3 Bedroom 2 Bathroom Close To Beach And Amenities Designed For Wheelchair Access
Whispering Ferns is a three bedroom two bath home on five acres of mature forest. It sleeps ten in three queen beds and two twin beds and two on two separate foldaway beds. Children and pets are welcome, and the home offers easy access for wheelchairs. The property is 3/4's mile from the beach and one mile from the center of Fort Bragg.
Romance. Escape. Adventure. Relaxation. When we think of Fort Bragg, these words describe our state of mind. We love this quiet corner of California where the ocean greets the rugged Mendocino coast and the Pacific fog nourishes the lush forests.
Nothing calms the busy mind or rests a tired soul more than the harmony of waves washing on the sandy beach or pounding off the jagged rocks, or a hike amongst the towering ancient Redwood trees carpeted in emerald green ferns. Families, couples, and friends will find the perfect get-a-way here. The attitude is as laid back or as adventurous as you feel in the moment. We firmly believe that our favorite place on the planet can become one of your favorite places as well.
Nestled in its own five acres of towering forest, a heart beat away from the ocean – far enough for extra sunshine yet close enough to hear the roaring waves on a quiet night – Whispering Ferns offers the best of the Mendocino coast.
Enjoy your time outside as you savor the private retreat into nature. Watching ravens soar through the forest canopy, the year-round stream, acrobatic hummingbirds feeding on flowers, and deer nibbling tender grass is a delightful way to relax in this Certified Wildlife Habitat (by the National Wildlife Federation).
You can stroll through the dancing ferns and trees, just over the wooden bridge, to read in the gazebo by the stream. Continue meandering the path through the Whispering Ferns woods of mature redwoods, oak and cypress across another wooden bridge and back to the house.
Take a moment, or many, to daydream in the hammock under the redwoods, join friends and family for a game of horseshoes, find a comfy spot to sip a warm drink on the 600-square-foot deck, play a game or have a snack in the hidden picnic area, or watch the rain through the glass ceiling of the enclosed sun room.
At night, roast s’mores over the open fire pit, relax in the soothing bubbles of the sparkling hot tub, or observe the awesome expanse of stars.
The home itself is an enchanting escape from the every day. You and your loved ones can relax together in the large, yet cozy living space with vaulted ceilings punctuated with pine wood, playing board games, reading and watching movies from the 18 feet of deep, comfy couch scattered with pillows and blankets. Cable, WiFi, and a 60-inch television offer entertainment and a connection to the outside world if you desire.
Preparing a meal or a snack is a joy in the well-appointed kitchen that boasts the newest amenities for your culinary adventures. Open kitchen design with custom hickory cabinets, five-burner double oven, extra large refrigerator, heavy-duty Kitchen Aid mixer, stainless pots and pans will delight the cooks of the vacation. Or you can barbeque on the large propane BBQ on the deck. Let us know if you have any culinary equipment requests and we can confirm it is available or make it so.
Special attention has been taken to assure a lush and sumptuous night’s rest (that could take you into most of the day if you allow yourself). Our mattresses, the same as offered in the finest hotels, are the foundation to a relaxing and yet rejuvenating night's sleep. Made with a multiple-inch layer of built-in gel memory foam, they are supportive and plush. All beds are furnished with brushed microfiber sheets, faux-fur plush down blankets, and fluffy duvets in silky soft materials. An array of pillows are available for all sleepers, so picking and choosing is encouraged. Extra blankets available as well as a myriad of throws.
Downstairs are two bedrooms. The “Wave” bedroom has two closets and an en suite bathroom. The queen bed is a unique, one-of-a-kind metal wave with driftwood-like four posters. The “Forest” bedroom is a luxurious and enchanting room with a deep, wood four-poster queen bed.
Up the stairs, just off the loft, is the third bedroom. The “Sky” room has a queen bed as well as a trundle day bed that makes up into two twin beds, and will make you feel like you are sleeping in a tree house.
There are also two additional foldaway beds.
Whispering Ferns was designed for wheelchair access, allowing wheelchairs to move fully underneath bathroom counters and a wheel-in shower. Easy access to the grounds via both front and back of property is offered and a ramp is located on the back from the deck. Wide doorways and hall allow easy maneuvering. Please ask for more information if necessary.
