the charm from almost 100 years is still evident, along with lots of new ideas and, not to forget: a great location on the NE corner of Long Lake: Ripple Lodge - the place to be.

What makes this lodge unique

Having 3 houses and 2 cabins means that there's lots of spaces for families to spread out: So join the crowd down on the beach or be alone in your own house or cabin.

Dinners tend to run late - 9PM? - and getting up late after a long refreshing sleep happens quite regularly, it's because the air Up North is so much better than downstate...

Our Boat House really is special--the only one of its kind that you will find on the entire lake! - one that includes a porch and family room (520 sq. ft.) right on the lakefront where you can watch your kids on our private beach. Surrounded by woods at the end of a 1 mile dirt road, get away from the crowds and enjoy the seclusion. The perfect spot for large family reunions or collegiate symposiums.

This should have been a 5 star review

  • 3 of 5

This lodge was easily one of the prettiest and most quaint cottages our family has ever rented. So peaceful, so beautiful, so full of original touches. The separate sleeping cottages with the dining house and main cottage were perfect for our large group.

However, I can only give it 3 stars because the owner lives onsite in one of the cottages. His presence felt very intrusive as he would walk around the common areas that we were enjoying with our family. He even came to the front door of the main cottage early Saturday morning to ask us for our trash. This may not bother some people, but it felt very intrusive to us.

Owner's Response: Ripple Lodge has 6 buildings, my home is on the South corner and, indeed, I do water the flowers and feed the wood furnace so if you want absolute privacy, it would be best that you rent some other property. Generally speaking, my presence is appreciated. PL.

Beautiful views

  • 3 of 5

We were there for a family reunion. We were told ithe main house was handicap wasn't. I was the first to arrive at about 2. We were told that that was ok, but the main house would not be ready until wasn't. It became available at around 5. The whole time we kept being reminded that we needed to get out of the way so they could clean. The cleaning crew was one guy. A crew of two would've had the place ready by 2.

As for the stay, it is a very lovely property. Since the weather was fantastic all week, we were able to eat all our meals in the main courtyard overlooking the lake. It was a great location for our family reunion.

The owner, Phillip, keeps a close eye on his property. He is usually within view, if you should need anything. He did let us know that we used too many of his blankets. I believe that was his only complaint of us.

I would recommend this for a large group, but beware of the many rules that are asked of you.

Owner's Response: Indeed, I do insist upon agreement with my "rules" and generally speaking those who rent the lodge find them quite reasonable - so please review them before booking. As regards my cleaning "crew", I also do what I can and having 6 buildings thoroughly cleaned in 6 hours is very difficult.... your patience is appreciated. As regards being "within view" - that is hyperbole....though I am generally available and able to help out from time to time.... Phillip Lundberg.

Unique Historic Cabins and Lodge--Perfect Summer Get-Away

  • 5 of 5

I can't express how much I love this place. To me, it's the perfect summer vacation spot for large extended families and friends--especially if you have children. The beach is easy to get to, and there aren't dangerous, steep stairs to navigate to get to the beach. The cabins and lodge are all rustic so you don't have to demand that children be super careful with all their surroundings--for example there's very little carpeting etc.

I personally love the historic charm of the place--it really feels like you've gone back in time. The screened in porches in the dinning hall and the boat house have great views of the water. The little cabins are super charming and fun to stay in. The dining hall is nice because you can seat such a large group of people together. Long lake is perfect for boating especially since there are cute little islands that you can explore. Another aspect that is nice about this place is the way it is surrounded by tall trees, so you are always in a cool breeze rather than baking in the sun--unless you want to go down by the water. There is also a nearby park that you can walk to which is great for a daily hike.

Because this place is so large, it is perfect for a big group. If I had the opportunity, I would return here every year with my family because I love the experience so much. The only critique that I can write is that the place is a little rustic, so renters should not expect the most updated decor or amenities (although there are new bathrooms, one new kitchen, and new washer, dryer etc.). But to me, this just adds to the historic charm. I wouldn't want it any other way.

Great way to enjoy a family reunion!

  • 5 of 5

Our host was very friendly & helpful. The fact that he resides on the property, made our visit that much more enjoyable. We have four families, so each was able to have their own cabin/house & not only enjoy each other, but have their privacy as well.

Building a fire on the beach at night was an added bonus & enabled us to tell family stories as we came together for this much needed reunion.

Ripple Lodge is now a memory that we all will cherish.

Owner's Response: Ripple Lodge has always been a Family oriented vacation spot where 3 or more generations can gather comfortably and enjoy the lake, the sun and the stars. It was wonderful to be accepted into the gathering and do my part to make everyone feel at home - and of course I also have my own spot and kitchen as we all need a space into which one may retreat as the situation warrants. My wife & I look forward to facilitating family gatherings in the years to come, though the "book now" new feature of Vacation Rentals (/vrbo) is not our preferred method of bookings, something with a bit more back and forth communication I think best to insure a good fit for a beautiful vacation.

Do you like to grill?--we have TWO larger Webber grills and a beautiful spot under towering pine trees looking down at the Lake. TIMBERS Recreation area (250 acres) is a half mile up the dirt road - fishing, hunting, hiking trails with 2 smaller lakes. Traverse City is just 10 minutes away offering all of its activities; Sleeping Bear dunes is a 20 minute drive, Interlochen Music Camp is about 15 minutes away. Most important of all Long Lake is special, having some of the clearest water of any lake in Michigan and is about 7 miles long by 1.5 mile wide - not to mention 75 feet deep in some parts: the Mozart of Michigan lakes! Our boathouse and beach face West so the sunsets are superb and the boathouse is perfectly situated to keep an eye on your kids playing on the beach. Don't forget your boat, walleye is the fish to catch. The Dock goes out in May and comes back in in October. During OFF Season, we are especially quiet and affordable, the lake is swimmable until October and the ice comes in around Christmas - Ice Skating, Ice Fishing, or just read a great book in the seclusion, Kafka anyone?
