Overview

About the property

2 Bedroom, 1 Bath, Wheelchair Accessible; Great Kitchen; Outdoor Deck And Garden

The bungalow is located in a wonderful neighborhood, with a friendly family feeling and easy accessibility to all Bay Area destinations. The home is ideal for a vacation base from which to explore the Bay Area; for a sabbatical with easy access to University of California at Berkeley and good schools for one's children; or, for a base to relocate to the Bay Area.

It is easy to get to San Francisco via BART, and then travel around San Francisco with the locally based Uber. UC Berkeley campus is four miles away. BART is a 15 minute walk or 5 minute drive.

This home features an open floor plan with the kitchen opening onto a full deck surrounded by a private garden for indoor/outdoor living. Combined with a kitchen designed for a chef, it is a good place to entertain.

The neighborhood is a walkable place: there is a weekly farmer's market a block away which features organic vegetables, meats, fish and eggs; local products like olive oil, balsamic vinegar and wine; and live entertainment. Two blocks away Memorial Park offers a public swimming pool, tennis courts, playground, and group picnic areas.

Around the corner is a well-stocked neighborhood grocery; an English style family-friendly pub; an upscale pizzeria; a bakery which also serves coffee drinks; a dry cleaner; and spa. Solano Avenue, with its numerous restaurants and shops, is four blocks away. BART is a 15 minute walk/5 minute drive; SF is a 30 minute BART ride away; UC Berkeley campus, 4 miles away.

Just a ten minute drive will bring you to 'gourmet ghetto' -- home of California cuisine and Chez Panisse, Alice Waters' wonderful restaurant and cafe. The restaurant scene within 5 miles of this home is a serious contender internationally.

The home is good base from which to explore a number of Northern California destinations: Napa Valley is an hour away north and Silicon Valley an hour away to the south; Marin 45 minutes to the west, with wonderful ocean beaches and quaint towns like Bolinas and Sausalito. Carmel, Monterey, the Gold Country, the Russian River area, Sacramento, are all within two hours.

The ridge line to the east is home to a string of connected parks and open space, offering miles of trails, including biking trails and untouched California woodland; to the west is the Bay and spectacular views of San Francisco, the Golden Gate and Mt. Tamalpais. There are numerous places to launch kayaks around the Bay, including Albany, Berkeley, Oakland and Sausalito. Both Sausalito and Oakland have great places to rent kayaks and other water craft.

The most recent renovation included attention to 'universal design' to increase accessibility. The living space of the house is all on one level, including the deck. A ramp connects the driveway with the deck: one can wheel groceries in the red wagon (provided) from the car to the kitchen, and a wheelchair can travel the same route. Thought has also been given to reducing the number of allergens; scent-free products are used and provided; radiant floor heating provides comfortable heat and reduces the particulates in the air; the house has been pet-free for many years

We do our best to accommodate the dates you ask for which are available, including dates that involve a same-day turn-around of travelers (travelers leaving and new travelers arriving on the same day). However, we may not be able to accommodate those requests on very short notice (bookings made less than one week from the arrival date).

About Mary Duryee

I grew up in the Northwest, and came to the Bay Area to go to school. Almost immediately I fell in love with fall light in Berkeley, and haven't left since. I still live locally, and feel lucky every day to be in the Bay Area.

Mary Duryee purchased this bungalow in 1984

Why Mary Duryee chose Thousand Oaks

This bungalow is my first home in the Bay Area. I bought it because it was what I could afford at the time -- it needed a lot of attention. Then I came to realize what a find it was -- for its neighborhood; the unique combination of small town manageability surrounded by a variety of vibrant cultural offerings; and, the accessibility of open space with myriad means of enjoying it - by foot, car, bike, kayak. During the last 3 decades I have worked to polish it into a comfortable, easy, and healthy place to live.

What makes this bungalow unique

Albany offers small scale living, in the middle of sophisticated surroundings: easy walking and biking to all services, while in close proximity to a major academic center, significant culinary opportunities, and one of the loveliest cities in the country.

Great home from home

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four stayed at this beautiful, relaxing home on Santa Fe for a week in August 2018. The house is very clean and comfortable and as detailed in the listing. Situated in a delightful and friendly neighborhood, it made a great base for a week of exploring San Francisco and the Bay Area. Close to some good eateries such as Fat Apples for breakfast in El Cerrito and Benmark Pizza just around the corner. Within walking distance of Albany's interesting local shops and services. The charming, quiet and friendly neighborhood meant it was a pleasure to go out for a walk in the evening after the hustle and bustle of the city.

The house was well stocked and made us feel right at home as soon as we arrived. The owner has provided a thorough file of up to date information about the house and surrounding areas which was very useful. Ramp access at the back of the house was great for a wheelchair user to enjoy the bungalow and pretty back garden.

Would definitely recommend.

The house was beautiful. Tucked away in a cute, quiet community. Everything you might need can be found within a few blocks. The backyard was a great place to sit and have coffee. And the accommodations were perfect. Comfy beds and plenty of space for the family.