Although the home and grounds offer a beautiful get-a-way, it’s Fort Bragg and the Mendocino coast that are the lure. Fort Bragg is an oasis from the summer heat of the valley, but year round the Mendocino coast has much to offer. With its temperate Mediterranean climate, Fort Bragg has something for everyone any time of the year. The calendar is full of events and festivals, so be sure to plan your visit if there is something that you don’t want to miss.
The center of Fort Bragg is a quick five-minute drive from Whispering Ferns, convenient for amenities as well as fun. The village of Mendocino is 20 minutes south.
The area is a surrounded by redwood forests, fern canyons, and a beautiful rugged coastline with the most stunning beaches in the world. If you are adventurous, there is plenty to do – hiking, biking, kayaking, diving, fishing, horseback riding and whale watching. Outdoor magazine just named Fort Bragg one of 64 of the best cities in America for outdoor adventure.
Shopping in Fort Bragg and Mendocino is off the hook - books, toys, art, bikes, specialty foods, unique or quirky gifts, clothing, and on and on and on.
The restaurants are simply scrumptious. You can get the yummiest steak you’ve ever had at The Restaurant or a vegan meal from The Ravens in Mendocino. Then sample world-class brews from North Coast Brewery or wine at Pacific Star Winery.
The Mendocino Coast is an artistic haven and is the quintessential spot for writing, painting, drawing, photography, and reading.
Art galleries, museums, an aquatic fitness center, Mendocino Botanical Gardens and the Skunk Train are other outstanding offerings. We love helping others find the fun and adventure (whether mild or wild) in Fort Bragg and the Mendocino Coast.
We think you'll find Whispering Ferns an ideal home to serve as hub to your adventures on the coast. Our goal is for you to feel like Whispering Ferns offers so much peace, relaxation and comfort that it becomes featured part of your vacation memories.

I grew up in the Sacramento Valley and my family and friends had always vacationed in Fort Bragg. During the summer it wasn't unusual to run into as many "neighbors" in Fort Bragg as in my little home town in Colusa County. My husband grew up on the other side of the planet - England, right outside of London. He had only been in the United States for six years, but had yet to venture to the Mendocino Coast. When I met him, one of our first excursions was to visit Fort Bragg and my favorite slice of Pacific Ocean. He loved it as much as I did! The future was set in motion. We always knew at some point, we would have our own retreat here. A place to escape, rejuvenate, and reconnect with the forest and the ocean. They say the happiest people in the world live within one mile of the ocean. I believe it with all my heart.
Jeremy purchased this House in 2015
Why Jeremy chose Fort Bragg
We looked at many homes, wearing out our patient realtor (Meghan Durban of Coast Realty), knowing what we were hoping for and being prepared to wait it out until we could find it. Pulling into the driveway of Whispering Ferns was all it took. We knew this was THE home for us! It immediately made us feel cozy, comfortable and welcome. We fell in love and we hope you will as well.
What makes this House unique
The first thing you'll notice, is a welcoming home nestled in towering canopy of cypress, redwood and oak trees. Like a fairytale. Curving through the garden are small paths enticing you to explore the property. If you go forward you will come to the glass-ceiling sun room porch and into the home through the front door. Go right to find a secluded eating area that will remind you of camping out. Or, further to the backyard and over 600 square feet of redwood deck. To the left you wander by rhododendron bushes taller than yourself to the horseshoe pit or further to a hammock strung between the redwoods. You will pass the sparkling new hot tub as you walk the trail that meanders through the whispering ferns and swaying trees to the gazebo tucked away in the woods. The gazebo is just over a small wooden bridge and overlooks a year-round stream. If you continue on the trail, you will weave in through the forest, cross another bridge, and make your way back to the yard. The five-acre home, garden and forest is a Certified Wildlife Habitat. It is home to a large variety of wildlife including foxes, fish in stream, owls, all sorts of wild birds, deer etc. It offers peace and quiet, with nothing but the sound of ocean waves crashing in the distance, yet minutes from town offering all amenities. The home is bright and airy, with privacy. Ample parking for cars and trailers. One bathroom was designed for wheelchair access under the counter and roll-in shower. Wide doorways facilitate exit and entry. The home was built with pride and is maintained with love and a deep appreciation for its wonders.

