About the property

A Classic Alaska Dry Cabin on the Shores of Kenai Lake

This is the REAL Thing! An Alaskan recreational cabin located in the heart of the Kenai Peninsula. Off the Grid, No electricity, No cell service, hand pump well water, propane lights, and wood stove for heat. We have a Wild and Remote feel! But we're just moments from the Seward Highway (one of the top rated National Scenic Byways) and 19 miles north of Seward. Most likely you won't want to leave, just chill at the deck fireplace in the steamer chairs, sip your coffee or wine, BBQ some steaks, be....

But if you do have a hankering for adventure- fish charters out of Seward, the Seward Sealife Center, the world famous Kenai and Russian rivers, historic Hope, white water rafting the six mile, scenic floatplane rides, stunning historic trail hikes, and fabulous berry picking are all at your fingertips within 30 minutes or less..

If you are familiar with the forest service cabins all over Alaska and the US west you know the drill. We've just taken it to the next level of comfort! Wood provided! Scenes for Free! The soundtrack is lapping waves, float plane flybys, the Alaska Railroad 6 times a day through the property, and our resident eagle ( she sounds like a big chicken!)

The toilet facilities are an outhouse and bathing can be done at the lakefront sauna. Just like the old sourdoughs....

Swimming and Sauna use are at your Own Risk- the lake is COLD! It is a melted Glacier after all....

(We are 4 cabins located on 15 acres at the headwaters of the Kenai River! Check out our other listings! VRBO #790188, #728022, and #790190)

About Jan-Ake Schultz

We moved to Alaska in 2000 and were wonderfully fortunate to acquire this property. After building the cabin and raising Our family here, now is the time to share it with like-minded travelers who will appreciate its unique and magical features

Jan-Ake Schultz purchased this cabin in 2000

Why Jan-Ake Schultz chose Kenai Peninsula

This is no hotel room. If you sit on the deck and read about Alaska Nellie and the sourdoughs who pioneered this great land you will feel and be a part of the story. The Iditarod National Historic Trail runs along the frozen lakefront in winter......

What makes this cabin unique

History- You will pass the 100 Year old historic cabin on the way in, you will travel the gravel footpaths, you will watch the morning fog burn off the lake, you will witness and hear the flight of sandhill cranes overhead in season

Off the grid perfection!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at the hunter's cabin, such a beautiful piece of land and the ingenuity/thoughtfulness/attention to simple details made it extra special. We made use of the new outdoor shower and appreciated the warmth of the wood stove after three weeks in our pop up camper - it was luxury! Heavy rains made our exit muddy and swampy, but otherwise we can't wait to come back! Thanks!

Luxurious Beauty in a Rustic Setting

  • 5 of 5

Jan has a magical place in the Chenaga cabin on Kenai Lake. If you're looking for high-end amenities and luxurious accommodations, this isn't the place for you. If, however, you want to discover how little you need to fully relax and enjoy incredible beauty this is the place in spades! Even though there is no electricity, you don't need it--the propane lights are enough and you can recharge stuff on trips to Seward. No bathroom--no problem! The charming, clean outhouse is convenient and keeps you occupied looking at currency on the walls from places like Tanzania and Hong Kong. The propane burner and grill were all we needed to cook meals and make coffee. The broad deck with a fabulous woodstove and incredible views remove any need for TV, Internet, and device-addiction. Getting unplugged was relaxing. This was our second trip to this cabin and we loved every minute of it. Don't make the mistake of booking it for 2 nights, you need at least 3 and 4 was perfect! Jan was very responsive when we had a couple of issues (operator error on our part) and came right away to make sure we had enough propane. The touches in this cabin, the comfort of the beds and chairs--Perfect! Thank you Jan! We'll be back.

Amazing, tranquil

  • 5 of 5

This is one of the most amazing places I have ever stayed. The cabin and the setting are beautiful and place you in middle of nature. Jan has provided all the essentials for a comfortable stay. The fireplace on the deck was our favorite place to gather. The sauna was great too. Easy access to Seward and area activities. Thank you for sharing this property, Jan.

This place has it all. The cabin was very clean and well stocked. The inside fireplace kept the cabin at just the right temp and the fireplace on the patio was where we spent most of our time. We had a mix of sunny and rainy days and loved them all. The water changes colors with the light and the snowy mountains in summer were incredible. We saw sheep grazing above the treeline on the far mountains with our binoculars. There were lots of different birds visiting so sitting on the porch and taking it all in with a cozy fire was a highlight of our vacation. Privacy, comfort and beauty.

Owner's Response: You found the Sheep! Good eyes! I need binoculars to see them well. I once watched a bear stalking them! Amazing to watch as they all moved across the mountain "choreographed"

"Remote" is the Alaskan description of a place off the road system and hard to get to; usually involving float planes, water taxis, snow machines, hiking, or skiing.... We feel "remote!" but are just 30 meters by garden cart from your parked car...
