Nice place but needs some work
We spent 4 nights at this cabin in middle February with a group of 8 adults and 5 children. We liked the location of the cabin being very secluded but also not far from terry peak or the town, make sure you have a 4 wheels drive if coming in the winter, very steep hill coming up to the cabin. we had a lot of fun hanging out in the cabin which is roomy and has plenty of space for the kids to play downstairs with the ping pong and pool table. the cabin is on a big hill so we enjoyed sledding outside one of the days.
The cabin definitely has room for improvement.
We arrived around 7 when it was dark out, the outside lights walking to the side door to enter were not on and there is a huge window well with no cover on it in the walkway. my father-in-law fell half way in and luckily caught himself, he scraped up his leg really bad but this could have been a lot worse especially if one of the little kids with us would have fallen in.
The cabin was right at 60 degrees when we got there, it has baseboard water heat and took about 24 hours to warm the cabin up even when we lit the fireplace.
The hot tub cover was so water logged that it took 2 of us to open, the rails to open it up all the way broke because the cover was so heavy. so we could only have the cover open half way.
The air hockey table is in very rough shape and the jukebox doesn't work, the coffee maker takes about 20-30 minutes to make a pot. They do worn you to bring paper towels, toilet paper and garbage bags which I think they could supply a lot more of that then they do.
But overall we had a great time and enjoyed our stay here, just wished they would take a little bit better care of the place.
We want to let you know that this cabin is under new ownership as of April 20, 2018. Guest's feedback was taken very seriously and all of these items (and more) have been fixed/replaced. We've put a lot of hard work into getting this cabin in tip top shape and are very excited for guests to enjoy the updates and new additions! We love our new cabin and we hope our guests will too! :)
Good places for families to spread out
We recently spent three nights at this property - six adults and five children. The children, ages 5 to 9 thoroughly enjoyed the air hockey, ping pong and billiards tables in the basement. They also watched movies each night after a fun day of skiing. This is the fourth rental place we have rented in the last five years in this area so I am not a novice at renting. The house was ready for us when we arrived, was adequately clean, and barely stocked with necessities like garbage bags, toilet paper, and paper towels. You are informed in advance that if you have a large party and are staying a longer time, you may need to bring extras of these things. My thought is if you are renting out a five bedroom, three bath home, you should be expecting larger groups and I don’t think 3 nights is an extended stay - in fact, I believe it is the minimum. We had one roll of paper towels, one garbage bag and someone had to come upstairs the first day and borrow toilet paper from another bathroom until we could buy some additional supplies. That being said, it didn’t stop us from having a good time, it was just aggravating.
The house has an eclectic collection of things in it. There are many unique things but they somehow have a hard time going together. The climbing wall that starts in the basement and extends up the living room wall on the main floor doesn’t fit with the cabin theme and is not allowed to be used. It simply detracts from the ambience of the home. The home has also seen some rough use that has not been fixed - a hole in the wall where the side door has been opened too hard. The big kitchen table has a glass top with stained glass panels underneath but some stained glass pieces have been broken out and there was a dead fly in the middle that you looked at as you ate.
It is important to note that it is a necessity (as stated) to have an AWD or 4WD vehicle for this VRBO. We had three vehicles that met that qualification and still two got stuck the last night coming home from skiing. It was 37 degrees, tires warm and snow was slippery so they had to block the tires (to keep the vehicles from sliding down the hill) and wait a half hour for conditions to change. Then with some judicious pushing and driving, both vehicles finished making it up the steep hill.
Overall - the home worked as it should - space was good - we enjoyed our time together. We were simply missing the ambience we have enjoyed at other rentals in the past.
We want to let you know that this cabin is under new ownership as of April 20, 2018. We've added sleeping space, some new appliances, replaced the hot tub with a huge one and updated some decor :).
We can't control the weather, but we are working on getting the road fixed asap so it will be easier to get around in ALL conditions.
Thanks again for staying!
Our group was comprised of six adults (three adult couples including grandpa and grandma) and seven children (ranging in ages from 4 - 16). Families from Huron, SD and Denver, CO met at this cabin for the Thanksgiving holiday. We arrived on Wednesday night and all of the towels were dirty and piled in the downstairs bathroom. I texted the property manager immediately to let her know and she offered to send someone out to do laundry. It was no problem, we could do it ourselves. However, the washer AND dryer were full so we had several loads of laundry to do. Still not too much of a problem. We ate supper and went to empty the trash cans into the outside garbage and that was full so we just kept piling on top of the existing garbage. None of this was really a problem and we were enjoying our time together.
On Friday morning when everyone was showering and getting ready for the day, my niece had sewage back up into the basement tub. We then noticed sewage was coming up from the drain in the laundry room and seeping onto the basement floor. It stunk something awful. My husband (who is familiar with sewer systems) went out and checked the septic tank and it was completely full. I contacted the property manager and she was able to find another cabin for us to move to. I'm not so sure a group of 13 should have been staying at Mile High Cabin with the sewer not prepped accordingly. Either way, we packed up all 13 of us and moved to another cabin.
The cabin we got moved to was just as beautiful but it was smaller. We rented Mile High Cabin because it had bunk beds and several places for 7 kids to sleep away from the adults. The cabin we were moved to had four bed rooms so one of our adult couples had to sleep with kids. The bathrooms were also very small in the new cabin. Don't get me wrong, the new place was great, but it wasn't what we signed up for. I texted the property manager to see if we would be refunded any amount for the trouble we went through. She texted back six hours later and said she would check with the owners and I haven't heard from her since. we enjoyed the family time, but were overall unsatisfied with the end result.
I never would have left an unfavorable review if we were at least offered something for the hassle.
Thanks for staying and for your review. We did our best to accommodate your group and from the correspondence with the guest that booked the property, we thought you were pleased with our ability to get you moved to a comparable property within 1.5 hours of discovering the septic issue - not an easy task to find another open cabin over a holiday weekend! :) We sent pictures of the new cabin before the move to make sure it was acceptable and it was approved by the guest we were communicating with. There was also a very nice review left at the new cabin stating: "Our family stayed here for Thanksgiving. We originally started at another cabin but that had sewer problems so we ended up here and it was GREAT!" We refunded $237.50 (half a day's rent) for your group's hassle of having to move to a different cabin and that check was cashed by the person that booked the property. We sincerely want all guests to have a great stay and try our very best to make everyone happy even when situations such as these occur. We hope you had a great time with your family despite the septic issue.
Update 5/4/18: This cabin is under new ownership. Septic issues have been fixed.
Within 8 miles of Deadwood, 5 minutes to Deer Mountain/Mystic Miner Ski Area, 10 minute to Terry Peak. Ride to/from this cabin to ATV/Snowmobile Trails. 50 miles to Rapid City or Mt Rushmore and it's a beautiful drive!
