About Duff and Rachael

My wife and I LOVE to camp. At least, we did. Before we had kids. Before our bones started to ache from sleeping on the ground on our meager inflatable pads. We didn't used to mind waking up at dawn to chirping birds, scampering squirrels, and two inches of frozen sleet weighing down our sagging tent. Most mornings we would ignore our frozen noses, puffy eyes, and damp feet due to the puddle that formed on the tent floor during the stormy night. The beautiful views, the fresh air, and the crackling warmth of a camp fire made up for that. But then, our baby came along. And camping with babies is hard. So, we decided that the yurt I had so lovingly erected before we got married, the yurt that I had intended to live in during my Thoreau-inspired bachelor days, would be a suitable compromise. It would bring us (and our babies) closer to nature. We could still enjoy spectacular solitude, a crackling campfire, and the night sky replete with millions of stars. Yet, in the comfort of the yurt, we could sleep on a real mattress, have running water whenever we wanted, and turn on lights when it got dark. With our busy lives now, however, we are unable to escape to the yurt as often as we would like. And, we didn't want our Mongolian ger nestled in this little patch of heaven to get lonely. So, we invite you, our next guest, to come experience the beautiful, natural environment of Southwest Colorado -- the place where the Ancestral Puebloans called home a thousand years ago. And, we want to share it with those who, like ourselves, like to be close to nature but also like to have many of the comforts of home.

Anniversary escape

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I recently stayed at the yurt for our anniversary and it was wonderful! Spacious and warm inside, even colder temps at the end of April. Loved seeing both the mesa in the National Park and the southern Colorado mountains from the property. The mattress on the platform is very comfortable. The kitchen & grill equipment had what we needed, and we enjoyed some meals in Cortez and Mancos. Cortez has large grocery stores, but Mancos has a wonderful little natural foods store. We were able to walk around the property some, and enjoy the views, birds, and wildflowers. Great getaway! We would recommend a 4WD for the driveway if it's going to be muddy/rainy, or take their advice and park at the beginning of the driveway.

Amazing yurt & setting. Needs new outhouse and yard work.

  • 4 of 5

The yurt was fantastic and now we want one. The fine craftsmanship of the loft timbers added the WOW factor! The land is beautiful, super quiet and literally minutes from Mesa Verde and Mancos. As far as the yurt, don't change a thing. That outhouse needs work, leveled and at least a door. I like rustic but that is just rickety, especially for a vacation rental with such a fantastic yurt. Luckily we had decent weather, I couldn't imagine having my family using that outhouse in wind/rain/snow. Also, the "stuff" piles of random debris scattered about the property need to be cleaned up or consolidated. Overall, I'd totally stay there again but I hope you use this feedback. Thanks guys.

Owner's Response: Hi- We've been making improvements to the 35 acre property which is why you may have seen a debris pile which has since been cleaned up. Also, the outhouse does have a door, which is a heavy blanket and we are replacing it with a different blanket. We've found it's more convenient than a heavy door. Also, the outhouse is rustic but, as many guests have noted, it is in a pleasant location with a great view and it also doesn't smell like so many outhouses can. We will work on sprucing it up as well though so thanks for the tips.

Rustic, but comfortable

  • 4 of 5

Nice, secluded location for my husband and my getaway. We liked the property and really enjoyed sleeping under the stars on the loft. Rachel and Duff have provided many accommodations to make the rustic experience homey at the same time. Our downside was the lack of shower when we traveled and the bed was a bit small for us, but we made it work.

Affordable and accessible respite near Mesa Verde

  • 5 of 5

Had a wonderful time at the yurt, which was rustic yet well appointed. Description of the property was accurate. Did not meet the owners in person but they checked in with us via text and were friendly and helpful. I appreciate the balance of 1. affordable cost, 2. proximity to the national park, and 3. the yurt's homey attributes that made it unique and outdoorsy yet also a comfortable and accessible experience. It was a nice post from which to explore beyond the borders of our own backyard.

We really loved staying here!

  • 5 of 5

While we didn't get to meet Duff and Rachael (we hoped to, but the timing never worked out), we really loved what they have done with the yurt! We used the fire pit a few times, and loved cooking in the mornings on the wood stove. While the wood stove was a bit tricky to start, we figured it out eventually (with help of some information in the binder they left on the bar top).

The bed was super comfy and we liked being able to see the stars at night from inside the yurt. It was starting to get cold on our trip, so priority in the morning was starting a wood fire to get warm. We had been camping all summer, so it was nice to have an actual bed to sleep in. We'd definitely consider this a glamping experience. :) A bit primitive, but still comfy at night. This is exactly what we were looking for and we're happy.

Duff and Rachael supplied everything you might need. We rarely had to want for anything, and town is super close by if you want to bring food to cook or to get ice for the cooler. We're hoping to stay again next year!

Outstanding! What a beautiful setting!

  • 5 of 5

The yurt was clean, spacious, and well appointed. The platform bed with the window to the stars was a nice touch. Breakfast looking over the mesas was memorable. Pictures are accurate, this is a gorgeous wilderness escape, but within a few minutes of Cortez or Mancos for supplies (you are better off with Cortez)

The only caveats: no shower, the outhouse is a bit far in the dark, and the road in is quite uneven and bumpy. Pretty toasty during the day (however, this is Colorado....why would you be indoors during the day?) but cools down at night. Those are minor quibbles, however. This is one of the best places I've stayed, and I've traveled quite a bit. The hosts keep their distance but are quick to answer questions about the yurt or the area. Full documentation is provided in emails and in a printed manual on site. If you are interested in staying in southwestern Colorado, I doubt that you will find a better place.
