About George

We love the Asheville area and all it has to offer. It's hard to pick a favorite craft brew when there are so many great ones made locally to choose from. You hike on the parkway during the day and enjoy the lively downtown seen in the evening. Whitewater rafting, zip lining, fishing and so much more are conveniently in Asheville or a short drive away. George Vanderbilt and E.W. Grove recognized Asheville's uniqueness, beauty, and clean mountain air over a century ago. We feel privileged to be able to call Asheville home.

Why George chose Smoky Mountains

This home offers a convenient location to get pretty much anywhere in Asheville within a 2 to 15 minute drive. The homey comfortable and cozy feel offers the opportunity to live more like a local than a tourist. The pillow top King and queen mattresses offer a good nights sleep leaving you nice and rested for your next day's adventure.

Great house, quiet neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

I was in town with a few old friends who were a little bit budget-conscious, and this ended up being the perfect place for us to stay. The house is clean, well-kept and has plenty of sleeping space, plus the keycode lock setup made figuring out logistics extremely easy.

It's also not too far from downtown, so for dinner, brewery tours and other activities it was highly convenient. All in all, a great experience and a place I would absolutely stay again.

Charming in a way, but that depends...

  • 3 of 5

If you need multiple bedrooms, have a dog (we didn't), and are just looking for an affordable home base to visit Asheville from, this rental is a pretty good choice; the location is decent (if driving); and George (the owner) seems like the type of guy that would do anything to make his renters happy. However, if you are looking for super clean, comfy, modern, and ideally located (within walking distance) to anything other than the soccer fields, the Nature Center, and the brewery, you might want to check out some other options. After staying here for five nights, we grew found of the quiet porch and our ability to walk to the soccer fields every night. The neighborhood has it's quirks - i.e.: the razor ribbon barbed wire that is strung over the length of the Asheville Nature Center, and the occasional vagrants on the street (we had to call the cops), but after getting used the location we decided that it was far better than our initial impression. You can relax and have fun here, but don't expect anything more than a small, totally 80's-style house in a funky neighborhood that is just close enough to town to make it worth considering. With some furniture, carpet, and comfort upgrades, George could turn this into a 4-star rental.

Owner's Response: After reading this review I was alarmed that the police were called so I reached out to Bruce to find out what happened. He said there was a van parked in the Nature Center parking area and they had been hanging out for a really long time. With all of the kids that come to the Nature Center, Pool, and Soccer Fields I agree that he made the right choice to call the police. I believe this is an isolated incident since neighbors (a family with young kids) have told us how much they love the neighborhood. I am not sure why the Nature Center has the barbed wire coils on top of the fence. Is it to protect the people from the animals or the animals from the people or is it even necessary? The home was built in 2003 and does not have high end furnishing. It is a comfortable home in a convenient location where family and friends vacation together at a good value. Bruce and his family travel a lot and he was kind enough to send me an email with some great suggestions and recommendations, of which we have already begun working on some them. I enjoyed speaking with Bruce as he seemed genuinely interested in helping us improve the property. We spoke of all the the things he liked about the home and area like walking to the brewery, soccer fields, etc. and that once they settled in it was better than their initial impression. At the end of our conversation he did say he would consider staying again if they were back in the area.

Anniversary Retreat

  • 4 of 5

We loved staying in George's home in Asheville, NC. It was a short ride to shopping, restaurants, and activities. We had everything we needed upon arrival to start our week's stay. The front porch and hot tub were relaxing and peaceful. We enjoyed easy trips to hiking trails and just relaxing at the house. We appreciated being able to bring our two yorkies' and the tranquility of the area. Watch out for bear sightings when walking in the area, which we were informed are common in Asheville. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a clean and comfortable home away from home.

A+++

Great house, great location, great owner to deal with. We would definitely stay here again. The only issue concerning the house, was the much warmer upstairs than the downstairs, as it is all on the same system.
