Originally from Florida my husband and I spend as much time in North Carolina as our schedule permits! With four children, we are constantly on the move enjoying all outdoor activities - especially water-related! Rafting is a favorite for all of us and we go so frequently that we finally bought our own raft!
Robbi Peirce purchased this cabin in 2005
We have been coming to the mountains of North Georgia and Western Carolina since I was in High School and vowed one day to have a place of our own! We have enjoyed all of the local bluegrass hoe downs, Stecoah Valley Center performances, mountain fairs and celebrations and especially the friendly people of North Carolina! The pristine weather keeps us coming back for summer fun, the beautiful fall seasonal change and sometimes snow in the winter!
Enjoying an early cup of coffee on our deck while watching the Hummingbirds feed is the perfect way to start off the day! We love looking at the distant mountains, watching the sunset and listening to all of the mountain sounds! We spend lots of time at Lake Fontana with our 3 boys visiting waterfalls, rock jumping, tubing, picnicing and camping. White water rafting and tubing is a must just 20 minutes away!
As the owner of Little Elk Nob Lodge, I thought I would share with you our Leaf Viewing Trip last week. We flew into Asheville and had an easy early afternoon drive to the cabin. Although the leaves were just beginning to turn in Asheville, we enjoyed the drive, watching the burst of colors get brighter and brighter as we closed in on Robbinsville. The drive through Stecoah Valley was infused with colored canopied trees over the road which continued up to our cabin. Our first order of business was to relax on the deck and enjoy the colorful mountains in our view. I highly suggest the drive through the Smoky Mountains National Park (Cherokee) particularly this time of the year. The windy roads are ripe with some of the best fall leaf color in our area, and we were not disappointed! Taking 441 through Newfound Gap toward Gatlinburg was breathtaking. We, like all the other "peepers", used the 2 land pull offs to take in the fresh mountain air while snapping endless photographs of the colorful scenery. Although Gatlinburg is very "touristy", we found the Smoky Mountain Brewery just off the main road and had the BEST chicken wings ever! We purchased some Christmas gifts at the NOC (Nantahala Outdoor Center) and walked the streets! If you have the opportunity to go for a nice dinner, I highly recommend Snowbird Mountain Lodge which is located on the scenic Cherohala Skyway. The views of the mountains are spectacular year round and the Fireside Bar is very romantic! The food is pricey, but definitely worth the splurge. Cuddling up to the outdoor enclosed gas fire pit is worth the drive. Watching rafters and kayakers is always a treat at the Nantahala Outdoor Center in Bryson City, a 20 minute drive from the cabin. Their local crafted brews are very popular and Wesser's BBQ & Grill or River's End Restaurant serves up decent food along the Nantalaha River. Our recommendation, is EXPLORE, EXPLORE, EXPLORE!! Have a great trip.
This place is wonderful. Most places we have stayed, the pictures over sell the rental, not with this home. We were pleasantly surprised at the quality of everything, furniture, knicknacs, kitchen utensils and bedding. You really dont feel like you are in a vacation rental, it feels like your good friends are letting you stay there while they are away. Great fireplace, windows everywhere, open floor plan. Very good WiFi and Direct TV. The deck and views are incredible. One of our favorite things was siting in rocking chairs having a drink at the end of the day, watching the shadows flow across the mountains.
The location is a good compromise of being in the woods and fairly close to activities and shopping. You feel like you are the only ones on top of a mountain. You can see a small part of another cabin a couple hundred yards away. Feels very private. We had a wonderful time going to Smokey Mtn National Park, hiking at Joyce Kilmer Forest, trout fishing, boating on Fontana and walking around Bryson City. We look forward to going back again.
This home is a keeper.......clean, spacious, comfortable, and well appointed. Pictures on the website are accurate, but the home is even nicer in person. Little Elk is in a great location for sight seeing around the area. Easy access, no 4-wheel drive necessary. Each day we enjoyed lots of deck time starting with coffee in the morning watching the clouds burn away as the sun comes up and ending each day watching the sun set and stars come out....beautiful views! During our stay we made three day-long trips: Cherohala Skyway out from Robbinsvile on 143 all the way to Tellico Plains, TN, then north on 360 to Vonore and 72 back to 129/28 and home; Blue Ridge Parkway via Cherokee, out on Black Camp Gap at the head of Heinetooga Loop for lunch, then back to the parkway and Waterrock Nob, exiting at Hwy 74 to get home; Cades Cove via the Foothills Parkway into Townsend, enjoyed a picnic lunch and the auto loop tour, then home via the Rich Mountain Rd. In between were shorter trips into Bryson City ( hiked Dave's Creek, ate lunch at an outside cafe beside the train depot, shopped at Ingles where beer is available if you need it), Stecoah for lunch at Stecoah Diner (good fresh food) and a visit to Bee Global for wonderful beeswax candles and globes, and plenty of time just relaxing and enjoying the house. Renting this house is a comfortable experience, the owners are quick to reply to emails, efficient, and are reachable for any questions. We look forward to a return visit! Doc & Karen
Lovely home in a great area. We cooked at the home every day, enjoyed coffee on the porch and visited the local fun spots.
This was our family's second stay at Little Elk Knob and it will not be our last. We refer to Little Elk as a home not a house because all the comforts of home are there. The kitchen is well appointed with everything you need. All the rooms are comfortable and spotless. If you are planning on bringing your motorcycle, the drive is passable for street bikes and there is covered parking in the garage. Our day trips were easy to reach from this location, the Cherokee Village and Museum, tubing in Deep Creek, horseback riding at the Nantahala Village stables and rafting on the Nantahala. If you are a hiker there are three access points to the AT within a few minutes drive. Best of all, the view of the mountains from the upper deck!
This is our second trip to Little Elk, and it did not disappoint. We'll be back!
My wife and I and our twin teenaged daughters had a really nice week. The house is very comfortable and easy to feel at home in. We rafted on the nearby Nantahala River, we tubed in Deep Creek, we swam and paddleboarded in Fontana Lake. We also swam in Santeetlah Lake. We went square-dancing in Brasstown. We enjoyed UNTO THESE HILLS, the Cherokee drama. We hiked in the National Park. And almost every night we roasted marshmallows and made 'smores at the fire pit. The views from the porch are beautiful and dramatic.
