HISTORY OF OUR FARM
The property which became Wakefield Farms was purchased in 1998 as a weekend escape from the hectic life of the city. The owners/innkeepers were raised on a farm and in a farming community even though they had lived their adult lives in cities. Thus, this property was found during the search for a respite from the city. The property consisted of approximately 35 acres and only the antique Greek Revival farmhouse existed on the tract. (The farmhouse had been moved to its current location from Bleiblerville via a short stay in Chappell Hill behind the Museum.) Then the barn, the pool and the Saltbox were added in order.
In 2001, adjacent property became available for sale and was incorporated into the initial tract. The expanded property quickly became more meaningful than an occasional get-away. By 2002, the owners/innkeepers made the complete move to the farm. Wakefield Farms was officially launched and named for the paternal grandmother of the innkeeper. In 2005, the decision was made to build a permanent residence on the 2nd tract of land and the Bed and Breakfast was expanded to include the Greek Revival Farmhouse. Since then, the property has been home to Registered Santa Gertrudis cattle, Boer goats, Dorper sheep and assorted chickens. Currently, only the goats, sheep and chickens are being run on the farm and overseen by the Great Pyrenees dogs and, of course, Molly, the German Short-Haired Pointer! Most recently, the Rosenwald School was moved in and restored to complete the village of the Bed & Breakfast!
Susan Borck purchased this cottage in 1998
THE PRIVATE COTTAGE
The Private Cottage can be architecturally characterized as a Texas saltbox; distinguished from a New England saltbox by the break in the back roof line. It was built sometime in the early 1850's. by William Zeiss, a German immigrant who came to America in 1852. Similar building characteristics to other dwellings constructed by German immigrants of the time of this cottage were visible during the 'archeological demolition' of the burned out structure back to the original dwelling seen today. First, the building originally had the board and batten style of siding. This was exposed with the 2000 fire and subsequent restoration. Thus, where board and batten siding was missing due to later modifications/fire, vintage building materials were used to restore the board and batten siding. As was later common, the building was then clad in clapboard siding. Hence, this dwelling actually has two layers of exterior siding restored with period materials. The clapboard siding was restored with reclaimed siding from the Victorian-era addition.
THE PRIVATE SCHOOLHOUSE
The last addition to the current Bed and Breakfast enclave was the Rosenwald School in 2006. The owners worked with the National Trust for Historic Preservation to identify the school as the Wellmann School which originally set to the west of Washington, Texas in Washington County; about 20 minutes to the northeast of the current location.
Prior to reaching its destination at Wakefield Farms, the school was moved to the town of Washington where it sat just behind the U. S. Post Office. When purchased from the, then, owner, a Bluebonnet Electric Magazine accompanied the school which began the identification of the school. This school was built in ca. 1924.

My husband and I spent the weekend in the Saltbox house. We loved it! It is a wonderfully quiet get away from the city but close enough to go to College Station for the day and/or Brenham for dinner. The house itself is just beautiful inside and there are breakfast fixings in the frig for the mornings. We would highly recommend it!
We did not have any issues finding Wakefield Farms, even utilizing Googlemaps without fail. The gate was opened so we drove straight in on the dirt and grass driveway and pulled up to the location. We called as we were not sure where to park, and Susan gave us finalized directions. There were 3 buildings surrounding a nice sized pool and hot tub. The largest building, painted red, was the schoolhouse. We entered the side door and were taken aback with the beauty of the décor inside. The beautiful rustic white on white furnishings accented by black hutches and cabinets was so relaxing and soothing. Everything was very clean! The kitchen was well equipped and we utilized the oven and microwave without issues. The living area was comfortable as was the king-sized bed. As we were in the in the country, bugs were to be expected and we only encountered one small problem. There were quite a few tiny spiders on the corner of the bed. We called Susan and she brought in some bug spray and attended around the whole of the bed. We later noticed the spray was for ants and roaches, so we weren't sure how effective it would be on spiders. Throughout the weekend, we inspected the bed before laying in it thoroughly and only found a few more here and there on the bed and on the side chairs. Again, they were extremely small and only stood out because the linens and furniture were white. We didn't have any bite marks of any kind. We did use the pool on both Friday afternoon after our arrival and on Saturday mid-day. The only objection to the pool/hot tub was we felt it could have been vacuumed a bit better. We did not utilize the hot tub because of this reason. The pool was very refreshing and we enjoyed being lazy in the sun. There were flying insects all around, but again, you're in the country and it's to be expected. Again, we did not receive one bite from anything. We loved relaxing and listening to the sounds of the crickets, cows and goats all around us. The TV worked and we took advantage of the rainy evening snuggled inside for movie night. We had plenty of hot water in the shower and the water pressure was fantastic! We definitely plan on returning for our next couple's romantic get-a-way. The owner's have done a beautiful job restoring the buildings and making them comfortable for visitors.
