Japanese-inspired Cottage With Garden Views. Comfortable Queen Bed
Welcome to North Star Cottage! Imagine yourself in a cozy storybook cottage with fir floors, shiplap ceilings and lots of custom wood touches. There’s a wonderfully comfortable bed, a well-supplied kitchen, and a wicker loveseat on a covered porch where you can look out into the unique country garden. Or, if you prefer, go and sit your own private garden: there’s sun beside the roses or shade under a big cedar. You’ll be comfortable here. Discover walking trails right from the property, which backs onto a park. It’s easy to get to everywhere on the island from your central location.
The one room cottage and surrounding gardens have been created by a professional carpenter and a passionate gardener. It is sunny, quiet and private. Guests call it, ""a sanctuary." In the summer, you'll appreciate the overhead ceiling fan.
You'll find the kitchen fully equipped with complimentary touches like an assortment of teas and good olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
The linens on the queen bed are luxurious. There’s comfortable seating, a reading light, a stereo, and a library. For those coming for a writing retreat, there’s a typing chair and a custom made desk.
When you want to go for a walk, you don’t even have to take a car! There are a number of trails accessible right from the property. The main house is a hundred feet from the cottage and the owners live on site. They are available to answer questions.
Outside of the cottage, on the porch, is a Weber gas barbeque. On the other side is a comfy wicker loveseat. There’s a private outdoor seating area with glass-topped table and chairs.
The property is fenced so it is safe for a quiet, friendly dog.
It takes two minutes to drive to the ocean at Medicine Beach, to the swimming area at Magic Lake, or the Slow Coast Cafe above Medicine Beach. It's five minutes drive to the Driftwood Center to buy groceries, fifteen minutes to the ferry, the library, the Nu-to-You thrift store, or Philly's Diner at Hope Bay.
We are eco-friendly, with a small footprint on a large lot. The property has a pond and a wetland. Plantings have been designed by a landscape architect. Many are bird and butterfly friendly, and fragrant. We use micro-irrigation and water-saving fixtures.

About Garnet Coburn
Garnet designed and built the cottage and the (slightly) bigger main house himself. Now retired, he was a carpenter for forty years. Zoe is responsible for the gardens. As Garnet was building the main house, she was planting trees. She is a writer, a retired university professor, and a proud crew member of the Pender Island Search and Rescue boat, Station 20. Kira, our Golden Doodle, is responsible for general goofiness around the place.
Garnet Coburn purchased this Cottage in 2007
Why Garnet Coburn chose Southern Gulf Islands
We bought this as an undeveloped lot with a vision in mind. This property is south-facing, so we get lots of sun. It's level, though it's level in three different plateaus. Most of the lots on Pender are very steep. We wanted to have one-storey, low to the ground Japanese-feeling buildings. We loved the amount of light this place gets, and the privacy. It was also important to have a place that allowed for a garden. The level areas allowed this. It's been an enormous pleasure to over the years, bring our vision of this place closer to fruition.
What makes this Cottage unique
It's parkland directly below us. It meant a lot to us that we could head off with the dog for an hour-long walk without taking a vehicle anywhere. We also fell in love with our sunny clearing on the edge of a cliff and with the sight of the fir trees etched against the sky. The buildings are oriented south to take maximum advantage to the light. Guests tell us they enjoy how peaceful it is and how relaxed they feel hanging out on the loveseat on the porch overlooking the gardens. The Weber gas bbq is much-used by guests. You'll find North Star cottage very central for exploring the island. Travellers with dogs will be glad to know that our place is fenced and your dog is quite safe in the yard. House Rules No smoking in the cottage. Please make sure to park in the parking spot and leave the driveway clear. One of your hosts is a first responder with the marine search and rescue unit and may need to respond to a callout. Please check with us if you have a pet. It must be able to get along with other dogs, not menace people, and be quiet. For people who bring dogs, especially rescue dogs, be aware that unless you can guarantee your dog will remain silent, we will require you to take your animal with you on outings. We absolutely cannot have a howling dog in the cottage.

Lovely setting. Clean, cozy and well equipped.
This was our second time staying at this relaxing retreat. It’s the perfect home base while exploring Pender Island. We’ll be back.:)
Lovely cottage, had everything we needed. Will definitely stay there again!
What a lovely cottage. It's the perfect Pender Island getaway - very clean, very cozy, with a warm feel, and situated on a gorgeous property. Dog-friendly too! Garnet and Zoe are gracious and welcoming hosts. Thank you so much!
Lovely setting and very private
Loved my two night stay in the cottage. Super easy check in and very private. Cute and cozy spot to explore Pender with your dog. Would definitely recommend this spot
Thanks Chelsey, glad you and Bug had a good time here. Cheers Garnet
This was a great self-contained cottage with a really nice little kitchen, very thoughtfully appointed. A great base to explore Pender Island with my dog. The owners were kind and quick to respond.
Very cozy place
My wife and I had a great stay at the cottage with our dog. Thanks!!
Pender Island in the southern Gulf Islands is located between Vancouver and Victoria. It's a 40 minute ferry trip from Victoria and two hours from Vancouver.
The island is hilly and treed with open rolling fields. Residents tend to be very ecologically conscious, with a high number of artists, writers, and craftspeople.
Many walking trails are accessible right from North Star Cottage. There are also great hikes and beaches to explore. Pender Island has the most public access to the ocean of any of the Gulf Islands. Trails are well marked. It’s possible to rent kayaks at several locations. Gowland Beach on South Pender is a must-visit.
A trip to the Farmer’s Market on Saturday is always worthwhile; there are many fine artisans and delicious fresh-made treats available. There are good restaurants on the island. On Fridays and Saturdays, a trip to Nu to You, the local community thrift store is excellent fun; you never know what treasure you might walk away with!
