Great historic house

  • 5 of 5

Historic house that is well preserved and well equipped. The rambling floor plan includes two walled courtyards a formal dining room and a grand living room with a massive fireplace. You feel as though you are inhabiting a period film. Water pressure is adequate, security seems good, the house has a washer and dryer.

Casa Blanca is situated just a couple of blocks from the main plaza in Antigua. The only drawback is that Calle 7 is kind of noisy and the traffic noise can echo into the house. This may be the case for a lot of houses in Antigua though as the city is entirely paved and constructed of hard echoey surfaces.

The owner and managers are attentive, responsive, and local.

I highly recommend this historic and interesting house.

Close to Antigua's center; Colonial-style home that needs a few upgrades

  • 4 of 5

The home is a few blocks from Antigua's center square, on a busy street used by a regular stream of buses leaving the city. With the exception of the second floor master bedroom, all other rooms directly lead to the home's two courtyards. The decor is a mixture of antiques, Spanish, and 1970's contemporary styles. The master bath, for example, is lined with Spanish-style tiles and the sink and toilet are black. Owner Jose and real estate manager George are pleasant and responsive. I listed for them some suggested changes to the property to make the stay more comfortable, and they attested that they would be working on those issues after I left, including the replacement of linens and mattress.

- replace poli/cotton bed linens with 100% cotton sheets (the master bed sheet had pills giving the sensation of sleeping on sand)

- Master mattress is worn, and you can feel the springs (I did not try the beds in the other rooms)

- replace the relatively small and worn bath towels with full-size cotton towels

- thoroughly clean the home prior to tenant arriving (dusty from volcano ash, mold in coffee filter, stains on clothes washer rim, etc.)

- fix door to first floor bathroom as it stays ajar because it is too wide to shut

- add larger fans as interior rooms are stuffy and the bedroom on first floor leading to the street is loud from passing buses

- change the description of the home, deleting "second balcony", as the only way to get to the "second balcony is to climb on furniture, go out a window, and stand on a roof deck with out furniture or lights.

- the clothes dryer belt broke when I first used the machine, and the home owner immediately called a repair service-- he asked that I stay and let into the home the repair people to fix the machine and said that they are trustworthy. (frankly as my family and I did not want to leave cameras, passports and other valuables in the home alone with repairmen, I stayed for hours while the family toured the town. The home owner or agent should have stayed there for me to enjoy my short time in Antigua.)

I did not understand the $40 cash payment to the realtor at check-in for "electrical use" during a three night stay as the home has no A/C and the light bulbs seemed to be energy efficient.

Overall, nice home in a convenient location. With a few minor changes the home can be much more comfortable. (I have photos but was unable to post them with my review)

Owner's Response: Thank you for the 4 out of 5-star review of our vacation home, and also thank you for acknowledging our rapid response to your numerous requests made during your short 3-night stay. Our responsiveness is one reason we remain one of Antigua’s most popular vacation homes, year after year. The house’s location - just 2 blocks from Antigua’s Central Park - and the beauty, size & centuries-old history of the house are also important factors in the house’s ongoing popularity with guests - many of whom return frequently. Always seeking to improve our guests’ experience, we appreciate your input. As we discussed, we rotate new sheets & towels into the house’s inventory every 12 to 15 months. This occurred right after your departure – as did the replacement of the mattress. As you know – but do not mention in your review – you received a significant, partial REFUND from us for this inconvenience. As for the house’s cleanliness - it can be challenging to clean such a large, sprawling house. Sometimes the cleaning lady does miss something. Cleaning for your visit, however, was made even more difficult because you arrived less than two weeks after the tragic, deadly (1,000+ people perished) - and messy – major volcanic eruption of Fuego, which is less than 10 miles from the house. Antigua is still cleaning up ash! We are constantly updating and upgrading Casa Blanca and we will note the other suggestions you have made when doing this. We will, however, continue to advertise that the house has 2 terraces (and 2 brand new chaises to be used on the terrace - located in the large central garden downstairs). The 2nd terrace is NOT accessible only via an upstairs window. There is a separate access point outside the upstairs Master Bedroom. You were directed you to use the window (for your safety) because a banister is currently being replaced for the second access point to the ‘2nd’ terrace. As for your complaint that you wanted someone on the Casa Blanca team to stay at the house while the clothes dryer was being fixed - we would have happily accommodated that request, but you did not mention that was your desire – so we cannot respond to a guest request that is not made. For groups (yours totaled 7) - we must charge an electric surcharge as clearly stated in the listing for the house. This $40 fee should be no surprise to you. I suspect we will not be seeing you at Casa Blanca again, and that is fine. We wish you all the best in your future.

