Private River Front Setting
About Karen York
This is the home place in which I grew up. I attended Columbia High School. This has the small town charm where you know everyone.
Karen York purchased this House in 1974
Why Karen York chose Columbia
This is family owned property. I grew up with my brother on the river-fishing, swimming, canoeing, water skiing and boating. I have enjoyed many years on the river with our family and friends and would like to share this experience with other couples and families. There is nothing as enjoyable like watching the sunset over the mouth of the Scuppernong River and the Albemarle Sound every afternoon.
What makes this House unique
Watching the sunset every afternoon sitting one the deck with my family is what made me fall in love with the River House. We have shared many meals with our family and friends outside. Cooking local seafood. And best of all making home made peach ice cream.

Not exactly what we were expected
Check in went smooth and the location on the sound was beautiful and peaceful. However, when we went in the house it smelled musty and old. We had to wash the towels and wash cloths before we could use them for they had a sour, musty smell. The house was uneven and you would slide to your bedrooms and baths. The couch had no life left in the cushions and the living room chairs were uncomfortable to sit in.
We made a terrible mistake in our checkout date and didn't realize it till the owner called us on the evening we were to check out. We (all seniors) apologized and offer to leave but the owner said her guest, her nephew, would stay in her trailer up the road by her Mother. My question, where were the cleaning people that were to show up after we left at 11 AM on the day of checkout. We would have gladly vacated the home if someone would have advised us of our mistake. On Saturday, we got up at daybreak, cleaned the house, did the dishes and the laundry, stripped the beds. We had the sheets in the dryer and the towels and wash cloths in the washer when we left a little after 7 AM. We also took out the garbage and had bags for recycled items. The owner said she had to pay for the incoming guests lodging and gas so she kept half of our security deposit. We really felt bad and we would have paid for the extra night but the owner led us to believe there was no problem and in fact she didn't call us back as we asked her to. This is the worst experience in our 25 years of traveling together. The home has a peaceful relaxing sitting but the accommodations in the home need to be updated or replaced. Sorry, but we were all disappointed in the inside of the home but not the location.
Great stay in North Carolina
The property was great, on the water with a great view.
quiet retreat right on the sound
Nice house surrounded by quiet- located right on the sound. Amenities are great-paddleboard, outdoor shower, boat dock, firepit, puzzles, games, movies, sufficient space, comortable.
Thank you. It sure is relaxing listening to the waves on the deck.
My friends and I enjoyed our stay at Riverhouse with such a beautiful waterfront view. We loved the ducks, geese, colorful dragonflies, and baby bird in the birdhouse. Truly a step back in time to a more gentle and quiet life, yet not too far from adventurous roads. One day was a bit too breezy to set up our plein air easels so we hopped in the car to drive to Rodanthe to see the house in Nights In Rodanthe movie. What a treat to drive over the new bridge to Pea Island, Rodanthe, and Cape Hatteras! Then we returned to our comfortable riverhouse to relax and share the joys of the region’s natural beauty, people, and history.
We enjoyed our stay. The house was clean, comfortable, well furnished and well stocked with towels and linens. Everything about the house was as advertised. There were no problems or issues. We'd certainly stay here again if we return to the area.
Beautiful views. Lots of privacy and a perfect pet friendly property!
Edenton is the closest town listed on VRBO that is why it was chosen in the search name. Hopefully soon they will add Columbia, NC to the search list.
