On the waterfront of Narragansett Bay, Cedar Cove Cottage offers weekly and nightly getaways, accessible by car, boat, or bicycle. Two separate apartment units of two bedrooms each, plus waterside deck, picnic pergola, fire pit, private yard, and private beach welcome families interested in the beach, boating, the outdoors, and life by the water. Located on the protected waters of Blue Bill Cove, Cedar Cove Cottage comes with kayaks, beach, boats, and steps down into the water. The surrounding Island Park community offers six restaurants, two large public beaches, three marinas and a playground, all within walking distance. Six minutes away in Bristol you’ll find a classic American town with museums, gourmet restaurants, and cultural activities. Eleven miles away is Newport with its mansions and yachting.
Upstairs at Cedar Cove commands an unobstructed view over the cove, with accommodations for five in two bedrooms, plus two more in convertible couch. A full bath and eat-in kitchen complement the 20-foot long living room. Fully furnished, with private entrance, Overlook serves as a cozy aerie and quiet place to work and relax.
A dozen cottages surround our little cove, protected from wind and waves, more like a lake than an ocean. Connected to the Narragansett Bay and the Atlantic, the cove is full of small boats, shellfish, swimming, birds, and wildlife.
First constructed in 1925, the cottage sleeps nine in two separate units, Overlook (upstairs) and Beachside (downstairs). Each includes a full kitchen, bath, and living room. Beachside also includes Chart Room with a panoramic view of the Cove.
Five steps take you from the cottage to the quiet sandy beach, where there’s room for sunbathing, sandcastles, and volleyball. A gentle slope and calm waters make the beach ideal for young children. Shellfish abound. Cedar trees block the afternoon sun in the grotto corner of the beach.
Five kayaks, a rowboat, a 17-foot Bristol Skiff, and an inflatable windsurfer make up the Cedar Cove Cottage fleet. All come with life jackets (required), oars, and paddles (recommended).
This vine-covered outdoor space is where we eat dinner most of the summer. Protected from the sun, but open to the sea breezes, the tables in the pergola seat eight.
100 square feet of beachfront outdoor space facing the water, with wood decking, gas grill, and furniture provide room to sit, cook, eat, talk, tell stories, and watch the aquatic action on Cedar Cove.
A grassy space for relaxing or playing, with Adirondack chairs, firepit, tool shed, flowers, gnomes, and birdbaths, overlooks the water and is fenced from the street and neighbors for privacy.
A laundry room with washer, dryer, and storage on the main floor is convenient and available to both units.
We're a recently retired couple. We've both been in education since the early 70's. Jim worked mostly in higher ed (Boston University and Hunter College) while Kathi focused on K-12 as a teacher and principal. Our current work involves consulting with schools and universities around the world as they seek to better use modern technologies in meaningful ways.
We split our time between wintering at Crossett Hill Lodge in Duxbury, Vermont (rentable year-round) and Cedar Cove in Portsmouth, RI in the summer.
We sail out of Bristol throughout the summer on our 38' yawl (charters available!).
Kathi Lengel purchased this cottage in 2015
When it was time to scale back a bit in our work, we looked for a rentable waterfront property that would allow us to swim and boat everyday. Opening our two units to renters has meant a steady stream of very interesting people since we started renting in the summer of 2015.
This house drew us in because it was owned by the same family (the Pedros) since it was built and has many unique features from Grandpa Jesse's woodworking to Grandma Ada's gardens. There's nothing like sitting around the fire pit on a summer evening, listening to the birds and watching the stars.
Comfortable, clean. Well cared for house. We had everything we needed. Large living room for group activities. Kathi is a very gracious host. Quiet and safe area. Grilling on the deck, singing around the fire pit, evening walk to the beach, time on the water in the kayaks, paddle boats, quiet time on the deck or garden and many more activities but ran out of time. We will go back given another chance with more family and friends for another great experience. Great base for touring historic Providence and even Plymouth. Thanks Kathi and Bill for sharing your home.
We stayed at Cedar Cove Cottage for two nights renting both units while attending a wedding nearby. The house and location were perfect. The downstairs Chart Room, the deck or the lawn were perfect spots for sitting and catching up with family. All had a gorgeous view of the water and herons fishing along the shore. Our granddaughter loved watching and holding the many fiddler crabs and swimming out to the float. The water on the cove is a bit murky but was certainly refreshing on a hot day. There is a nice sand beach a short distance away. The house is at the beginning of a quiet side street but a 30 second walk from several restaurants. We were amazed that despite having the restaurants so close, the house was VERY quiet. My wife is a very light sleeper and the only thing that awakened her in the night was our 7 month old grandson. The house was clean with plenty of sheets and towels for the extra people in our large group. The owners were very responsive to our questions before arrival and responded immediately to answer questions upon arrival that I should have known the answer to because they were in the material they had sent us. While the air conditioning was not necessary for most of our time there because of the breezes off the water, it was greatly appreciated the first afternoon when it was stifling outside. Thank you, Kathi, for a wonderful stay. Will definitely stay again if we are ever in the area.
We rented for a 4 day weekend and loved it. Clean. Kathy was very accommodating. Children and Adults had a blast in the water. Kayaks, row boats, a raft, fishing boat. Kept us busy all day.
*It was a hot weekend and the 1 air conditioner could not keep the entire upstairs apartment cool.
The Cedar Cove Cottage was a great location. With the ability to go on a morning kayak trip every morning. Kathi was very helpful and it was a great place to set up camp for trips into Newport, but quiet and away from all the touristy noise so it was really peaceful.
My girlfriends and I just returned home after an amazing weekend at Cedar Cove. Kathi and Jim were wonderful hosts, assuring that we had all the information we needed to have a great weekend. The linens and beds were extremely comfortable (look for the bunk bed ladder UNDER the bed!) and our interactions with the owners were brief but lovely. I can't say enough wonderful things about the place. We will definitely be returning!
Kathi and Jim made our stay more memorable than we could have expected. From the moment we arrived, we felt welcome and cared for. The upstairs unit was plenty big enough for our family of four -- especially since we came to experience the outdoors. We enjoyed having a kitchen overlooking the cove where we cooked simple breakfasts and sipped tea and coffee. The availability of kayaks and other gear to enjoy the island is incredibly generous of Kathi and Jim and was one of the primary reasons we chose this spot. The location is a little off-the-beaten-path, which we liked, but not too far of a drive to Bristol or Newport. We felt at home very quickly. Our phenomenal week was topped off by a sailing race with Jim on his sailboat under a full moon! Highly recommend!
The surrounding Island Park community offers six restaurants, two large public beaches, three marinas and a playground, all within walking distance. Six minutes away in Bristol you’ll find a classic American town with museums, gourmet restaurants, and cultural activities.