Wonderful Vacation Home in the Heart of Antigua !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 5 of 5

What a Wonderful Home. This is the place to stay in Antigua. Only two blocks from the main plaza, this home is the largest home you will ever stay in during your life !! I measured the home at 5,500 sq.ft. It has three outdoor patios, two downstairs and one off the master bedroom upstairs. You can watch an active volcano from the upper patio all day long if you like. There is a large complete kitchen and four bedrooms. Also a family room and the largest living room on earth. My family loved the place; it is 120 feet long from one end of the place to the other; unbelievable. Also, for history buffs, the house was built in 1743 and is one of the few still standing homes from that era. The kitchen has a cupola that has to be over 20 feet high from the floor to the top of the cupola. The most incredible part of the stay was meeting the owner, Jose, and the magnificent Property Manager, George, and his sidekick, Dahr. George and Dahr set us up with private shuttles from Guatemala City to the house and back to the City. Also, the most memorable part of the visit was our 6 hour countryside tour with Dahr for only $150.00. All I can say is my family loved this house and the Service we received from George and his staff !! You will too !!! Robert Palmer, San Diego, California

Excellent house in the heart of Antigua

  • 5 of 5

First, George and Dahr (his assistant) were extremely cordial, staying in touch by e-mail and asking if we needed anything. They even let us borrow a local cell phone. This alone deserves high praise.

The house itself was much more than we needed. It is big, very big. Two inner courtyards with their fountains, lush vegetation, three bedrooms, one huge living room, a dining room... The pictures in the website are a good reflection of what the house actually looks like. The two most amazing things about the house were one of those courtyards, where we would just relax at the end of the day, and the views from the bedroom and terrace upstairs. Waking up to see the Volcán Agua directly in front of those windows was a luxury.

Location wise, the house is two blocks from Parque Central, about a five minute walk. The rest of the city landmarks are within a ten minute walk radius, including the main grocery store, La Bodegona. The street where the house is has quite a lot of traffic and although some of it (buses) can be heard from the inside, it does not become a problem. I guess it is the downside of living so close to the city center but again, for us it was not an issue beyond the second night.

Lastly, our three children (11, 9 and 7) had a great time exploring, playing hide and seek and watching TV at night in their own bedrooms, something they don't get to do at home.

Clearly, this house contributed to a memorable vacation in Antigua.

Beautiful colonial home just blocks from the Central Park.

  • 4 of 5

We have visited La Antigua over 20 times, staying both in private homes and in hotels. We found the home to be very lovely and spacious. It has two courtyards for enjoying the afternoon sun. The home is just a short walk to the Central Park in the center of town. We were able to walk to our favorite restaurants quite easily. The Master bedroom overlooks the Volcano Agua and there is a rooftop terrace for relaxing. The only reason I could not rate this home a 5* is because it is located on a main road and bus route causing quite a bit of noise starting at 4am. We did get used to the noise after a couple of days, though. We will be back in La Antigua every year or two and would be happy to book this home again. My entire family thoroughly enjoyed the visit and the home itself. My Mother flew in to spend Thanksgiving day with us and fell in love with this old home and its architecture. My daughters have asked to book this home when we return. Truly an Antiguan beauty.

Central beliggenhed og mega stort hus

  • 5 of 5
