Owners Jacklynn and Elijah also run Chilkat Environmental in Haines, Alaska. Elijah is an environmental engineer and Jacklynn is a biologist. With our team of scientists we are fortunate to work throughout Alaska and the Aleutian Islands for Alaska Tribes. We have been visiting the Big Island for the past 15 years and have always dreamed of having a place in Hawaii to call home. We have never felt as happy or as healthy as we do when we are on the Island. Currently, we spend the summers in Alaska and the winters at our delightful home in Hawaii.
Jacklynn purchased this cottage in 2015
Our property and surrounding area is native Ohia forest sacred to Hawaiians. Efforts to support the native ecosystem are underway and include controlling invasive Albezia trees, mongoose and pigs. The jungle is home to; Hawaiian Owl and Hawk, Koa, Screw pine, Guava, Passion fruit Gold Dust Day gecko, Green Anole, songbirds, Praying Mantis, diverse ferns and flowering plants. You will enjoy the bamboo outside your cottage along with the bananas, fruit orchard, flowers and palm trees in your fully equipped private cottage.
We use natural cleaning products, solar-power and water catchment. Pesticides, herbicides and chemical fertilizers have not been used here. Our nighttime temperatures are perfect for restful sleep. We value your privacy and don’t require interaction for check in or checkout unless you want to say hi or have questions. Puna Rainforest Retreat is a great place to base your Big Island adventures.
The unit was clean and accurately portrayed. Enjoyed the quietness of the property, starry nights, birds singing, and frogs croaking (even though they are invasive). The owners are putting in a lot of work to rid invasives and are in the process of adding a 1 mile hiking trail through the rainforest which was fun to walk. The unit is powered totally from solar, nice to be off the grid. We plan to stay again.
This was a beautiful little place tucked away in a secluded part of the big island. The cabin was well stocked and well maintained--it had everything we needed. Highly recommended!
We are centrally located with many attractions within a short distance. The retreat is quiet and has no light pollution at night for unbelievable skies. Neighboring properties include La’akea Permaculture Farm and rainforest. Opihakao Road, only 1 mile away, is a world-class skateboarding hill and one of the best downhills and climbs for road bikes on the island. Cycling is ideal here because of the short distances between attractions. Natural steam vents are close by and funky Pahoa is 4 miles away offering fantastic organic food and supplies leaving little reason to leave Puna. The Ahalanui Beach Park and Pohiki Bay are 8 miles away and offer paddleboarding, surfing, body boarding, swimming and hot springs. Kalapana and the new Kaimu Black Sand Beach are about 7 miles away near Uncle Robert’s kava bar and Sunday farmers market. A recent addition to Kalapana is the UFO landing pad and star visitor sanctuary created by the Reinstated Kingdom of Hawaii. The best snorkeling on the island is 10 miles away at Wai’opea tidepools near Green Lake and the heated ocean pools at Champagne Ponds. Also near Kapoho is the Ancient Mango Grove leading to intertidal swimming pools.