Would Come Back Again in a Heartbeat!
Our family decided to have a short vacation from the SF Bay Area, Whispering Ferns did the trick! The beds were comfy, the hot tub was nice and clean, the kitchen had everything we needed, the hammock and creek was nice and relaxing and the place was dog friendly, however we could not tell dogs stayed here previously. The bedroom layout worked out great. The bathrooms were a good size. Whispering Ferns was near or not to far from Ricochet Ranch (beach rides), Sea Glass Beach, grocery store (Safeway), Starbucks, Cowlick’s, North Beach Brewing Co., Botanical Gardens, Point Cabrillo Lighthouse and much more. At times the kids would have rather stayed at the house rather than explore Ft. Bragg/Mendocino. Jeremy and Cynthia have kept up this place beautifully! Jeremy was easy to get a hold of if need be. The place looks exactly like the photos. I read previous reviews, however it did not deter us from a short term lease. We would definitely stay here again!
Lovely but...high maintenance.
This place is secluded, has full kitchen amenities, privacy, sumptuous beds, and a gorgeous hot tub. The wooded area behind the house is a treasure trove. You couldn't ask for more of a Mendocino/Fort Bragg retreat. Perfect for a small gathering for a friend's 30th birthday.
However, the sign up process is franky scary. The host was kind enough on the phone, but the paperwork required to rent this place felt out of control. In addition to VRBO's agreements and deposit, you have to sign a separate sublease, with the name of every single person who will be sleeping there (and a stern warning if you miss anyone), and pay another deposit. I lost track of how many documents I received and had to sign, initial, etc. There is another document about the hot tub that makes it sound like a poison gas center. Also, there are security CAMERAS along the entire exterior of the house-- you don't find out until after you book. By the time I set foot in the house I was honestly tense.
I've done Airbnb and VRBO many times. I've never seen anything like this.
Someone has clearly hurt the hosts very badly, but, the whole process made me feel guilty-until-proven-innocent. Definitely not a welcome guest. Other houses are way less of a hassle, I think. I'm only writing this review because I wish someone had warned me.
We thank you for your review.
You did have the choice of not booking our home if you felt uncomfortable at that point of looking over the paperwork that we send each and every guest. You signed 3 documents, a short term standard form rental agreement, downloaded from the internet with small changes, an agreement to use the hot tub and not hold us responsible as we don’t have chlorinated city water but well water, and a 3rd document outlining some common courtesy rules we put in place, such as a speed limit driving down our gravel lane, or parking on the grass. As for the security cameras… This is copied and pasted from the document that you signed. See below.Security
“We have security cameras all around our home. We do not have cameras inside our home to maintain our guests privacy and likewise we do not have any cameras focused on our hot tub. We do have a camera that just shows the left hand railing of the deck if looking at the hot tub from the main deck. We are protecting our home and not spying on our guests. We have no reason to look at video recorded or still shots taken unless we get complaints from our neighbors. If we have to look at our video footage or have taken still shots for evidence of your wrongdoing, then your short-term rental agreement (lease) will be terminated. 1 By phone call to the number on the short-term agreement. 2.The sheriff will be called and you will be asked to leave our home immediately. No refunds will be given.
You agree to the terms of this document as evidenced by the signature set forth below.”
Again, you signed this, and could have decided at that point not to proceed with the booking.
There is no such warning on any of our paperwork if you fail to mention a guest on the lease, there is no sublease and no “other deposit”.
We are sorry you did not enjoy yourself in our home, and felt uncomfortable.
Additionally, I have mentioned several times in correspondence that we welcome any questions or concerns that you may have. The only phone call I received from you, was that you would arrive late on the day of your arrival, and your friend wanted the lockbox code, to gain entry to our home.
Our cleaning company, reports back to me on the condition of our home after each guest, and we do want to thank you for leaving our home in great shape, and for treating it with respect.
I hope this clears up any misunderstanding for our future guests
This home is set in a 5 acre forest. Quiet, wildlife, hear the ocean (as Jeremy said you would) and the stars at night were incredible. The house is spacious, extremely well equipped, the kitchen is very well stocked, and the bedrooms are quiet with blackout curtains. We noticed there were USB outlets throughout and so was easy to charge phones and tablets. The beds were extremely comfortable with soft sheets and duvets. High speed internet. The grounds are well kept, must be at least 2 acres of open area, the rest being forest. There is a trail through the forest still on the property that is fun to walk through and two bridges that cross a seasonal stream. Overall, I would love to come back again and again.
