About Martha Holmes

My husband and I (Jonathan and Martha) currently live in Los Altos, California (about 30 miles south of San Francisco).. We have lived and worked in this area for 30 years and raised our son who is now 20 and in college . We all fell in love with the Blaine area when visiting my mother and brother who have lived there for 7 years. We finally decided to buy a vacation home and the minute we walked into this one we knew it was perfect. Jonathan is planning to retire soon and we hope to split out time between Blaine and Los Altos. It is a wonderful little town and beautiful home.

Even though we are not "on site" we have many local contacts and I am available by phone all the time if you need anything

Martha Holmes purchased this house in 2014

Great house, great location

  • 5 of 5

This property has a superb location on the bay, and has been designed to maximize that location. The great-room has a wall of windows, bringing the outdoors inside. The deck was a favorite place to sit, read, eat and drink. BBQ steaks, ribs and salmon were the perfect way to cap a day of golf for the four of us. The kitchen was better equipped than most rentals I have had, and the house itself was spotless. Dealing with the owner rather than a manager or agency was a pleasure, Martha was responsive and helpful, and if we had any issues (which we did not) I feel she would have not hesitated to resolve them.

Best ever

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this beautiful house for 2 weeks. We have rented countless VRBO's and I think this was my favorite so far. I am a clean freak and I was so comfortable here. You don't feel like your sitting on a rental couch, you feel like your in someone's clean home. The house is decorated tastefully with comfy furniture. We spent most of our time out on the deck looking at the water. Blaine is a sleepy little town but Bellingham is close as is Canada. There was a grocery store very close and a few restaurants but we usually cooked at home. The kitchen was fully stocked and had lots of spices and everyday things you need. Our only complaint were the beds in the guest rooms, they were twin beds pushed together with thin mattresses but we survived. We would definitely rent here again. Martha was wonderful to work with. Thanks for sharing your beautiful home.

The property is in a great location, but it is in need of some upgrades.

  • 3 of 5

We stayed for 4 weeks, so we got to know this property. Overall the house and furniture are very good. If you are going to stay in the summer you should know that there is no air conditioning and it gets very hot in the afternoon as the house faces west. Even with 7 fans running it was hard to keep the house under 80. When we arrived, the 2 ovens were so dirty that we would not use them. Martha did send some over to clean. A master suite sink would not drain, but I managed to clean out all of the gunk and got it working. The refrigerator water never did work. Only a few good restaurants in the area. Great view from this location and nice layout of the house. The property could use some upgrades such as some pots and pans. There are plenty but we had to scrub most to get them clean. Maybe a little pricey for the condition of property.

Owner's Response: I am sorry Bruce did not enjoy his stay, there was a heat wave during this stay that had not happened in 100 years, most homes in Washington do not have AC. AC is not noted in the description and I do tell guests ahead of time. As for the ovens they are cleaned once a month..the previous guest must have "exploded" something in them, and I immediately sent someone to clean them, and they now check the ovens every time someone leaves. (They are self cleaning) There is plenty of kitchenware, some of the pots are older but easily cleaned in the dishwasher. I will replace some as soon as possible. I have over twenty 5 star reviews and this shocked me, I did not know. Everyone else has always commented on how clean and beautiful the home is. I did not know about the sink, it did drain but slowly, I would have sent someone right away to fix it. The daily/weekly and monthly rates are very very reasonable for a 3bed/3bath waterfront home in the area. To post a 3 star review for these reasons does not seem fair. Staying a month with a few issues can happen at the best of hotels. I do appreciate input from guests and always try to listen and improve the house, and I will continue to do so.

Almost better than the description...

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this property for 3 nights May 2017. A family get together with young children. The property is exactly as described....if not better. We were concerned about enough seating for 6 adults, and were pleased to see a new large comfortable sectional couch in the living room. Perfect to lounge in and chat. The view is amazing, with nothing impeding it. The listing says across the road from the ocean, but the road is a simple gravel (trail) and we only saw a vehicle on it once every few hours. There was good internet. The house was very clean. The kitchen was well stocked with appliances and dishes, there were lots of towels for the bathrooms, and access to the property is easy. We would stay here again.
