A step back to a simpler time, this early era Isle of Palms beach house is very comfortable and convent to the beach. On the corner, only one block to the beach with a caution walk at Palm blvd makes this home a great place to spend a relaxing get away in a quiet neighborhood. You can hear the waves crash the beach while enjoying one of the many porches and decks. The house hasTwo bedrooms, 2 bath with the privacy of a whole house.

The house has hardwood floors, and many family antiques. You will feel right at home. The master suite with California king and twin day bed and private shower bath,. Also a Queen bedroom, and there is a reading area with click/clack futon and hall bath. The living dining area has a breakfast bar looking into the kitchen, 42" flatscreen TV and some antique furnishing. The kitchen is small but open to the entire living area and fully equipped to serve six. A very private unit with private screened porch that opens onto a hammock deck. There is also a Sun/Moon Deck on the roof that is ideal for enjoying a glass of wine, star gazing and taking in the wonderful coll ocean breezes in the evening. The back deck is prefect to entertain, enjoy a nice meal, accessible from the kitchen with picnic table and grill. The pool is on the enclosed side of the house accessible from the back. A great pool for floating and relaxing with nice deck catching the afternoon sun.

The open floor plan is great for a small family or small group. The living area has a full sized couch and love seat and over sized chair. Ther is a 42" flatscreen HDTV and a small music library. Each bedroom also have HDTV's. The dining area has a table that seats six and the breakfast bar seats two.

This is a fun location that has yard games (bocci and croquet) some beach chair provided and the pool has an in water inflatable volleyball net. There is even a beach cart to tote all your beach supplies with ease. The only thing you'll need to bring is your beach towels and food.

Family Friendly & Great Owner

  • 5 of 5

We loved being in town for the whole weekend. Bob is easy-going and a great host. Everything you need is one location: pool, pet friendly, easy beach access. The pool and house are clean and well stocked. The property was easy to navigate even with a baby in tow. We'll be back!

Clean house, decent location, needs considerable updating

  • 3 of 5

The good...

-House was clean.

-Located a couple blocks from the beach and about a 15 min walk to the boardwalk shops/restaurants/bars. For those unfamiliar with IOP, BE AWARE that you do have to cross Palm Blvd. to get to the beach...this is the island's main road and can be VERY busy. This isn't really a "negative," as most of the properties on the beach-side of Palm Blvd. are either huge, expensive houses or condos closer to the shops, so you'd have to deal with this with most IOP rentals.

The not-so-good...

-The house is old and shows its age. There has been some updating, particularly to the master bedroom, but this is clearly a 1950's beach house. The fixtures in the main bathroom shower are old and a bit rusty. The furniture throughout looks mostly second-hand. The front porch has unfixed water damage. Washer and dryer are in a dirty room open to the outside. Exterior needs cleaned up and even a fresh coat of paint would do wonders. What has been updated looks very "home handyman" quality. In short, the house needs some TLC to be what's expected from an IOP rental property.

-The AC is inconsistent. You'll be shivering in bed when it kicks on but sweating when it turns off. Also, the AC compressor is directly outside of the master bedroom and adjacent to the pool deck...a poor location when it comes to noise.

-Pool is on the side of the residence and you have to walk down the rear stairs to the ground floor and around the back of the house to access it.

-Master bed was just ok...I've slept in worse, but it wasn't 5-star hotel quality, either.

The rest...

-The description doesn't say it anywhere, but this is an upstairs/downstairs duplex. The rental is the UPSTAIRS ONLY and the property owner lives downstairs. We found this out through research prior to our arrival and the owner was gone for most of our stay, but this should really be clearly stated in the description, as it could be a big deal for some people.

Conclusions...

Three stars (more like 2.5, but I'll give the benefit of the doubt) mostly for the location and that, despite the problems, it was clean. Needs updating before it's worth the price.

Needs work - owner lives on property

  • 2 of 5

No mention that owner lives and stays on property. We rent a house for privacy and were not expecting anyone else there. The home was very clean, but in need of repair. Cooktop was cracked, basics only in kitchen. Laundry room is only accessed from outside and was dirty and no door. Still going through repairs, upper and lower decks were soft from water damage. No direct access to pool, must walk around house. The pool decking was not relaxing because the a/c compressor is ear level on deck and very noisy. Also the a/c is not great, wasn't too hot when we were there, but imagine in summer house would be very hot. Easy walk to beach, but bring your own chairs, the ones mention were not great. Beds not that comfortable, master bedroom needs a headboard, pillows kept falling in open space, and needs new bed pillows, they were terrible. All in all not what we expected.

Cute house.

  • 3 of 5

The house was cute and a very easy walk to the beach. We enjoyed our stay overall, but I find it very odd that no review nor the home info mentions anywhere that the owner lives and stays on the property. There was a mention of a private apartment but that was it. It was not a bother, but would be a nice detail to note. The home needs some love in places. Still going through some repairs and the deck on the second level screened in porch was soft from water damage. The guest bedroom was not a comfortable mattress and couldn't sleep on it. Even a little mattress topper would do wonders to that bed. Isle of Palms is overall such a fun place to go and we will be back!!!

Vintage beach cottage slowly upgrading

  • 3 of 5

Let me say this up front - I prefer low-key beach cottages. I don't want to stay in a 'fancy' home with furnishings I have to be overly concerned about damaging by, goodness forbid, tracking in sand or salt water drips. This vintage beach cottage meets that criteria - it's a 1950's vintage home, which has had some upgrades to bring it to the end of the 20th century, but is decidedly unfussy and as an additional bonus allows pets! The rental accommodations are on the 2nd floor of the structure, with a private apartment in the lower level. The 2 bed / 2 bath format works well for 4 adults but would be a challenge with more people. The living / dining furnishings can really only accommodate up to about 4 - 6 people comfortably. There are several antique furniture pieces that are quite charming and hopefully point to the trend the owner plans. The kitchen is small and would be a challenge if you plan to cook large family meals. For simple breakfast/lunch meals, though, it is fine. Access to washer/dryer is available in the lower level, which is quite nice for longer stays. The pool, while small, is a wonderful cool diversion in the heat of the day - bring your own floats for lounging. There is no direct access to the pool from the 2nd floor decks, though, forcing you to walk around the back of the house to get to it. The owner notes that the A/C system has a hard time keeping up with SC summers, so if you like your room temperature below 75F, this is not the place for you. The only negative comments I have are that several of the furnishings are damaged and in need of repair, which diminishes the apparent quality of the rental property. Outdoor lighting is almost non-existent, making navigation of the stairs to get into the property a bit of a hazard at night. Additional exterior lighting would improve the safety and security of the property.
