About George

We love the Asheville area and all it has to offer. It's hard to pick a favorite craft brew when there are so many great ones made locally to choose from. You hike on the parkway during the day and enjoy the lively downtown seen in the evening. Whitewater rafting, zip lining, fishing and so much more are conveniently in Asheville or a short drive away. George Vanderbilt and E.W. Grove recognized Asheville's uniqueness, beauty, and clean mountain air over a century ago. We feel privileged to be able to call Asheville home.

Why George chose Smoky Mountains

This home offers a convenient location to get pretty much anywhere in Asheville within a 2 to 15 minute drive. The homey comfortable and cozy feel offers the opportunity to live more like a local than a tourist. The pillow top King and queen mattresses offer a good nights sleep leaving you nice and rested for your next day's adventure.

Great house, quiet neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

I was in town with a few old friends who were a little bit budget-conscious, and this ended up being the perfect place for us to stay. The house is clean, well-kept and has plenty of sleeping space, plus the keycode lock setup made figuring out logistics extremely easy.

It's also not too far from downtown, so for dinner, brewery tours and other activities it was highly convenient. All in all, a great experience and a place I would absolutely stay again.

Not as expected

  • 1 of 5

Recently, I booked this house for my 30th. I was considering not writing a review at all, but since the owner has rated us as 1-star travelers, I feel it is my duty to let others know about our experience.

My husband and 2 friends arrived at the house first on Thursday evening, while the rest of our group was en route with our two dogs, arriving close to midnight. Upon entering the house, my husband came upon a large pile of dog feces in the master bedroom, which had clearly been on the carpet for several days, as it was dry and crusty. There were also a variety of small dead bugs in the master bedroom and bathroom, in addition to blood stains on the master carpet. I wish I was making this up. My husband texted the owner a photo of the dog feces, and to the owner's credit, he did offer to ameliorate the situation that evening. However, by the time we had settled in, it was too late to want to deal with it. We resolved to take care of it the next morning, although my husband cleaned up the dog poop on his own. There was no carpet cleaner in the house; his only choice was to cover it with a paper towel and attempt to avoid the other soiled areas in the master bedroom. Clearly, no cleaning crew had been there prior to our arrival.

The following morning, one person in our group took a shower upstairs and ran out of hot water in 5 minutes. Moreover, the shower upstairs did not drain, resulting in our friend standing in 6 inches of water. The toilet upstairs also leaked water onto the floor. At that point, we were sufficiently fed up with the state of this place and had no desire to stay another hour, much less another night.

We called the owner to alert him of our dissatisfaction with the state of the property. We were extremely polite and hoping to come to a mutual agreement where we would leave peaceably and recoup the money we had already paid for Friday and Saturday nights, willing to pay for our stay Thursday night. He was uncooperative and refused to accept responsibility for the condition of the home, even blaming our dogs for the old poop on the carpet. As a result, we called our credit card company to initiate a refund and will be seeking other action if necessary to recoup the rest of our money. We cleaned the house before we left, leaving it in better condition (with the minimal supplies we had available to us) than it was in when we arrived. If you're 18, and you don't care about things like this, great place for you. Otherwise, AVOID

Owner's Response: Our goal is to do whatever is reasonably necessary for our guest's comfort and enjoyment. We simply ask for an opportunity to do so. The guests sent a picture of the dog feces which had to come from one of their 3 dogs since the prior guests didn't have any pets and it was not there when the cleaning crew cleaned for their arrival. It didn't matter that we felt that they simply may not have noticed one of their dogs relieving themselves after a trip in the car while they were bringing in luggage, groceries, etc. At the time, we felt they honestly believed their dogs were not responsible. We never accused them and we didn't dwell on the source, we simply offered to come immediately, or at their convenience, with a carpet cleaning machine and clean the carpet. At this time this was the only complaint. The next morning we received a text stating the upstairs shower was not draining and the toilet was leaking just minutes before we received their phone call stating that they had initiated a chargeback with their credit card company (which they did) and demanded for us to issue a full refund on our side in order to make it easier for them to get their money or they would post a negative review. Until this point we thought they were simply calling to set a time for us to come by and take care of these quick and easy fixes. We again offered to take care of all issues with the property at their convenience while they were there or while they were gone and that we would be quick about it. None of the other items listed in the review were mentioned until we told them that we would be glad to come by and remedy all of their complaints, but we would not be blackmailed into a refund. It took us about 30 minutes to clean the carpet, adjust the toilet, which simply had a drip in the tank area (not on the floor), and open a slow drain that did drain, but had a small amount of water while the water was running(about 1/4 inch). We found a dead moth in a window sill, but no blood stains anywhere.

A+++

Great house, great location, great owner to deal with. We would definitely stay here again. The only issue concerning the house, was the much warmer upstairs than the downstairs, as it is all on the same system.

Cozy house in quiet neighborhood, convenient to everything

  • 4 of 5

Our family gathered here to celebrate Christmas in Asheville, which is as close as we could get to a midpont between our far flung homes (VA, GA, and AL). The neighborhood is quiet and unassuming. The house was clean and well stocked, with plenty of room for the 7 of us. We especially enjoyed walking to the park and to the Highland Brewery. The hot tub was a plus. We appreciated that the house was pet friendly. Would recommend this property and would book again.

EXCELLENT VACATION

  • 5 of 5

Very well kept two story house with easy access to main highways and close to Asheville. The hot tub was the kids (6 and 8 years old) favorite place. Will rent again next time we go back to Asheville.

Fun, close, nice little house

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of friends in town for a wedding at The Crest. The location was great, short ride to downtown (10 mins) and short distance to everything else as well. The hot tub was great for the evenings. The house was a perfect place to stay for a wedding, super clean and comfy. We would definitely stay here again and recommend!