This was our second stay at Wakefield. We have stayed in the Scholl and now Saltbox. Both are incredible. This is the ultimate in rest and relaxation. Just a stones through from Houston Wakefield is the ultimate getaway. The property is gorgeous and the accommodations beyond compare. Rustic in nature but opulent in terms of décor. The attention to detail is second to none. Don't miss out on this opportunity to escape for a romantic weekend. We absolutely love the entire "Wakefield Experience".
My boyfriend & I just stayed at Wakefield Farms this past weekend Friday & Sat night. We had no idea what to expect. We were just counting on all the wonderful reviews that we read & going with the flow. We were pleasantly surprised and very happy with what we found. Wakefield Farms is a little hidden gem out in the country. The property is beautiful! We stayed in the private cottage. It's painted all-white & very tastefully done with a French country/rustic modern feel. It has a very stylish full kitchen with brand-new appliances. The bathroom is huge & more than enough room for 2 people. The whole vibe of the place is very relaxing. Our cottage looked out to the pool, which I heard is the only pool at a B & B in the entire area. Susan the owner is just as sweet as she can be. She was so helpful with all kinds of tips & suggestions about the area as well as patiently answering all of our real estate questions. I loved all the little touches such as the candy bar on the bed, The pillow menu and the bowl of fresh eggs from her chicken coop waiting for us on the kitchen counter. We just wanted to get out of the city, which was only an hour drive from Houston, and relax and just explore as we wished and have no schedule. Wakefield Farms is the perfect place to do this! It's about a five minute drive from the little downtown of Chapel Hill. The town is tiny but it does have a really cute Icehouse called to 291 saloon and a great restaurant called Bever's. There's also a winery call Texas star winery right down the road from Wakefield farms that has a tasting room. Their wines are actually really good! we also ventured over to Roundtop which is about a 25 min drive. We had an amazing dinner at Royers! I highly recommend their shrimp and grits and their quail! Also, you must try a slice of their homemade pie… Salted Caramel & their apple pie were both out of this world! We also ventured over to the little town of Burton which is about 20 minutes away and found the White horse saloon which is a really fun watering hole with live music! We learned that there is a lavender & wine festival that goes on in Chapel Hill in early August & we are definitely going to try & attend next year & stay at Wakefield Farms! I am also going to try & organize a girls weekend there soon! Forgot to mention that the place is very clean. Thank you again Susan for the wonderful hospitality at your special place!

Washington County boasts many wineries and hobby wineries which compose our local wine trail. Included are Saddlehorn Winery, Pleasant Hill Winery, Texas Star Winery and Windy Winery. Both Saddlehorn Winery and Pleasant Hill Winery have vineyards to enjoy.
Our area is reknowned for the Round Top Antiques Festival, Maifest, Bluebonnet Festival, Scarecrow Festival and the Official Texas 4th of July Parade in Chappell Hill!
The Round Top Antiques Festival takes place the from the last weekend of March through the first weekend of April in the spring and the last weekend of September through the first weekend of October. Thousands (and we do mean 'thousands') of vendors set up their wares along a 10 miles stretch of Highway 237 in Fayette County. Little historic towns along the way with names like: Round Top, Warrenton, Carmine and Shelby participate with antiques vendors, food stands and restaurants, entertainment, dances and good 'ol junkin'!
The weekend in spring and fall after the Antiques Festival brings down the tents, the Bluebonnet Festival in the spring and the Scarecrow festival in the fall occupy the main street of Chappell Hill. Vendors of all sizes and flavors entertain shoppers, foodies and gawkers.
While attending the spring festivals, a huge side benefit is the opportunity to see the Texas native wildflowers in all of their glory along the highways and byways! Bluebonnets, Indian Paint Brush, Black-Eyed Susans (an many other varieties of rudbekia), Buttercups and Wine Cups can be seen along the roadside and in pastures. Washington County is legendary for its abundance of wildflowers each spring.
Can't miss the 4th of July Parade in downtown Chappell Hill. Get a great taste of small town American in its glorious, non-homogenized state! Texas Rangers, the Kazoo Marching Band, local elected officials and the citizenry on homemade floats are all at their best; throwing candy to kids of all ages!
The Maifest Parade in downtown Brenham is indicative of the towns long standing history from the 19th Century to today. The towns young people ride community and business sponsored floats of grand design through the streets. The highlight is the floats carrying the King and Queen and Junior King and Queen of the festivities which include coronations, Maifest Ball and other community festivities.
