Welcome to Derby Gardens! My pet name for my home that I have owned since 2006; I love this place! It's not really a "Garden" in the traditional sense (because I'm more of a tree guy and thus its minimalist setting) but it is a beautiful spot and the privacy afforded by the back yard is special. You'll see that as you begin to relax here.
All three queen size beds are new and clean. As are the bathrooms.
I am a father of three, at one time I was a high school French and P.E. teacher but since '98 I've made my living helping people pursue their real estate dreams; it's been really good to me and highly satisfying. I have travelled and worked in Europe, Eastern Canada, the Prairies, Hawaii, Mexico, California, Hawaii and Panama.
Fergus Kyne purchased this house in 2006
This property was one I had listed and the owners at that time afforded me the opportunity to buy it. The timing was great as my kids were younger; now 19,18, and 15. We used to play in the yard as well as have our own games of baseball and soccer right behind the property in the secret park! I made a fire pit area and we love to eat al fresco day or night on the large deck off the dining room. You can see Mt. Tolmie through the Oak Trees and this .25 acre lot has just a beautiful and peaceful serenity, even and sometimes more so especially at night. You'll see. What I especially like about the deck is that there are trees on both sides of the property that allow you to be out there and not have to been seen by the neighbors who are really nice and quiet anyways, but still it's a real benefit.
The home itself is ideal for couples, kids with families or anyone who seeks a simple and peaceful home in a quiet area of town. I have it set up for Netflix/DVD viewing with the most comfortable TV couch imaginable! Light a fire inside if you want to as well.
I have been able to acquire some art over the years and that adds to the ambiance of the main floor. Plug in your music on the Tivoli radio I've provided as you lounge or cook dinner inside or out with the infrared BBQ I purchased in 2014.
Downstairs you'll find a third bedroom, an office with WiFi, a really nice shower in the bathroom, a large laundry room, an area where I keep my tools and a place for you to hang your bikes or leave your clubs. There is also a large rec room where I like to escape in the summer time from the heat for an afternoon nap, some reading or playing cards while I turn on the electric fire place.
You can walk out the back yard gate through the fields, past one of the last remaining TRUE urban barns to shopping, pubs, (1550's, Maude Hunters) and services. Out the front turn right and in 500M your at the Cedar Hill GC, a fantastic up and down 3.4 km chip trail, 800M to McRae's Bistro as well as 800M to the Rec Centre at Cedar Hill which features a gym, indoor tennis, squash, arts programs and a café.
Enjoy a fire at night if you like in the pit, roast marshmallows with the kids, both big and small.
The home has a lot of good points--in a great location close to downtown Victoria, shops, restaurants, parks. Appliances worked well. We had ample hot water. The things in the house are a little on the quirkier side...don't be surprised to find a broken skateboard, a broken guitar and even stranger items.
Fergus was great/communicative throughout the booking process. He let my friends into the house a few hours before I arrived with our payment. However, they arrived to find him cleaning the house. I hope this review inspires him to hire a cleaning service in between renters. Many of the dishes in cupboards were still encrusted with food substances (crumbs in the utensil drawer, etc. There was old soap still in one of the showers, and the soap dispensers had green-colored surface cleaner in them rather than hand soap. My friends found moldy coffee grounds in the coffee maker in the kitchen when they arrived. All of these issues would be rectified if the owner would bring in a really good cleaning service in between renters.
During our stay, one of the toilets mysteriously clogged. I contacted Fergus and he said (incorrectly) that we should be able to find a plunger. After a half day of only one working toilet, I bought a plunger at Home Depot. The toilet was still not flushing properly. Fergus had to come out and snake it (finding no evidence of anything we had done to clog it). We also asked him how to get the Netflix to work. He seemed unaware that Netflix was available on the tv even though that is listed as an amenity for the home. After his confusion over the email and password for the service, we just gave up and decided to forego Netflix.
But towards the end of our trip, things got even trickier. Our checkout date was known months in advance and we had an arrangement in writing to have the refundable deposit returned back to us in USD in cash the day we left. That did not happen. Fergus was traveling and was going to get his son to meet us the morning we left to give him the keys and get our deposit back. I received an email from Fergus the evening prior stating that his son would meet us but would be unable to bring us the money because of bank withdrawal limits. His son did not show up at the meeting time so we left after 15 minutes so we could get breakfast and catch the ferry. Fergus refunded the deposit via PayPal (not our agreement).
I write this so future renters know what to expect or so Fergus changes how he manages the home.
We enjoyed this peaceful home, great for a relaxing getaway yet close enough to downtown Victoria to take in the sights and shopping.
We will definitely come back if we are ever in Victoria again!
Home had everything we needed, close to everything, would stay there again!
My family and I decided on a last minute getaway. Fergus was very accommodating of our last minutes travel plans and kept in excellent communication with me as they came together. The house had everything we needed and even a playground immediately behind the house in a school yard. The first day we had no wheels, but still found a plaza convenient enough to walk to for groceries. We spent some time talking with our host and found him very personable and friendly. When my husband and I decided on some alone time kayaking, Fergus' son babysat our children. Though they challenged him, he did a great job and they were very happy and asked about him for the rest of our stay.
The distance from the downtown was great, maybe 15 minutes. The neighborhood was quiet and the rental very affordable.
My family stayed at this rental for a week during March Spring Break. The house is small but well appointed and very comfy. Close to lots of shopping and amenities and about 10 min to downtown. Garden is really lovely. Owner was very helpful and easy to deal with. Would definitely stay here again. Very family friendly.
The house is conveniently located from most of the attractions (10 - 20 minutes drive to most places) and shops/groceries. We stayed here with kids/toddlers and found easy to squeeze in after nap between morning/evening site seeing! The house was also fully equipped with all the necessary for the stay as well. There is a huge backyard, deck, and small walk way connecting to school playground with play structure.
The house is multilevel with 2 bedroom, kitchen, family room, and one bad on first floor. The lower level has an additional room, laundry, 1 bedroom, and a bath. There is some amount of stairs getting into the house as well (nothing unmanageable) but just stating if you are travelling with anyone who would find it hard to navigate stairs.