A peaceful, and well-kept home with many amenities
We enjoyed our stay at Whispering Ferns! It was just what we needed for our family getaway from Wisconsin. It's so close to the beach and to town, yet so peaceful. The trails through the woods were beautiful. We enjoyed several hikes along the coast (there is parking at the beach, or it's only a 3/4 mile walk to get there). The house is furnished well with comfortable chairs, a large dining table, a huge kitchen and spacious laundry room. The living room has doors and windows to both sides of the house.
The bathrooms were perfect and well stocked with towels. The beds were comfortable and cozy. The owner takes care of this property and I appreciate that guests are given instructions on how to take care of it while they are there. There are instructions for the hot tub, heat, lighting, etc. The kitchen has everything a coffee-lover needs, as well as many dishes and pans.
Jeremy is very responsive and courteous if you need to ask any questions. VRBO gave us an old code for the door and he responded immediately when I called him.
If there was one thing we could change about the property it would be to have one bed on the first floor that is accessible for someone with a disability. The bathrooms are equipped, and getting into the home is easy. But the downstairs beds are very high. This was a challenge for one of our family members, but we were able to make it work. It's something to be aware of if you are choosing it because of the accessibility.
I'm pleased that we chose this property and would highly recommend it. It's such a peaceful retreat! We were there in December, so we didn't sit outside much (58 degrees), but there are many chairs outdoors, a gazebo in the woods, a grill, fire pit (bring your own firewood) and horseshoes outside to name a few.
Thank you so much for your gracious review. We now feel bad that we forgot to mention, (I don’t think we mention in our literature anywhere) that under the beds downstairs are small step stools, that we provide to make it easier for someone with a disability to get into those beds.
We are overjoyed when we get a glowing review, to find that you enjoyed our home as much as we always do. We are there now as I am writing this response, and yes I have done many small maintenance items that have been on my list for a while! Now it is time to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet, stand out on the deck and hear the ocean, and yes I tracked down where the old door code from VRBO was being given out to our guests. We do change the code after each guest.
Thank you again for an amazing review. We welcome you back home anytime as our truly valued guests.
Our family had a wonderful stay in Whispering Ferns. The house is nestled in a most beautiful, secluded, and quiet location. Yet, it's only minutes to the Fort Bragg coast and not much further to the beauty and charm of Mendocino. The location is perfect for winding down after enjoying a day of outside activities. The house was overall very clean and the beds were comfortable. The owners are also very friendly, accessible, and accommodating. The best part is waking up each morning and taking a walk through the enchanted, private forest right out the back door. We'll hopefully go back again sometime soon!
Beautiful and serene
We stayed there for 2 nights, the place is so calm and quite in the woods. Beautiful home with all amenities well maintained , we didn't have any problem whatsoever, The hot tub is very well maintained, we really enjoyed the hot tub viewing the woods, The area is so calm and its relaxing to hear the birds chirping, i would definitely revisit this home again. This place is exactly like described in the listing.
Fort Bragg and the Mendocino Coast offer extensive outdoor adventures, community events, shopping, and activities. See our guest book in the kitchen for a myriad of ideas of things to do and see. Relaxing on one of the stunning beaches, hiking or mountain biking the redwood forests, taking a ride on the Skunk Trains, dining at one of the scrumptious restaurants, are just the beginning. Where the Pacific Ocean meets the Northern California coast, is some of the most gorgeous and rugged scenery in the world. Experience the coastline in many ways - whether driving up and down Highway 1, kayaking the ocean caves, taking an excursion on a fishing or whale watching boat, or lounging on the sand in the sun - appreciating the extraordinary beauty of the coast at Fort Bragg is a must. Hiking the redwood forests in the state parks (there are several) and weaving through the mystical ferns, will make you feel as if you've stepped back in time. Or at least into another world. The majestic redwood is something that must be experienced to understand. We love to introduce people to the area, so if you have questions please ask. If you have suggestions, please record them in the guest book for future visitors.
