Did not deliver but still nice

  • 3 of 5

Daufuski is a unique, fun place and we had a great time. Melrose on the beach could just as easily have been called Melrose on the swamp though. During low tide there are 20 yards of mud between sand and water (which offers it's own opportunities). This cottage is part of a row of side-by-side duplexes, but since Melrose is still largely abandoned, you have lots of quiet beautiful space around you. Kitchen had all the cooking supplies you needed. Beds were not comfortable though. Bring your own pillows (and toilet paper). Rain storms cycled the power 4 times while we were there, knocking out the wifi for the last half of the week.

Owner's Response: We are hard-pressed to respond to this review, because it contains a number of distortions and outright inaccuracies. We would first ask other guests to be sure to read our other reviews (which average 4.9 stars) to get a true picture of this cottage, our services, and the island. Without going into details, in spite of our best efforts this guest seemed determined to find fault with his stay from the get-go. We have never had complaints about the quality of our beds (an earlier reviewer commented on how comfortable they are) or pillows and we DO provide toilet paper (two rolls per bathroom and more upon request), as well as other paper supplies and unlimited amenities such as soap, dish and washing machine detergent. We are sorry that the guest was here during a week of heavy rain storms and several temporary power outages (out of our control!), but he failed to mention that we have equipped the property with expensive "Rely-a-Lights" lamps that provide light and a device-charging port for up to 24 hours during the occasional power outages. He also didn't mention the superior decorating touches, the impeccable cleanliness, and our hands-on service with his visit both before and during his family's stay. As far as his beach critique, we always tell people that there is a difference between low tide (when it can get a little mucky) and medium/high tide. Again, our other guests have been quite happy with this secluded and beautiful beach. His comments about the "abandoned resort" imply that this cottage is surrounded by empty properties, and that just isn't the case at all. We are sorry this guest didn't enjoy his stay nor appreciate our beautiful island and lovely cottage, but trust/hope he will seek a different vacation experience for his next holiday. Lovely cottage and Island

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time spending a week at the cottage with our 2 children and loved that we were able to bring our dog with us! The house is very nice, clean, well decorated and well stocked. The owners were very helpful. This was our first time to the island and it’s one of the neatest places we’ve ever been. So beautiful, charming, full of history, and the people were so nice. It was so fun being able to get around everywhere via golf cart- our kids really enjoyed that part! The beach is also very nice and pretty secluded. We were looking for a place to disconnect and relax and we definitely found it!

A few travel tips (simply because I would appreciate the info as a fellow visitor):

— The convenience store on the island has very little in the way of essentials- mostly souvenirs. So, pack your groceries and try not to forget anything!

— They do not have diapers, rash cream, or anything baby related, so pack plenty if you have littles.

— there’s nowhere to buy any real produce, so bring it with you

— a fold up wagon was a life saver for getting our stuff onto the ferry. Bring it if you have it.

— I packed our dry groceries in a large plastic bin with a lid and that transported well onto the ferry.

— the restaurants are very good and we really liked the coffee house; the owners were so nice!

— Bring bug spray. We only had 1 day where the bugs were really bad on the beach, but we went through 2 cans in that day.

We had a great stay and hope to be back in the future!

Great communication and loved the house! Just needed more towels.

  • 4 of 5

This was our second trip to D.I. and we were sad to discover that Melrose Place is still in a partial state of disrepair. However, the house is in the part of the resort that is being very well kept. It was clean and had everything we needed for our stay. It is beautifully decorated and the beds were very comfortable. The use of a six person golf cart was a great perk to go along with the house. The only complaint I had was that there was only one towel and wash cloth per person for a three night stay, so we had to do laundry each night.

Owner's Response: Tammy - We were glad you enjoyed your stay. Yes, the resort is still closed, but there have been good developments just in the past month, including a new resort owner and plans for major renovations of some of the older cottages. Also, we believe the pool and restaurant may still be opened this year, although we don't offer any guarantees for that. *** Regarding the towel situation. We usually DO provide two towels per guest, and don't know why that didn't happen in your case. We ask guests to let us know if they need anything at all, and did stop by your cottage mid-visit to see if you needed anything. We would have been happy to provide more towels if you had asked... *** At any rate, we appreciate your mentioning the beauty and comfort of the cottage, and the great benefit of having a free 6 person cart. **** Deborah Smith Daufuskie Rental Group Deborah, you are right and I should have thought to ask. The house was great and we will definitely book it again! Thank you.
