NAVIGATING THE HALLS RIVER: Our house is on the Halls River. Flats boats or other boats that are suited to low water are the best to take up the Halls River. For bigger boats, you can put your boat in for free at the Homosassa boat launch next to McRaes (about a 10-minute drive from the house). From this location, you can quickly get out to the Homosassa River and then onto the Gulf. There is room in front of our house for a boat trailer.
If you bring your boat up the Halls River to the house, you can tie your boat at our dock and leave it there for the duration of your stay. The dock can accommodate up to a 20-foot boat. There are multiple cleats and it is a floating dock for easy mooring. We do not have a boat lift.
Our house doesn’t offer a quick route to the Gulf but you can get there. It takes roughly 40 minutes, depending on how fast you go, to get from the house to the intersection of the Halls River and Homosassa River. There is no wake in these areas due to the manatees. From there, you are another 10 minutes to Homosassa Springs or another few miles to the Gulf.
Here are a couple of caveats about navigating the Halls River for you to consider:
- Navigating the Halls River up to our house requires that you be comfortable with your boat in low water. Up around the house, the water is easily 5–7 feet deep. But down through the middle section of the Halls, there are large open areas where the water levels drop. Having a depth/fish finder is very helpful as water levels can be as low as 1 foot at times depending on the time of year. The water levels vary year-round depending on prevailing wind direction and tide but tend to rise in the autumn and throughout the winter.
- Finding the channel through these larger flat areas and through the tighter connecting channels on the Halls River is key; you must stay in the channel to make it through. It is not always clearly marked given that there are minor variations with sand shifting each year. If you have looked at the Halls River on Google Maps, the channels are easy to see. It is a mostly sandy bottom through these tight areas.
- Halls River Bridge, just up river from the Homosassa River, is a low bridge measuring 8 feet from the water level to the bottom of the bridge. If you have a Bimini, you might want to lower it as you go through. The bridge accommodates smaller, shallower boats but stops bigger boats. Also, tide fluctuations do have an impact at the Halls River Bridge.
We hope this information helps. If you have other questions or would like to reserve the property, please call or email us.

About Ken & Susan Fuhrman
We've been married for 25 years and have two great kids. We both work in the tech industry as independent contractors. This gives us lots of flexibility and allows us to enjoy our new Florida home often. Ken first visited this area in 2014 with his parents, who live nearby in The Villages. Ken felt that this was the closest feeling he had to being in Hawaii without all expense and lengthy travel time. This is our personal home now and we have decided to rent it when we can't be there to enjoy it.
Ken & Susan Fuhrman purchased this House in 2015
Why Ken & Susan Fuhrman chose Citrus County
We looked at many homes in the Crystal River / Homosassa area and couldn't find a nicer property than this. We wanted a home with access to the Gulf, but also access to some of the waterways that lead to the Gulf; this home was perfect. It is a newer home at the head waters of the Halls River. There is a natural spring just yards up the river from us so the waters are crystal clear and much cleaner than anything we looked at on other canals. The kayaking is simply spectacular. There are no high-rise condos here and it is located in one of the last remaining natural coastal areas of Central Florida. It feels very secluded because the neighborhood isn't all built up but drive just minutes to US Hwy 19 and all the shopping, restaurants and activities you need are right there. It really is far enough away without being too far away.
What makes this House unique
We love this home because of its location and the newness of the property; it is clean and well maintained. We have purchased all new furniture, comfortable beds and luxurious bedding to make it feel like a retreat. We outfitted the kitchen so if you don't feel like eating out, you can have a quiet dinner at home. The views out the back windows and the Florida room are of our private dock and Halls River with all its wildlife, including the manatees. Much of the land around us is not developed so you see the beauty of Florida out the front windows too. All the undeveloped land around the house gives you the full Nature Coast feel while still being in a comfortable home. A true getaway ...

Comfortable and relaxing
This was a great property for our weekend visit. We loved the kayaks and used them daily. The kitchen has everything we needed and the beds were super comfy.
Excellent place to stay!
This house truly met our needs. My mother uses a walker and there were only two small steps to get into the house. The rooms were spacious and the separation of the bedrooms gave my wife and I and my parents more privacy. The furniture was comfortable and the kitchen was well supplied. The owners are well organized so there was little question as to what we needed to do. Also, Ken was very responsive to text messages that we sent during our stay (minor questions).
Very clean, nicely furnished, and very relaxing.
Enjoyed watching the manatee almost every day from the property's dock. Neighbors were very friendly and Ken, the property owner was great. Lots of places to see and great places to eat in the area.
Thanks for staying at the property. We glad you enjoyed your stay. Also thanks for helping out at the house.
Super nice and clean!
This house was the BEST VRBO property I've stayed in. The house was super clean and decorated so cute. My family and I loved the extra large world map in the living room. We had 4 adults, 2 teenagers and 1 child and the house was plenty big enough for us. You want be disappointed if you rent this place. We love this and we plan on coming back next year.
Lesley, you and your family will always be welcome in our home. Thank you for being such wonderful caring guests! Please do come back and stay again very soon.
Christmas at the Headwater of the Halls River
We enjoyed our stay. The house worked out really well. We used some of the kayaks nearly everyday. Saw all kinds of tropical birds, fish, and turtles. Even saw a otter one day.
Thank you for renting to us over the Holidays.
Chuck & Carol

Very nice property
We came for the Thanksgiving weekend with our adult kids. The house was lovely and spacious. We enjoyed the kayaks they had for us to use. Ken and Susan were very nice and accommodating for our arrival needs. Will definitely stay here again. Considering coming back during scalloping season.
You and your family will always be welcome in our home. Thank you, Anna, for being such wonderful caring guests! Please do come back and stay again very soon.
