The Halls River is one of Citrus County's best-kept secrets; totally natural - totally pristine - totally Nature Coast at its finest! Off our private dock, there is some of the best bass and mullet fishing in Citrus County and unforgettable views of wildlife, birds and of course... Manatees. Yet, it is only minutes from either Crystal River or Homosassa for shopping, great restaurants, and the state's most popular wildlife park. And only 90 minutes to some of Florida's best theme parks, zoo, museums, and attractions!

RENTAL RATE: $995/wk (7 days/6 nights) or $175/night w/ 3-night minimum plus tax, cleaning fee, and 100% refundable security deposit. *MONTHLY RATE: $2,950 plus tax, cleaning fee, and 100% refundable security deposit. THIS IS A NO SMOKING PROPERTY. Small dogs are welcome (saving you expensive kennel fees); see the “Pets Considered” section under “Suitability” for details.

LOCATION: This dog-friendly waterfront home is centrally located on a quiet road in the coveted north end of Homosassa, minutes south of Crystal River. It is 10 minutes from the Old Homosassa public boat ramp where you can launch your boat for free or rent a boat, canoe or more kayaks. You can also buy bait & tackle, scallop supplies or schedule boat tours. When not rented, this home is used by our family for personal vacations.

We are conveniently located just 60 minutes north of Tampa and St. Petersburg, directly off of U.S. HWY 19 between West Halls River Road (CR 490A) and West Ozello Trail (CR 494). Get away from it all without being too far away.

SLEEPING ACCOMMODATIONS: The master bedroom has a very comfortable king bed, its own 40” television with HD cable box, a walk-in closet, and an en-suite master bathroom. The second bedroom has a Serta advanced gel memory foam queen mattress set that, like a Tempur-Pedic, provides plush comfort combined with body-contouring support. The third bedroom has a loveseat that pulls out into a full-size bed and its own 40” television with a DVD player and basic HD channels. The living room sofa pulls out into a queen-size bed and its own 50” television with HD cable box and DVD player. Manatee and dolphin come up to the dock. There are large snook, sheepshead, red snapper, freshwater bass and mullet to be caught right from the dock. You can also trap blue crabs down the Halls River. Or skip the boats and snorkel to explore the blue hole just a few yards up the spring. Rental rate includes 4 kayaks (saving you kayak rental fees).

NAVIGATING THE HALLS RIVER: Our house is on the Halls River. Flats boats or other boats that are suited to low water are the best to take up the Halls River. For bigger boats, you can put your boat in for free at the Homosassa boat launch next to McRaes (about a 10-minute drive from the house). From this location, you can quickly get out to the Homosassa River and then onto the Gulf. There is room in front of our house for a boat trailer.

If you bring your boat up the Halls River to the house, you can tie your boat at our dock and leave it there for the duration of your stay. The dock can accommodate up to a 20-foot boat. There are multiple cleats and it is a floating dock for easy mooring. We do not have a boat lift.

Our house doesn’t offer a quick route to the Gulf but you can get there. It takes roughly 40 minutes, depending on how fast you go, to get from the house to the intersection of the Halls River and Homosassa River. There is no wake in these areas due to the manatees. From there, you are another 10 minutes to Homosassa Springs or another few miles to the Gulf.

Here are a couple of caveats about navigating the Halls River for you to consider:

- Navigating the Halls River up to our house requires that you be comfortable with your boat in low water. Up around the house, the water is easily 5–7 feet deep. But down through the middle section of the Halls, there are large open areas where the water levels drop. Having a depth/fish finder is very helpful as water levels can be as low as 1 foot at times depending on the time of year. The water levels vary year-round depending on prevailing wind direction and tide but tend to rise in the autumn and throughout the winter.

- Finding the channel through these larger flat areas and through the tighter connecting channels on the Halls River is key; you must stay in the channel to make it through. It is not always clearly marked given that there are minor variations with sand shifting each year. If you have looked at the Halls River on Google Maps, the channels are easy to see. It is a mostly sandy bottom through these tight areas.

- Halls River Bridge, just up river from the Homosassa River, is a low bridge measuring 8 feet from the water level to the bottom of the bridge. If you have a Bimini, you might want to lower it as you go through. The bridge accommodates smaller, shallower boats but stops bigger boats. Also, tide fluctuations do have an impact at the Halls River Bridge.

