Modern, immaculate and comfortable cabin surrounded by nature at it's finest
About John Barca
John and I like a nice, simple, yet clean and comfortable place to stay when we get away from our daily routine of work and raising kids, the property in Kentucky is just that. John, who has always wanted to be a farmer, had been in search of a special place for many years. He fell in love with Kentucky because of its rolling hills, green pastures, water supply, ability to fish and hunt and to get back to nature. The farm was originally 149 acres and was owned by relatives of the current neighbors. Tobacco was primarily grown on the farm but during World War 2 the farm was used to grow hemp. The hemp was used for ropes and clothes for the soldiers and military to help with the war effort. Later years different breeds of cattle were grazed and the hemp fields were turned to hay and a little tobacco. Currently the farm only grows hay which is cut, baled and used by our neighbors for their cattle. The lack of cattle grazing on the farm has allowed the woods and non-hay areas to grow back naturally. Having more woods and cover has increased the number of deer, turkey, rabbits and other wildlife allowing them to flourish. The barn now cabin is the actual tobacco barn used for decades to hang and dry the tobacco and hemp after harvesting. The cabin, stock barn and chicken coop were built with lumber cut from the farm itself. We love our little cabin and farm and we are sure you will too.

Why John Barca chose Somerset
How many people get to sleep in an 90 year old tobacco barn and have 64 acres to run on, truly a piece of old Kentucky history. The farm is centrally located to numerous attractions which makes for an affordable vacation. It is peaceful, quiet and beautiful yet not to far from town and the lake.

The property was amazing. The cabin was perfectly cozy and clean (however, if you are over 6'2", you may bonk your head on occasion.) The creek was clear and gorgeous with blue clay bottoms, mossy rocks, sprawling Sycamore roots, and geodes. The rolling hay fields were majestic with stretching views. The property is tiered and every tier seems to have a different relaxing feel to it.
Out of all of the VRBOs/AirBNBs we have stayed at, this is the only one where we felt like we were visiting a friend's house. John was very kind and communicative but also the house had a warm feeling. It was fully supplied with spices, oils, aluminum foil, TP, paper towels, great knives, towels, ice, etc. etc. etc. We have been to many properties where you needed to buy so many basic household items that the vacation can get overly expensive just to have basic cooking and living essentials.

Great Countryside Getaway
We loved our stay and John was very helpful!
What a GREAT getaway!
Where do you start!?!
Communication was terrific; the property was decidedly enjoyable; the cabin was beautiful. All as advertised.
We hiked the property thoroughly and truly enjoyed ourselves. Beautiful views...sunset from the shade of the meadow while looking east as the last light of day shown on the mountains was like a painting...only much better! 40 days without rain left the on-property watercourses a bit parched...but made hiking and exploring them and the pools within a lot of fun and offered a different view than you might otherwise get.
Dumas...our 4-year old Labra-Dane was exhausted every night!
Also worked as a great base of operations for traveling the surrounding areas...Cumberland Falls; hiking in the DBNF to remote, hidden waterfalls; Harland Sanders starting place; shortest creek; all terrific--all near by.
Cooked on the grill, enjoyed mornings on the deck, the fire pit is a great natural wonder of its own...all add to a very highly recommended destination.
Even the pizza from the Mellow Mushroom was great! Ordered to-go coming back from the Falls and enjoyed at our "ol' Kentucky home" !
Thanks John for making such a cool place available!
We are sooooo happy to hear that you all including the pooch had a great vacation. The photo you sent me of the sunset shining on the colored leaves was truly amazing. The rain finally showed up and the creek is flowing nicely again. Please come back to the farm as we really enjoy sharing our little piece of heaven with others. Kind regards, John and Caroline
This is a beautiful place to get away and relax! This is our second time renting this cabin. My wife and I just needed to get away from the business spend our anniversary together. We had beautiful fires every night and watched the shooting stars. John Barca who owns the cabin is probably one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet and he keeps everything top notch. As always he goes above and beyond to make sure your stay is superb.
Thank you for the great review and kind words. We are really happy to hear you both had a nice relaxing time on the farm. Hope you come back as it is always nice to share our little piece of paradise with others.
