Exceptionally Unique property, nothing else like it in the world. Location can't be beat, and it is right here in the USA! No passports, no swine flu, no diarrhea. My 5 yo son with autism had the time of his life learning to snorkel in the lagoon. He was on his own swimming around on the second day. We'll be back for sure.

Big Island

Truly enchanting

  • 5 of 5

Wow! What a truly enchanting place, it's so hard to describe what a great time we had. On our next to the last day, we swam with no fewer than 10 sea turtles in the Champagne Pond next door. The fish and your pond were of course awesome. Loved the breezes, the sun, the rain, and most of all we loved how close our family became, us 3 island adventurers! Hope to visit next year! Mahalo--

P.S. I was hoping we could watch the Wizard of Oz so that Evan could see Ann's Uncle ray Bolger. Unfortunately, he was too tired from swimming with the fish and turtles to watch a movie.

Amazing spot

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to the lagoon house. This is a truly amazing spot. Big Island has a lot to offer, but we always found it hard to leave the property because there just isn’t anything quite like it. Relaxing in the pool keeping up with puffy was the best part of the vacation. That said, if you demand a bug and filth free house with granite countertops and new finishes, then this might not work for you. The house itself is not the feature. It would be nice if the house got a little TLC, but even if it was partially on fire the location would be amazing and worth it.

Satisfying Lagoon House !

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here after long time.

My friends who came for the first time were very satisfied.

We were absorbed in the tropical fish swimming in the pond.

Of course We enjoyed BBQ too.

Unfortunately the hammock was gone. And BBQ stove was very dirty and quite broken.

I hope it gets better next time.

Owner's Response: Mahalo for your kind words, Date san! We're so happy that you returned to Lagoon House and shared it with your friends :-) We will let the owners know that it's time to replace the BBQ. Thank you for letting us know. We'll mention a new hammock too. Take care, and we'll hope to see you again soon. Warmest Aloha The Team at Hawaii Holiday Vacation Rentals

Love and Hate

  • 3 of 5

The Lagoon is FABULOUS! Cannot find a better private lagoon anywhere else even if in the same neighborhood. Our 4 year old boy learned how to snorkel as soon as he saw fish in the lagoon. Another member is afraid of water and did snorkel for the first time in her life and enjoyed the lagoon greatly. The water in this lagoon is much warmer than the public Champagne Beach, which right next to this property. Also there are more and bigger fish in the lagoon than the popular public beach. Just be aware, jelly can come in and go. One day we saw one small jelly fish and another day we saw three.

The house itself needs major renovation. The living room and patio are great, very pleasant to sit there feeling ocean breeze and watching waves.

However the kitchen and bedrooms are the worst among all properties we have rented from VRBO.

The house looks like was finished in 60's or 70's. Cabinets and bathrooms have not been updated since then other than faucets and appliances. The size of master bedroom is good but the 2nd bedroom is very small. The master is fine to sleep in with all windows open, but one wall has two holes on it. The 2nd bedroom on the main floor is very small and the bed is uncomfortable. The downstairs bedroom is not really livable. We do back-country camping so before we went we thought this house would be fine. I was wrong! There are two slide doors but one was broken so we had to keep it closed all the time. If both doors could be open to let air flow through, we won't have much complains. There's no A/C but a table fan, so even at night the air in this room got stuffy. Another door's screen door came off several times. The bathroom next to this bedroom is rustic and has many cockroaches. We also found two dead cockroaches in the living room.

The kitchen has basic essentials but all old and cheap quality. Don't be surprised to see ants around the sink.

On top of our bedroom and kitchen complains, the community gate drove us nuts. We had two cars and we didn’t go out and come back at the same time, but only one card was given to us. The gate code didn't work and the owner knew about it but didn't get it fixed.

We enjoyed our stay during the day but not so much at night. In short, we don't recommend this place.

beautiful location but poorly maintained house

  • 1 of 5

beautiful location but poorly maintained house, woodwormbeetles fell of ceiling into our bed and walked uncomfortable over us. Houseowner reports 'that happend once or twice a year'. House too small for the stated 7 people, the bedrooms are very small. The cameras outside caused a "big brother is watching you feeling'.

The lagoon is neat, but not that neat

  • 3 of 5

The lagoon is really neat, and the fish are tame and swim right up to you. I don't think the rental is worth the $2,400/week rate, though. I have two issues with the house.

There is no way that this house "Comfortably accommodates up to 7 people." It could accommodate 4 people, tops. It would fit either 2 couples, or a couple with two kids if the kids share a room. There are two bedrooms upstairs, and the "3rd" bedroom is a very, very tiny room that only has room for twin bunk beds, and this room is detached from the upstairs portion of the house, and the other bedrooms. You have to walk outside and around the house to get to this room. It's too hot to sleep in this room, and the kids (15 & 16) don't feel comfortable down there alone. Also, the screens fall off the door every time you try to open them. The second bathroom is also down there, and it isn't even attached to this 3rd bedroom. It is just an outdoor, standalone bathroom. I would have felt better about the rental if they had advertised 2 bedroom, with a lagoon side, outdoor bathroom/changing area.

The second issue I have is the privacy. There is a private lagoon, but the rental itself is not private at all. We stayed from Sunday to Saturday. Sunday through Wednesday was fine, but by Thursday, a big group of people arrived at 6:30am with constantly screaming children, and adults who kept screaming at those children. I slept with earplugs and the screams still woke me up. They also stayed up until well after 3am with powerful flashlights that kept shining in the master bedroom window, and of course the screaming. There is no A/C, and it is too hot to shut the windows to help with the noise. Also, there was a group of 6 or so people who decided to walk along the rock wall of the house and investigate us and the pond. If you look right out the windows, you are always looking at strangers at the cottage next door or at the Champagne Pond.

The kitchen and the house is outdated, but that's fine. You would be staying here for the lagoon. Just don't expect too much else.
