SANTARÉM

RIBATEJO'S CAPITAL AND THE GOTHIC CITY

Now the region´s farming centre, Santarem was founded by the Romans and conquered by the Moors in the 8th century, who were in turn driven out by Dom Afonso Henriques, Portugal´s first king, in 1147.The reconquest of Santarém and, in that same year, of Lisbon were crucial steps in the establishment of Portugal as a nation state.

After the reconquest, many feudal parliaments (cortes) were held in Santarém and king Dom Fernando I, in particular, was very fond of the city and chose to be buried there. The city was indeed one of the most important in mediaeval Portugal, as shown by the large number of churches and its royal palace (Santarem´s cathedral). There are still numerous examples of Gothic buildings in the city.

In the 15th century, during the period of Portugal´s maritime discoveries, expeditions like the conquest of Ceuta(1415) were planned in the royal palace of Santarém. Pedro de Meneses, first governor of Ceuta (1415–1437) after the Portuguese conquest, is buried in a magnificent Gothic tomb in the Igreja da Graça and also buried in the same church is Pedro Alvares Cabral, the Portuguese navigator that discovered Brazilin 1500.

Despite the city´s prominent position, the big earthquake of 1755 hit Santarem hard, and many historical monuments were lost. Then, during the Peninsular Wars of the early 19thcentury, the city was invaded and pillaged by both the French and British armies.

Today the city is surrounded by large agricultural and livestock farms, and lies at the centre of the fertile Ribatejo river delta, which boasts flat, well-irrigated fields that produce excellent beef and milk cattle, fighting bulls, Lusitano horses, maize, tomatoes and melons. Santarem is also famous for the quality of its bullfighting and horse riding, with much of the cattle herding done on horseback.

Santarem also lies at the centre of the Tagus Wine Route, with several famous vineyards, among them Quinta da Alorna, near the town.

One very traditional Portuguese dish typical of the Santarem area is Sopa da Pedra, a thick soup made with beans, pigs ears and country sausages made of cured meat.