We hope this information helps. If you have other questions or would like to reserve the property, please call or email us.

AREA ATTRACTIONS: The nearby mall has a multiplex movie theater, restaurants and shopping in historic downtown Crystal River. About Ken & Susan Fuhrman

We've been married for 25 years and have two great kids. We both work in the tech industry as independent contractors. This gives us lots of flexibility and allows us to enjoy our new Florida home often. Ken first visited this area in 2014 with his parents, who live nearby in The Villages. Ken felt that this was the closest feeling he had to being in Hawaii without all expense and lengthy travel time. This is our personal home now and we have decided to rent it when we can't be there to enjoy it.

Ken & Susan Fuhrman purchased this house in 2015

Why Ken & Susan Fuhrman chose Florida Central West

We looked at many homes in the Crystal River / Homosassa area and couldn't find a nicer property than this. We wanted a home with access to the Gulf, but also access to some of the waterways that lead to the Gulf; this home was perfect. It is a newer home at the head waters of the Halls River. There is a natural spring just yards up the river from us so the waters are crystal clear and much cleaner than anything we looked at on other canals. The kayaking is simply spectacular.

There are no high-rise condos here and it is located in one of the last remaining natural coastal areas of Central Florida. It feels very secluded because the neighborhood isn't all built up but drive just minutes to US Hwy 19 and all the shopping, restaurants and activities you need are right there. It really is far enough away without being too far away.

What makes this house unique

We love this home because of its location and the newness of the property; it is clean and well maintained. We have purchased all new furniture, comfortable beds and luxurious bedding to make it feel like a retreat. We outfitted the kitchen so if you don't feel like eating out, you can have a quiet dinner at home. The views out the back windows and the Florida room are of our private dock and Halls River with all its wildlife, including the manatees. Much of the land around us is not developed so you see the beauty of Florida out the front windows too. All the undeveloped land around the house gives you the full Nature Coast feel while still being in a comfortable home. A true getaway ...

Lovely Home sweet home...Fido is welcome too.

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at many rentals over the years. Ken and Susan have done an amazing job at providing a clean and well appointed home for the family and our sweet dog. Home was very clean (no dirty feet) Had all the things we needed to cook fresh catches from the area Seafood Markets. There are many fun activities in the area. The lovely springs, boat rides and biking brought us to gorgeous gulf views. The kayaks were fun to have available for rides in the backyard. We saw tons of fish, one manatee (end of season) and even a huge owl on our morning leaving. Nice linens and very kind owners. We enjoyed it . Thanks for letting us stay in "your home" =) ~Jess, Tom and Family.

Wonderful family rental!

  • 5 of 5

This is a great house. Easy access in a quiet location and close to everything.

We had plenty of parking for our truck/boat trailer and 2 small SUV's.

Well decorated, very clean and spacious inside and out. There were 8 of us and we never felt crowded.

The beds were comfortable with plenty of spare linens. The kitchen had everything we needed and then some. Having the kayaks was a definite bonus. We spent day two out back on the river enjoying nature. The kids loved it!

The owners Ken and Susan were easy to communicate with. They provided plenty amenities to make you feel right at home. There was lots of information about things to do and restaurants in the area.

We would definately rent this home again.

Perfect Family House

  • 5 of 5

We brought our in-laws and puppy to stay near Homosassa for an extended weekend to take advantage of the scallop season and fishing charters in the area. This home was in impeccable condition and the owners were very easy to work with. It made a great place for our four year old to run around in and was comfortable for 4 adults to cook, sleep, and relax in. I definitely would stay here again next scallop season and would highly recommend!!

Nice house plenty of room love the kayaks

  • 3 of 5

Was told my small pontoon boat would make it to the private dock. Unfortunately two of us were unable to push and pull the boat between the shallow channels between the small lakes that lead to the private dock. My reverse quit working due to the shallow waters the first day of our 10 day scalloping trip. Also my brand new gps depth finder sensor almost snapped off we had to remove under water. So of course we were very disappointed as we rented this property knowing we could leave my boat in back of the house when only an airboat could even try to make it.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Tony, for your review. Sorry that your pontoon couldn't make it up the river. As described in our listing, the water levels can get pretty low in that middle stretch of the Halls River. Hopefully, with having the Homosassa boat launch so close to the house, you were still able to get plenty of scallops.
