1838 one bedroom barn, with privacy and glorious light.
About Peter Ross
I'm a portrait photographer and spend my time going back and forth between Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, and Cupcake Cottage in Roxbury, NY. I've been renting the house out to weekend visitors for a few years now, and love sharing my little slice of paradise with some very happy guests.
Peter Ross purchased this House in 2004
Why Peter Ross chose Roxbury
Cupcake Cottage was built as a small barn in 1838, and sits on a steep hill way up high. The house fills with light when the sun sets directly across the far valley, and it's completely magical. It feels entirely secluded and peaceful, but is still a short drive to groceries, restaurants, and area attractions. The best of all worlds.
What makes this House unique
There is a hammock under an old apple tree, a fire pit in the meadow, and the kitchen is well stocked with basic pantry items and cooking tools. There is a charcoal grill and a wood burning stove for winter heat. A vintage KLH record player and vinyl collection awaits, and a modern Bose speaker to output ipods and similar devices. Wifi, and an Apple TV with Netflix and HBO etc.

Beautiful property, quiet stay and very responsive and attentive host!
A very unique and special place
This is the kind of place you kind of wish no one else knew about. I think all the other reviews have said it best. Peter is a wonderful person and the best host. I can't wait to come back!
Cottage in ShangriLa
Quaint, adorable cottage in a great location, convenient to many attractions. Amazing views from the cottage and lovely grounds, including an abundant vegetable garden which the owner generously shares with visitors. Kitchen is wonderfully stocked with every piece of equipment a cook could desire. And the bedroom and bed are so comfortable. Excellent water pressure in the shower!! The main drawback for us was that the bedroom is on the second floor and the bathroom is on the first, so if one needs to use the bathroom during the night, an adventurous journey awaits. Peter was/is an extremely attentive, helpful, and gracious host. Overall a great stay.
Perfect couple's getaway
Hubs and I brought our two pups to Cupcake Cottage for a five-day stay and had a wonderful time! Peter has done a wonderful job at making this place welcoming and comfortable. Some of my favorite things to do; check out the books and knick knacks on the shelves, walk through and pick from the gardens, drink my coffee and watch the fog lift from the valley in the morning and so many other things! Hubs and I LOVED the shower head, silly thing to mention but it was just that awesome. We were also impressed with the water pressure, smell and taste because sometimes well water isn't that great, this water was excellent. I really can't say enough about how chill this place was. We went the end of June and nights were in the 50's and perfect for sleeping. Days got a bit warmer but as long as the wind was blowing it was comfortable.
It's as if Peter has thought of everything because when we needed something, it always seemed to be right where it should be. Though we didn't do a lot of sight-seeing we did make it down to Big Pond and the drive there was beautiful. Food and attractions are a minimum of a 15-minute drive away. The "no cell service" warnings are no joke. We had Sprint, Verizon and AT&T and could only send messages or make calls over wifi, which thankfully, the cottage has.
Peter was super fast with any questions or comments and I enjoyed all of the tips he provided to make the best out of our stay. He has a great eye and a passion for his cottage, it's quite obvious, and for Peter to share his unique place with us was such a joy.
A Gem On The Hill
My wife and I recently enjoyed a very relaxing stay at the Cupcake Cottage, and we found it to be the perfect getaway from the city for us and our small poodle mix, Kramer.
Peter was an amazing host, providing some excellent bonuses that really make the cottage stand out amongst other houses we've rented over the years. Highlights included an amazing record collection, a spacious kitchen with plentiful accoutrements, an amazing fresh vegetable garden, and a deck with a grand view of the valley below. It was an absolute thrill to spin so many classic jazz, blues, samba, and soul records -- perfect coffee time & evening beer jams.
I also found the space great for getting work done - I felt very at-ease in the morning and made some good progress on a game project I'm currently working on.
As for the general area - it's the Catskills! So lots of hiking / biking / kayaking / skiing / farm visits are all within reasonable distance. We managed to do all of the above, except skiing, because it was September.
Would we go back? Absolutely! We're already looking forward to our next trip.
Wonderful long weekend
We had a lovely and relaxing time and the cottage exceeded expectations. Very cozy and perfect for two people. I loved the large upstairs bedroom/loft. We had several excellent fires.
Anything you could think of needing was there, comfort, electronics, food prep wise. I did not realize I wouldn't need to bring a single toiletrie item either!
Peter was a great host, available if we needed and checked in, super easy to communicate with.
We cannot wait to go back!
