This sweet studio is one mile north of the Polynesian Cultural Center, and just across the street from Hukilau Beach. This is a long sandy beach that is clean and not crowded. You can swim, boogie board, surf, jog, or just enjoy the sand and the sun on this beach. Goat Island is just off shore and you can walk across the reef to explore the island. Water shoes recommended. Famous surf beaches such as Sunset beach and Pipeline are just a 15 minute drive north. Laie Falls trail head is just a few blocks from the property, just past the park in the neighborhood. Gunstock Ranch is 1/2 mile north and offers Horse back riding in the mountains for all ages. The Zip line is just a few yards past Gunstock Ranch.

It was okay. A good place to get out of the hustle and bustle of downtown. Other than the upstairs folk it was quiet.

The beach across the street made me cry, it was so full of our worlds discarded plastic! (Not the owners fault !)

It is under another unit and you can hear the scrapes of chairs and occupants walking around! Maybe a large rug for the upstairs would help muffle the sounds. The lay out is strange, but for just coming and going and cooking, it worked. A broom and dust pan would have been welcomed also a rug for inside the door. Just stepping in and removing your shoes makes for a sandy floor.

Not the worst, but I wouldn’t stay again.

The beds were quite uncomfortable, there were ants and a couple cockroaches (hard to avoid in Hawaii though), and the whole place just needs to be renovated. Also, the tenants upstairs were very loud. But the landlord was very nice and easy to work with. If you’re just looking for a really cheap place to sleep, it’s probably worth it, but we just did not feel comfortable there.

Spearfish, United States

This is basic country slightly shabby with no view, but comfortable and secure.

  • 3 of 5

Comfortable king bed and a bunk for kids or a bottom bunk for adults. Ceiling fan and good ventilation. Good wifi, great water pressure in the shower, big frig, no stove but adequate microwave and hot plate, somewhat separate room for early risers or late TV watchers. Stool in separate room from sink and shower to expand usage. We were comfortable with the security and leaving valuables in our room. It was a good and safe place to rest our heads and have coffee an a small breakfast while eating most of our meals and doing our washing (although there are machines there) at relatives in the area. My sisters and I would happily stay there again.

Owner's Response: Great price and location for walking to the beach, going for a morning jog in the meadow next door, and enjoying the country side of Oahu. Marci

Good for the dollars.

The reviews for this place are contradictory. I'm trying to cover everything here.

If I rated this among all places at all prices, I would need to rate it poorly. But I am rating it as a four because it is a bargain in a great location.

FIRST, this place is pretty much the cheapest place in town.

SECOND, this place is not for everyone.

THIRD, consider what you need and then select the place you want.

We wanted cheap and convenient. This place delivered.

Claims from other reviewers:

The claims of uncleanliness are grossly exaggerated. The real problem is rust and oxidation. I grew up two blocks from the ocean: everything rusted, faded, and oxidized quickly. This studio has some rusty things inside and out.

We did not see mold on anything inside, but there is some on an exterior awning. Think of this: Laie is so humid that the LDS temple down the street struggles to keep things white and mold-free. The church must spend a lot of time, money, and effort keeping the temple as white as possible. I can't expect a landlord to do better.

We (2 of us) did not find the space to be cramped at all. The bunks block half of the closet, but we were still able to get to everything easily.

The statement about the views is correct. The windows all look at fences. This did not bother us because used the place only to sleep or regroup between adventures.

The statement about the studio being rickety is partly true. It seems like the studio was a garage under the main home, partitioned off sometime later. There are some broken tiles in the WC, but the shower is amazing. There are some exposed communications cables and conduit secured against the walls, but nothing that looked dangerous. Linens were nice and clean.

As to our experience:

(1) Location perfect. If you're willing to jaywalk, you can be standing in the Pacific in 4 minutes. The LDS temple is 8 minutes' walk, and BYU-H is 12 or 13. Also, food trucks galore a little farther down the highway. Don't miss Ken's Fresh Fish on Fridays and Saturdays about a block away. Eat breakfast at the Hukilau Cafe, a block in the other direction.

(2) Kitchen a little less than expected. There is no oven, and you cook on hotplates. This just made crunchy leftover spring rolls less satisfying.

(3) We ran the ceiling fan in reverse so that the air circulated onto the head of the bed, rather than blowing on our feet.

We enjoyed our stay and will return. Inexpensive but location is perfect

Owner's Response: Thank you for your accurate review. We strive to have a clean, comfortable, and budget friendly space where people can come and enjoy the beautiful surroundings, and have money left over for entertainment, good food, and lots of fun. If you are looking for high end and glamorous, this is not what we offer. Thank you Felix for the great comments!
