Adequate

  • 3 of 5

This place feels like a beach home, a little worn but with everything you need. You cannot see the beach, you are a block away. You can see the water. Walking to the beach is trivial, and there are some seaside attractions in easy reach. The highway along the beach is loud during sleeping hours with windows open. The bathroom is a bit cramped. The stairs leading to the entry and deck are not solid. The bedroom and kitchen/living area are both large. I found a good book on the book exchange shelf and there were good titles in a small DVD library.

How Sweet it is!

  • 5 of 5

Year 2 at the beach "sweet" - a week I look forward to all year as I jostle a demanding career against care-giving duties. Maureen and Alan's homey suite is large by my standards (coming from a cramped city apartment) with a perfect view. Nestled on a quiet avenue just behind the Island highway, it affords an expansive view of the Salish Sea while sipping your morning coffee on a lusciously comfortable sectional. If and when I pry myself off of it, I can take a ramble up to the quaint village. Best hits so far are: Baileys for their great BLT and friendly service, Mulberry Bush for a couple of books (I don't need!), and the local Pharmasave for some unexpected find (like very affordable cookware). If, unlike me, you're not a dilettante, a 15 minute trip to Parksville will get you some big box offerings although I find it all a bit busy for a relaxing holiday.

But who comes here to shop? It's more about dreaming away the day on a sandy beach, with a good read and the occasional refreshing dip in crystal clear waters. Watching kids build castles in the sand. It's never more than a five minute walk across the road. If you're a gardening fan, the whole town is festooned with flowers much of the year. Lovely dahlia displays in August and the amazing Milner Gardens nearby with its spring rhodos among the groves of elderly Douglas firs.

I am grateful to the Footes for their hospitality - never intrusive but always responsive if something is needed. Their clean, bright and comfortable space is so welcoming while not being fussy and pretentious as Homeaways can sometimes be. And, as a budding stargazer, it was worth the price of admission just to stand on the balcony in the wee hours and see Orion rising in the east with his sword and shield clear as could be. Who would not be enchanted? I had a wonderful time!

Lovely, clean place in excellent location

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in this lovely place by the beach. It was very clean and Maureen came by shortly after we arrived to see that we had everything we needed, which we did. Loved the incredible view and our cozy deck with a BBQ to relax. We will be back

Tired, outdated and not well kept. Not worth the money.

  • 2 of 5

We had a 4 night stay here. While the location is great for all that you want to see and do in the area, not much else is good about this rental. It is not worth the money . It has not been well cared for. The blinds through which you see the ocean view are bent, broken and dirty (as are all of the other blinds in the house) . The walls throughout the home are dirty and paint chipped. The deck floor paint is peeled. The toilet seat is old and chipped and the bathroom smells musty, damp and of strong mildew. We feel ripped off having paid what we did for 4 nights here. I guess 'they' (places like this) have the market cornered. The owner was pleasant and we have no complaints about her.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to submit a review, and we are really sorry and very surprised that this is what you took away from your stay. Yes the blinds can get a bit bent from guests opening and closing. I always make sure the suite is extremely clean, and I have high standards. The bathroom is VERY clean and there is no smell of mildew anywhere. As for the toilet seat it is solid, not plastic and there are no chips in it, just some paint rubbed off on the underside. The only paint that is chipped is in the bathroom from taking the laundry hamper out. A very small spot. The walls are clean throughout. Again I look at it from a guests point of view. If it was me staying here would I feel comfortable and relaxed or be bothered by dirt..absolutely not! We paint the decks every year, we were doing ours while you were there. It was the first run of sun we had and of course we could not do the suite side as you were staying there. We actually did ours too soon as the rain the next day did not help it set. We have had many people stay with us and have never had anyone complain about the suite being tired or unclean. For the location, view and cleanliness of the suite I would be shocked if you could find better value elsewhere.
